Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman Creative Team for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

This 2013 book promises a darker version of the wall-crawler.

It's a big week and weekend for announcements with New York Comic Con starting today. Many fans know by now that issue 700 of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will be the last issue of the series. What happens next? Well, according to USA Today, starting in January, 2013, your favorite web-head will be back on the shelves of your LCS in the book SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN fans can rejoice as Ryan Stegman (SCARLET SPIDER cover artist) teams up with ASM writer Dan Slott for this new, darker look at Spider-Man. This book will have rotating artists as well. Fans will see the return of Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli to work on this new Spidey-book.

Spidey will have a bit of a redesign as well. Here is character sketch to the right, from the USA Today article.

There will be a few changes to the costumes, as you can see, which includes some new colors on the costume to reflect the new attitude and era of the book, including some black leggings.

Many people are saying the events of issue 700 are going to change the way fans look at the character. As we've seen in more recent issues, Spidey has become a bit more short with his villains. He seems to have lost compassion for those who truly are good inside, like his recent run-in with Morbius in the last Lizard story arc.

Could this be what "Superior" means? Does Spider-Man find himself a superior being to all those around him or does he have new powers that make him superior to his former self? Stegman said in the USA Today interview that he will indeed have some new abilities.

Writer Dan Slott gives us a good idea of what we can expect from this new series.

He's not going to be doing things the old Spider-Man way. There will be a new way of doing things...The first story arc is called 'Hero or menace?' I think that pretty much tells you where we're going.

Looks like we'll all be waiting on the edge of our seats until issue 700 hits the shelves in December, then SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN releases in January.

What do you guys think of the new creative team and costume for this new Spider-Man book?

@Strider92: Pftt, you know what I menat. That child is obviously... a child. No way he grows into a full man in a matter of a few months. I think that was just paying homage to Ultimate Spider-Man.

@Scarlet_Spyder: Peter changing completely would still piss off a lot of fans because that's not what Peter represents.

@Scarlet_Spyder: I don't know. It would be an odd decision to kill off Peter as he's already been killed off in the Ultimate Universe and I doubt this new Spider-Man is the 616 equivalent of Miles Morales as Bendis wrote the Spider-Men arc not Slott, and there hasn't been a single hint towards Miles or any character of that fashion in the current canon. My best guess is that Peter snaps and changes completely or that Ben comes back.

Hate to break it to you but there has T.T. I want to burn this picture soooooo bad!

Check out what the kid's jacket says........

I still read Ultimate Spider-Man with Miles Morales but if they do that with 616 I'm dropping the book.
I'm not jumping to conclusions that is what they are doing though. I still have no idea but if it's something I don't like I'm not spending money on it.
I'll try and keep an open mind though it's not looking good.

Why's everyone hating on Miles Morales? He's obviously not going to become the new 616 Spider-Man and Bendis' work with him has been pretty spectacular as of late.

Actually that page is from a retelling of Spider-man's first fight with Vulture (hence the reason he refers to himself as a high school wiz kid) so Peter was 15-16 back then. He's now in his mid to late twenties. the kid in that pic could well be in his late teens by now.

But i'm still gonna stick with the whole Peter losing his morals thing.

And that it would...and again, I see it as a valid point.

As for the child Morales, I agree, but then again, since when has being a child in one issue, and then a simple retcon been an issue in the past? Then again, that may have been just an homage, and the real Morales could make an appearance. Who knows? It still plants a seed of the idea of there being a Morales in the 616 universe, and could have been that: an effort to plant a seed or a clue or hint of things to come. I would not rule it out.

Maybe he's going to make another deal with Mephisto?^^

First thing first, Peter Parker needs to be Spiderman. In general I am a huge fan of sidekicks growing up and taking the mantle of the main hero (Bucky and Dick for example), and while I do like Scarlet Spider (both Ben and new version of Kaine), I can only see Peter as Spider Man.

I could be ok with a darker spider man if it is done right (the idea of Peter saying goodbye to his identity as Peter, maybe "killing Peter", and being only Spider Man is interesting). If they're gonna kill someone like Aunt May in 700, I really, really hope that we don't get to see an emo spiderman because of it who keeps blaming himself in every issue.

Plus I don't see how MJ would hook up with some random person impersonating Spider Man........... I have been a big fan of Dan Slott's run on ASM so I'll keep faith!

Alright, I have said my piece, and am enjoying the discussion, but I need to go pick my daughter up from school.

I hate to say it, but think worst case scenario here. What is likely to anger fans enough to cause the statements that have been made? An attitude change might...but as long as it is still Peter (and I hope it is), then I don't see the backlash being too terribly bad to call for pitchforks and torches....but I could admittedly be wrong.

Worst case, I feel we will see Peter's death or the loss of his powers, and then Ben makes his return or someone we have not considered steps into his shoes.

It's not Miles himself that's the origin of the hate. It's about him replacing Peter that makes people hate. Miles just the symbol of it. of it. I like Miles in ultimate universe and still read it but it did make me mad they replaced Peter. It was tolerable because we still had 616 though. If they do that in 616 also that's to much.
Posted by Deranged Midget

@Dernman: He's not replacing Peter in current continuity. If it were to happen, they could've easily done it already in Spider-Men as Miles jumped into the 616 Universe.

Last thought...they could just seemingly kill off the Peter identity (basically making it look like Peter dies in 700) allowing him to be a moraless Spider-Man full time. Ah well, now I am late=P

Take it easy guys=)

@Strider92: Just had a thought I was discussing with @Deranged Midget: What if Doc Ock, knowing who Spider-Man is decides to take his greatest act of revenge against Spider-Man by going after Aunt May? She's in New York, she's crippled and Slott even hinted at it when Peter said "the best place for you is here where I can keep an eye on you no matter what happens." Heck Ock went after Jay Jameson in ASM 600 as a subconscious act of jealously. What if he takes it to the extreme?

I was thinking in worst case scenarios and speculations. I'm not really leaning anywhere at this point.

@Lvenger: That is a good point and Slott also posted something about Aunt May and Ocks wedding on his twitter maybe he is hinting at something.

I love Spider-Man, but a $4.99 price cover? Whoa!

Posted by Scarlet_Spyder

I am trying to do this from my cell, so we will see how this turns out. I was just looking at a cover for ASM 700. a ton of Spider-Man's, a ring of Venoms and the eye being scenes, people and events...for one the multiple Spideys could be a clue pointing to a clone...or the ring of Venoms and black suited Spider-Mans could point to the change in Pete going without morals, or I am just overthinking a pretty cool piece of art.

Posted by MadRooster81

@DonFelipe: I could. He is a beloved hero with a strong moral background. If they turn him into a villain, that changes a lot of the character and what he stands for. But I find Slott's comment that it may not even be Peter Parker as Spider-Man to be a bit unsettling.

i hope its still peter... mutated peter w/e i hope its peter

Posted by JoseDRiveraTCR7

Has Peter died before? I believe he has, but I can't remember. I'm just asking because for months Slott has been saying that he's going to do something that has never been done to Spider-Man/Peter.

Posted by Deranged Midget

@JoseDRiveraTCR7: Peter was killed by Morlun.

He's gonna be a vampire and start feeding off the blood of his enemies as a spider would do.

I don't know why, but I got this feeling that this is the 616 miles morleas...but I don't know what to say...

Posted by yteez

No one would dare replace Peter in the 616 universe and that's the way it's supposed to be. If that happened i believe most of the long time fans (myself included) would drop the book immediately in disgust.

I looked at the sketch and I wanna see how they explain the claws on his feet and fingers. Will it be an new invention? And if so why on his fingers? Will spidey lose his ability to stick to walls? Or is it going to be a further mutation and maybe a continuation of the "The Other" story?

Something like that already happened in the 90's.... Was cool but already happened... It was short before the clone saga...

Let me comment to anybody worrying about Peter Parker changing his personality. Through psychology we know that a person's psyche and personality are fluid, and constantly changing. The events we go through constantly mold our new impressions. We all posses the capability of infinite personalities. So when you say someone is "ruining" a character, keep in mind certain events would change anybody for the worse. It's a story of a characters journey. So for a while, sit back don't try to steer the ship, so to speak, and see where the story goes.

@Umbraa: Not sure if that's truly going to apply to Slott's run as the Spider-Men story was written by Bendis and doesn't really have any co-relation to the ASM title. Although, I'm curious as to where it leads.

Wait a minute, people! After doing some extensive research I have come across a mindblowing revelation! This comic book is NOT named Superior Spider-Man!

Its true name is... SUPERIOR SPIDFR-MAN!

No wonder Peter Parker is not in this series! He's clearly not supposed to be this "Spidfr-Man" fellow!

I have a felling Peter is going to kill one of his villians after the villain kills someone close to Spidey and Pete will giving up being Spider-Man and hand himself in. Then some else will become Spider-Man, like Eddie Brock or someone who Peter knowns, I hope none of this happens (though I don't think I'd mind if Peter killed someone for killing someone he loved) as no one can truely replace Peter Parker

I also have a felling Jackal and Kraven will be somehow involved in ASM #700 and that Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly) could return, fingers crossed this happens

Here is a list of people I won't mind becoming Spider-Man (on a temporary basis)

  1. Ben Reilly
  2. Eddie Brock
  3. Harry Osborn
Edited by Wowlock

MJ seems to be in the new series but the way her reaction in the cover.... I sadly have no high hopes for this new rotation.... Please don't make him as the ''Emo''-man we saw from the movies... we have enough depressing characters as it is...Spiderman used to light my face up with his wits and way to handle his villians... now he will be another ''Batman'' ? Not everyone has be Batman...

We know if "Superior" is followed by the story of ASM #700 ??

@DATNIGGA: His character doesn't fit that though. So they wouldn't. They treat Cap like he's the best ever and he's no better than Captain Canuck or Captain Britian. He's just as original and corny. But they don't treat him like one of those even though they should. Spiderman is like 50% of why Marvel makes money. Batman is DC's 50%. Prob more for both of them but I'm being fair.

@thespidey307: from what they have said that we have seen this spiderman before. He will be darker and edgier. I think this will be peter parker but the parker when he was with the symbiote. I like the idea that he sheds and changes but i was thinking it could be like when he changes its like a defense mechanism. A way for him to adapt. The way things have been for spidey this new spidey will be more ruthless as a way for him to better protect himself. It might be far out there. I liked everyone else ideas so I just wanted to have one of my own lol.
