'Daredevil' #502
Written by: Andy Diggle

The last issue of ' Daredevil' still leaves me in awe, it was that amazing. If you have not read it yet, then be sure to pick it up when you head to your local comic shop this week. We left the last issue off with the supposed death of Master Izo in a very dramatic scene between he and Matt Murdock. The question on the minds of readers is a moral one, would Matt Murdock really sacrifice the life of an innocent person to gain control of 'The Hand'? Would he take that kind of slanted justice into his own hands just so he can gain control of ' The Hand'? Keep in mind that Izo has managed to avoid death for the last couple hundred years, so who's to say that he is actually dead?

The second moral question is, of course, whether or not Daredevil really believes that an inherently evil organization like 'The Hand' could become good simply by altering the leadership, or whether their influence would alter Daredevil's perception of right and wrong? All of these questions are answered in this issue, which would make it vital for you to pick up if you have been reading the series.

Most impressive, however, is the way that Diggle intertwines Norman Osborn's political influence into the plot. We realize in this book that he really is a force to be reckoned with beyond the muscle of the ' Iron Patriot' suit.

Murdock at the helm of The Hand is an interesting moral dilemma. Does he take the lead, or allow them to look for leadership from someone like Fisk, who he knows will abuse the power? Though it's also arrogant of him to try and create change in a group that ash had this practice for over a hundred years.

It doesn't really seem likely that The Hand could be "turned". It would have to be gradual. They will notice what he's doing and they just have to say he's not worthy of leadership.

I think it will take a talented writer to explain the minutiae of the judicial system and political corruption for a comic books audience. It can be rather dry and confusing. Knowing some of it, that's probably why I enjoyed that movie "Law Abiding Citizen". Though, I think if a person wants to write well for Dare Devil. They need to know about the justice system. Otherwise, I think you do the character a disservice. He is a lawyer, and that part of his life should play a role.
It's sort of a similar issue with Batman being a detective. Not very often in the comics do we see Batman acting as a detective. People focus too much on his fighting. The man is more then just muscle. He has a mind as well. It was nice to show Batman doing detective work in the "Dark Knight" movie. Though, the idea of lifting a print off an expended round is laughable.

I feel that Dark Reign really does play as a sort of political allegory. Civil War showed what happens when you start giving up freedoms for safety. Captain America (i.e. the American Spirit) dies. Secret Invasion showed the consequences of worrying about the secret enemy within. Dark Reign shows what you get when you are too willing to hand over power to someone. I'm quite interested to see what events take place to cause the turn around.

I'm just glad to see a writer who isn't aping Miller. Let's face it the norm for this mag for over 20 years has been for Murdock to have some kind of nervouse breakdown and/or his girlfriend to be imperiled or killed. Don't get me wrong I've been along for the ride and I've always been a huge DD fan. There's shades of the nervous breakdown thing here, with his friends worrying about his motives and state of mind. But there's enough of an original storyline and concept (for this mag anyway) to keep me hooked. Entertwining this with Dark Reign throws up enough possibilities to make me unsure where it's going. Which is a good thing. I'm intrigued to say the least.

Daredevil more than any other street level hero is almost always on the verge of a nervous breakdown because people he associates with or loves always seem to get killed or hurt his villains take a more personal approach at him. It's the reason Spider-Man is usually on that verge as well. His villains take a more personal approach at him.And his loved ones get hurt.He ended up being the cause of his own girlfriends death. That's gotta hurt somewhere.

I think Andy has done an excellant job on the series, i hade put the book down around when Benis had done his take on it. But now i'm really interested in the series again.

I have just started collecting Daredevil again (#500 onwards) and I think it is the best thing Marvel are doing currently, with the exception of Millars Ultimate Avnegers.

I really enjoyed this issue, Diggle is a great storyteller and the art is amazing.
Watch out with the spoilerish rhetorical questions in the video review, I wouldn't have wanted to watch this review before I read Daredevil.
Other than that, great review, agree on the 4,5 out of 5.
