Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman Creative Team for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

This 2013 book promises a darker version of the wall-crawler.

It's a big week and weekend for announcements with New York Comic Con starting today. Many fans know by now that issue 700 of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will be the last issue of the series. What happens next? Well, according to USA Today, starting in January, 2013, your favorite web-head will be back on the shelves of your LCS in the book SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN fans can rejoice as Ryan Stegman (SCARLET SPIDER cover artist) teams up with ASM writer Dan Slott for this new, darker look at Spider-Man. This book will have rotating artists as well. Fans will see the return of Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli to work on this new Spidey-book.

Spidey will have a bit of a redesign as well. Here is character sketch to the right, from the USA Today article.

There will be a few changes to the costumes, as you can see, which includes some new colors on the costume to reflect the new attitude and era of the book, including some black leggings.

Many people are saying the events of issue 700 are going to change the way fans look at the character. As we've seen in more recent issues, Spidey has become a bit more short with his villains. He seems to have lost compassion for those who truly are good inside, like his recent run-in with Morbius in the last Lizard story arc.

Could this be what "Superior" means? Does Spider-Man find himself a superior being to all those around him or does he have new powers that make him superior to his former self? Stegman said in the USA Today interview that he will indeed have some new abilities.

Writer Dan Slott gives us a good idea of what we can expect from this new series.

He's not going to be doing things the old Spider-Man way. There will be a new way of doing things...The first story arc is called 'Hero or menace?' I think that pretty much tells you where we're going.

Looks like we'll all be waiting on the edge of our seats until issue 700 hits the shelves in December, then SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN releases in January.

What do you guys think of the new creative team and costume for this new Spider-Man book?

This is my most anticipated Marvel Now series!! Glad to hear that Dan Slott is still on the series for Spider-man!

I like Slott's Spidey, so I'm sure this will be good. Plus Stegman's art, hhnngg!

So in other words...superior means douchey? Wow, I may actually give this a try then! I'm deadly serious here...

As long as he keeps making jokes even if its a lot less jokes I'm more than ok with the change cept. The team didnt really change. I thought it was suppose to be r'evolution

I bet one chimichanga that Peter´s "other" powers are coming back except the organic webshooters cause they´re atrophied since he battled Iron Man in the One More Day arc you know hi just pushed them to far when he did that. But as you know the whole concept of those powers mysticaly speaking was evolving so it´s not out of the picture his "other" powers will reappear. And if you don´t believe me just see issue 693 he mentions he had organic webshooters in a panel. And in one of the last issues of Spider Island he mentions to Kaine he knows the feeling of coming back to life with strange powers.

First off, WHY A RELAUNCH?

Second, WHY THE NEW COSTUME?!

Third, WHY DARKER? HAVEN'T WE ESTABLISHED BY THIS POINT SPIDEY ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE BATMAN?!

Posted by MadRooster81

I'm thinking that Slott might be turning Spider-Man into a villain. Whatever it is, the wait is killing me!

Posted by DonFelipe

I'm not a big Marvel nor Spider-Man fan but calling it "The Superior Spider-Man" doesn't sound right. It doesn't even sound as cool as "The Amazing...". Who made that decision at Marvel? Besides, it's going to be very difficult to rename this series to "Amazing" again after 299 issues. Well, very unlikely it will survive 299 superior issues in the first place.

The cover is great though.

That would be awesome but is it really an options? Wouldn't it offend the fan base?

Yeah, we have, but looks like someone at Marvel didn't get the memo, sorry to say. If i want to read Dark Spider-Man, I'll read any back issue with Eddie Brock, before they ruined him with the Anti Venom stuff

I'm willing to wait and see where the claws part goes. I imagine he will get mutated a little farther down the spider side. Somewhere between what he normally is but a tiny bit closer to Man-spider.

The only thing I don't really like are the non-emoting lens eyes. I always liked being able to read Pete's emotions with the big white circles. I think it could hold the art back just a bit.

Seems legit. I most certainly will pick this up..

I just hope there isn't a whole lot of dastric changes to his personality. His sense of humor is a big plus for a hero like him.

Not liking what I'm seeing.

C'mon guys this has to be Miles Morales. First of all he is wearing a black and red costume like Miles. Second of all the said a "DARKER" version of the wall crawler. Third, in the Spider-men finale, 616 Peter Parker looks up Miles Morales name on the computer and they allude to him finding some very surprising results. Marvel never said that the Superior Spider-man was going to be the only Marvel Now! Spider-man book. Just saying. They could still relaunch Amazing Spider-man and have Dan Slott writing both books. They couldn't use the Ultimate adjective because it is already taken so maybe they replaced it with Superior. If this is Miles it would be so awesome.

I must admit, that new costume looks awesome. I'll have to read about this later, I hope its still Peter and not another guy.

For me, Dan Slott writes one of the best Peter Parkers ever (and that includes Peter as Spider-Man). So like Christopher Nolan, when news about what Slott is up to comes out I will hold my judgement and wait to read it myself. Because its probably going to be good. Plus I LOVE Spider-Man. My favorite character.

'Retractable Claw' on his toe??? Really...? Already had problems with just the toe.....

The lenses in his eyes doesn't make sense... He going to see things cross eyed and double.....

Darkening the series I don't have problems with... I kinda like that....Back in the day when Chameleon and The Green Goblin messed with his head with his cloned parents I loved that dark Spider and the intern battle between the human persona and the spider persona.... So what's going to trigger it this time... Last time it was the death of his parents and finding out they were fabricated Battle machines.... maybe MJ death... or Carlie's death.... or Jay Jameson and Aunt May's death....

But if it going to be someone else than Peter Parker.... I'll just quit the series....

The art Though.... Not a big Stegman fan so... mwah...It looks so bulky, stiff and rushed to me . With Ramos I like the page designs and the background (Ow his backgrounds soooo good... ). But I don't like the whole toon over proportions in the figures. I like the work Camuncoli... Fits better in my eyes...

I'm stopping the loose issues after #700 (Been collecting loose Spider-man issues since 1993...so that's not a good sign) and I'll await the first TPB. (Except if it is someone else behind the mask than I'll plain ol' quit and .... ditch that stupid toe thingie... 'Retractable claw'... shhheezz)

i dont think this is peter as spider-man. i think its someone else. just look at the pics. in the cover his finger thingies are really embeded in the surface damaging it. spider-man never did that.

I'm reserving judgment until I see whose doing the variant covers. Very important. :)

It's either not Peter Parker or a mutated Peter Parker.

@k4tzm4n: I was told that Scarlet Spider would continue in Marvel Now, but if we have a Spider-Man with laxed morals, that kinda makes Kaine redundant. I personally love darker Spider-Man stories such as Back in Black and Grim Hunt but Scarlet Spider has actually been pretty awesome and seeing it stop would be saddening. What is even more troubling is that their seems to be whispers that Spider-man actually won't be Peter Parker in Superior Spider-Man. Slott has been a very good for Spider-man, but if this is true, then he may be biting off a bit more than even he can chew.

Edited by Strider92

@laflux: I had this discussion with Deranged Midget and i've come to the conclusion that it is peter in the suit. Slott has worked far to hard in changing Spider-man. Giving him, new tech, Spider-fu, changing his personality etc... If Slott was going to kill Peter why build him up that much? Why change his personality? Not to mention that there are things like Spider-Fu we've only seen one or two demonstrations of. It would be terribly wasteful to kill Peter now that he has so much potential to evolve with his new skills. Not to mention Peter Parker already died in the Ultimate Universe I highly doubt Slott would want to copy that as it would definitely detract from the whole "700 being the most shocking Marvel comic".

Did anyone else notice the claws that they added to his fingers and the one on his big toe?

Posted by MrArrogant

I am a little annoyed at the whole "dark spidey" direction, as I'm really now a fan of dark super-heroes (especially spider-man as a dark hero) but then I remember that:

Slott + Stegman =

so I'm sticking with the book. Slott has had the best run on the character in a long time so I'm really excited to see where he goes next.

According to Bleeding Cool it's not Peter. Slott supposedly announced it earlier today(10/11)

I'm a little confused with there word choice. They said Spider-man will get back together with Mary Jane but Peter Parker will not be Spider-man. Notice how they didn't say Peter will get back with MJ. Soooooooo does that mean some new Spider-man guy will get with MJ?????

So basically Slott is gonna hook up MJ with another Spider-man guy that's not Peter what kind of BS is that!!!!

Aww thats disappointing.... especially the MJ part......

I said it might be Miguel O'Hara as a joke but it seems it could be likely:

http://comicbook.com/blog/2012/10/10/the-superior-spider-man-seemingly-confirmed-as-not-peter-parker/

Retractable claws? Laxed Morals? Smarter than Peter? And he has experience as a Hero? It could well be O'Hara.

I guess it is possible...but I just don't see Spidey fans reacting well at all to Peter Parker not being Spider-Man (myself included)...I am willing to give it a chance, but I feel like there is going to be a ton of fan backlash like during a certain clone storyline...I'll go ahead and state now that I don't foresee a new Spider-Man lasting very long unless they do something utterly mind-blowing with this new series...even then I would guess that we will see Peter make a come back at some point.

I think Marvel might be trying to drive me to buy DC comics...ugh...we'll see how this new book goes...

So what do you guys think, back to Amazing Spider-Man starring Peter Parker in about a year? Picking up with issue #713?

I heard he was joking when he said it wasn't Peter under the costume, but I could be wrong. Either way, I haven't been the biggest fan of Slott's run, literally skipping every other arc, and this may be the jumping off point for me. I always have my Spider-Man omnibus I suppose.

I hope this is true.

For it to not be Peter, we would be looking at either the death of Peter, or he would have to lose his powers.

Edited by Strider92

I actually think it may be O'Hara despite my joking. If we look at what we've been given:

  • Not Peter Parker in the suit
  • Retractable Claws
  • Laxed Morals
  • Experience Being a Hero
  • Smarter than Peter
  • Something Wrong with his eyes

We all know Miguel has claws:

We know Miguel has very laxed Morals he's killed numerous villains. He killed his universes Vulture. He also has experience using his abilities which also fits what has been stated. Miguel is also a geneticist and although he hasn't got a ton of feats he is incredibly intelligent and uses this on a daily basis so I guess it isn't a push to say he might be smarter than Parker.

And last but not least:

Dan Slott: We’ve already got a cover out by Humberto that really highlights some of the new changes to the costume and the new look for this Spider-Man. Since the days of the Joe Quesada teaser for Marvel NOW!, we really haven’t seen that much of Spidey because he’s doubled over. All you can really tell is something’s wrong with his eyes; something was weird with the eyes— what’s going on? But we’ll see more as the days get closer.

For those of you who didn't follow 2099 Miguel has enhanced vision and senses as a result of this his eyes are srsly screwed up (as you can see above and in this picture):

He has to wear sunglasses to stop his eyes being hurt by the sunlight as they are very sensitive. What if those new weird lenses the Superior Spider-man has are to stop the sun hurting Miguel's eyes? I admit this is a longshot but the pieces do sort of fit.

@Strider92: It is a longshot but it's an appealing, possible longshot like a lot of your posts on this matter have been. Will you be picking this up? I guess you will from your AV. And looks like there are no Ock arms though eh?

I'm going to give it a shot yeah :) and thank god for no Ock arms lol! Yep its a longshot but SM 2099 has been in quite a few games recently and has a fan base a result so it could happen. Its unlikely but it could!
