Daniel Craig Saddles Up For Cowboys & Aliens

Another franchise added to his belt?

Cowboys & Aliens is a graphic novel that a lot of people haven't heard of.  It's been out of print but the comic that Fred Van Lente co-wrote had been gaining attention since DreamWorks and Jon Favreau have announced their plans to make a movie out of it.  It seemed like the movie hit a rough patch when Robert Downey Jr decided to drop out of the movie (since he has his hands full with Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes).  A couple weeks ago there was some speculation that Daniel Craig might be stepping into Downey's...boots for the role.

Today the word got out that Daniel Craig has closed his deal to take the lead role, as Zeke Jackson in the Western/Sci-Fi movie.  Zeke has to team up with the local Native Americans when an alien ship full of invaders arrives in the late 1800s.  There has only been one comic but the way it ends leaves the film perfect for a franchise.  This could mean that Craig could have this and James Bond to pay the bills.

I could easily see Robert Downey Jr in the role of Zeke.  I do think Daniel Craig is an amazing actor but I'm not sure how he'll fit in this role.  I'll admit I only recall Craig from the Bond movies, Defiance and The Golden Compass.  It turns out that he was also in the 2001 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie.  If the movie turns out to be in 3-D, as Favreau has mentioned, the combination of a Western movie mixed with invading aliens could make this an interesting movie.

I haven't read the comic, but Daniel Craig is awesome so good stuff. He can hide his accent, as evidenced in the first Tomb Raider movie, so he could fit as a cowboy.

And we know he can shoot a gun as well.  Does anyone know how his horse-riding skillz are?

I was sorry to hear Downey Jr. dropped out of this movie, but he's needed elsewhere. I am far more looking forward to the next Sherlock Holmes movie. I do wonder if they will also use Irene Adler again.

Daniel Craig will probably suit the character of Zeke better anyways. He does have the Clint Eastwood-esque sort of appearance.

I don't know what to think about this film so really i'm not sure if Craig would be good. But then at the same time i have no idea how good Downey Jr. would be for the role. So fingers crossed that this turns out to be a cracker.
