Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman Creative Team for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

This 2013 book promises a darker version of the wall-crawler.

It's a big week and weekend for announcements with New York Comic Con starting today. Many fans know by now that issue 700 of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will be the last issue of the series. What happens next? Well, according to USA Today, starting in January, 2013, your favorite web-head will be back on the shelves of your LCS in the book SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN.

No Caption Provided

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN fans can rejoice as Ryan Stegman (SCARLET SPIDER cover artist) teams up with ASM writer Dan Slott for this new, darker look at Spider-Man. This book will have rotating artists as well. Fans will see the return of Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli to work on this new Spidey-book.

No Caption Provided

Spidey will have a bit of a redesign as well. Here is character sketch to the right, from the USA Today article.

There will be a few changes to the costumes, as you can see, which includes some new colors on the costume to reflect the new attitude and era of the book, including some black leggings.

Many people are saying the events of issue 700 are going to change the way fans look at the character. As we've seen in more recent issues, Spidey has become a bit more short with his villains. He seems to have lost compassion for those who truly are good inside, like his recent run-in with Morbius in the last Lizard story arc.

Could this be what "Superior" means? Does Spider-Man find himself a superior being to all those around him or does he have new powers that make him superior to his former self? Stegman said in the USA Today interview that he will indeed have some new abilities.

Writer Dan Slott gives us a good idea of what we can expect from this new series.

He's not going to be doing things the old Spider-Man way. There will be a new way of doing things...The first story arc is called 'Hero or menace?' I think that pretty much tells you where we're going.

Looks like we'll all be waiting on the edge of our seats until issue 700 hits the shelves in December, then SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN releases in January.

What do you guys think of the new creative team and costume for this new Spider-Man book?

Don't say that!!!!!!!! You'll jinx it!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to go back to pretending its O'Hara or that Spider-man not being Peter Parker is simply a metaphor as to how dark Peter's got so no longer considers himself to be Peter Parker.

this is actually pretty interesting !

i'm hoping for that as well, because if Peter is not spider-man i'm pretty sure this book is doomed from the start

Now that second part is interesting. Maybe Peter crosses the line and becomes something unlike the Peter Parker we know. But then how do you explain the rumour that Spider-Man and MJ will be getting back together (which I know you don't like the sound of)

That's the second title in my future pull list where the titular character is being replaced. First Baz replaces Hal Jordan (I actually really like Baz though) and now this. They'd better not pull this on Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman.

@ZenTzen: Now Slott's done a pretty good job on Spider-Man IMO. I've only not enjoyed one issue of Slott's run. I trust he knows what he's doing with the character. Besides this stunt was pulled on GL recently and it's worked out well.

Well heres the thing:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/10/11/dan-slott-talks-superior-spider-man-at-nycc/

If you read the title it says Spider-man is getting back together with Mary Jane but Peter Parker isn't Spider-man. As much as I loath the idea of them getting back together Spider-man going back to MJ it can't really be taken a whole lot of ways. Peter Parker not being Spider-man might simply be a metaphor to throw us off by saying something like "Spider-man is in a bad such a bad place right now he doesn't consider himself to be Peter Parker the guy who believes in Power and responsibility" so while it might be Peter physically, mentally it might be a completely different cold type of person. It happened back in the 90's when he said Peter Parker was dead and only the Spider was left.

But honestly they said Spider-man is getting back with MJ but Pete isn't Spider-man. There aren't many ways to take this short of MJ hooking up with Kaine (LOL) which won't happen. So I think the whole Peter Parker not being Spider-man thing might be just a play on words.

sounds legit since slott does like to tease people, hope it's true, i just don't seem to imagine kaine instead of peter with Mj

Exactly. It says Spider-man gets back with MJ so who else is it going to be? Its got to be Peter just a dark cold version who doesn't consider himself to be Peter Parker. I am now going to go find my torch ready to hunt Slott for making OMD even more pointless and annoying than it already was. Although I will wait for January before I begin the hunt lol!

I just have a hard time imagining all of this development and growth with Peter as a character, just to have it all undone and scrapping Peter as Spider-Man. Then again...OMD...geez...I just don't know what to think.

Oh i'm not dissing Slott's writing. He's one of my favorite Spider-man writers but OMD was aweful and was made with the ONLY purpose of making Spider-man single. If you re-introduce him and MJ as a couple you have effectively rubbed salt in a open wound as the whole thing becomes even worse as not only would OMD be an awful story but also a pointless one!

Is it really official?... Its not Peter??

Well... that means ... after 20 year I'm of the Spider-man train.... because that's the last drop this bucket can hold....

I was already not really convinced with the artist choice.... I wasn't even all that impressed in what Dan Slott did 'till now...

Maybe Ill try a TPB in the future if it turns out its good.... but Marvel just lost me in the whole reason I was in comics .... Spider-man

Hopefully it will be temporarily... because in my book there is only one Spider-man.... (Only Miles Morales in the Ultimate universe I tolerate.. But in the regular series it has to be Peter )

Let the future tell us......

It's just rumours and speculation at the moment. And given how Slott's built up Peter's character in his run, it would be strange for him to introduce a new character.

I'd love to see Ben again but one of the reasons I liked him so much was that he was an even happier/cocky Spider-man than Pete so going by what we've been told it doesn't fit his character. Until I get conformation i'm going to stick with Peter Parker not being Spider-man as a play on words:

@Strider92: Indeed, I spoke to Lvenger regarding the fact that all of this ties into Madame Web and the "Web of Life" nonsense or whatever it was. Something drastic is going to happen in Peter's life that might force him to break his moral code, and changes him for the worse possibly in a similar fashion that Grim Hunt played out.

It depends on how it plays out. I think many felt that Bucky as Cap wouldn't work, but I feel he was fairly well accepted as Cap...it didn't last obviously. So unless this is incredibly well done and it isn't a play on words...ugh, I just don't know.

And if it is truly not Peter...then I only see one of two things happening to Peter that would cause a huge outrage -- Peter dies or loses his powers. I don't see the death of a loved one causing him to stop being Spidey -- that card has been played and is overdone. Peter has had loss and has dealt with it a few times. I guess we will see soon enough.

Indeed you did. This darker change would fit with the vision Julia had of Spider-Man going rogue. What I love about that future image is that it's Wolverine who's showing the most disdain for Spider-Man's actions. I find that incredibly hypocritical given how many people Wolverine must have killed compared to... how many people has Spider-Man actually killed? Morlun's one but I can't think of any others. And Madame Web does see the future via the Web of Life. Corny I know.

That's a fair speculation. Perhaps once Peter becomes blood-lusted or angry, that's what triggers the extent of his powers and allows him to become more efficient and powerful in that regard. My best speculation, especially after #694, is that Aunt May is going to be killed by Ock or one of Peter's villains.

True, but look at this way: He loses his powers, then there is a chance to bring him back if the new Spider-Man fails -- if it is indeed not Peter. They could bring him back from the dead...but that card is overplayed as well and has happened far too often recently.

We get a new Spidey, very loosely moraled, and starts to grow darker and darker. He sticks around for a bit, but of course it paves the way for Peter's return to eventually come back to take back the mantle. Now, it is basically a rip on a certain Batman story, but I can see it happening. I don't see a Spider-Man that is not Peter lasting in 616 continuity unless they do something utterly mind-blowing with it...even then, I still don't see it lasting. Peter Parker will forever be Spider-Man in just about everyone's eyes.

@Scarlet_Spyder: I don't know. It would be an odd decision to kill off Peter as he's already been killed off in the Ultimate Universe and I doubt this new Spider-Man is the 616 equivalent of Miles Morales as Bendis wrote the Spider-Men arc not Slott, and there hasn't been a single hint towards Miles or any character of that fashion in the current canon. My best guess is that Peter snaps and changes completely or that Ben comes back.

Hate to break it to you but there has T.T. I want to burn this picture soooooo bad!

Check out what the kid's jacket says........

It would be an odd decision, but I am thinking of worst case scenario here. What is truly going to anger fans? I doubt killing Aunt May would have people going after him with torches and pitchforks. It would be sad yes, a turning point yes, but I don't see fans utterly losing it over her death. Peter losing his powers or his death? Yup, i can see it. We have seen the backlash over the hint that the Peter we have grown up with was actually a clone...I think only his death or loss of powers is apt to bring about such a backlash that Slott would mention going into hiding.

As well, what about the ending of the recent Miles and Peter crossover? There are enough hints and precedent for it I hate to say...
