CW Creating Hourman TV Show

DC's television takeover continues!

DC is making a heavy push into the world of television and now they're adding yet another character to the CW: Hourman. According to TV Guide, Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz will serve as executive producers through Lin Pictures, a production company with Warner Bros. TV. Additionally, Michael Caleo is tackling the script.

No Caption Provided

Hourman centers on a "brilliant yet troubled" pharmaceutical analyst who discovers that he can see glimpses of tragic events about to occur one hour into the future. "Determined to win back his ex-wife and son, he heroically prevents these tragedies from unfolding, finding both purpose and redemption along the way," the network says.

This comes after news of CW also looking to add a show about the Flash (which will stem from Arrow) and DC is planning on creating a show about James Gordon over at Fox.

So, who is Hourman? Check out Comic Vine's page for the character to learn all about him! Viners, is this a show you're excited for or would you rather see them bring someone else to your TV?

I think that taking over the small screen is a much better strategy than playing catch-up to Marvel by rushing movies. Save the more well-known characters for their own movies, yet further expand the universe via television with Arrow, the upcoming Flash series, Gotham, the Constantine series, Amazon, and now this. If a new episode of each show comes on each day of the week, DC is going to own my television life.

I think this could work. @jayso4201 Flash is going to be in a few episodes this season and then they'll decide if the show is a go, I think.

@jayso4201 said:

I approve. Love the JSA, wonder which one its going to be though? Is the Flash really happening?

They've having a backdoor pilot for The Flash late in this season of Arrow. Depending on how people like that episode and stuff will determine whether Flash actually happens or not. But I think that if its done right, there won't be a problem getting his own show. :)

Sounds good, I'm not gonna get my hopes too high though. I grabbed a copy of the WW pilot they had it was terrible. I think if they used Jay it would be more marketable. We all remember the suit from the 90's Flash show. Just an idea though.

I find it frustrating that WB own HBO, and won't commit to an HBO show with a DC property.

Imagine a proper Batman or Wonder Woman or Superman show done on HBO.

they aren't going to a TV with those properties because they can make more money on them putting them in movies. its that simple.

TV shows are going to be restricted to "B-List characters" in most cases.

Even smallville was more like "Superboy" than Superman. and Flash has several incarnations of them if they still want to put him a movie. But other than the, the rest are smaller dudes.

You probs wont want to listen to me, but I had the same experience with arrow, left it after 8 episodes because I got sick of workout scenes and general family drama aspects, not to mention a questionable characterization of Ollie, with the only glimmer of hope being able to see interesting takes on the characters I know. Anyways since its on netflix I gave it a second try becasue all my friends are watching it and after about the 12th episode it actually really picked up, it eased off the abs montages, produced more interesting villains and most importantly the parts on the island actually became more interesting. While there are certainly still problems with the show I am willing to forgive them more and it is really pulling together as a show.

@comradecold: I've been considering trying to get back into it because I've heard from a lot of people that season 2 is a lot better. I find the CWs programming in general to be sub-par though. They generally interject their shows with highschool-like drama, hire actors based entirely on looks, and overuse special effects, and resolve plot tension in the most cliched ways possible. Plus they can't air anything that doesn't have a significant sex-appeal to it, which I understand is what the majority of TV watchers want, but I like to keep my porn and plots separate, because they usually do not mix well.

Yeah, what's up with not using the character as in the comics (taking a pill so he can be super for one hour - - thus the name "Hourman")? Hmmm . . . .

hourman is a great character with a very long history ,an interesting concept that any non comic fan can also get into, he also has been addicted to the hourman drug in some past story lines .., he's also a legacy character who's son takes over the hourman name, he is also granted superhuman strength agility and endurance for one hour with the drug . he also owns a pharmaceutical company (Tyler pharmaceuticals) in the comic so he has vast resources , the hourman drug is also what bane used to create vemon (pre-52),,,,the cover image with bane fighting hourman used in this article is that story line (pre-52) ..the charecter has not appeared in the new 52 so his re-imagining is very flexible ...this might work out for cw and dc ...i could very much see this in the same continuity as arrow

@lcazt1996: I agree, honestly if Marvel AOS is any indication of what Marvel has to offer on TV, DC should have no problem remaining on top with TV department no doubt.

I think hourman is a great idea, I look forward to it. Flash too, but I expect a different Flash then the 90's version. Gotham I'm on the fence about still though. And the Constantine show sounds interesting.

Not feeling the Hourman TV Show idea. I watch Smallville and now I am watching the Arrow and I love it. I just feel they could come up with a better idea. Why don't they do a tv show based on Black Lightning or even Constantine. Those two would make a better TV show than Hourman in my opinion.

Black Lightning would be cool. Static makes a lot of sense on a show geared towards young girls... I'm surprised more minority heroes are not popping up actually.

Heck, why not Vixen and the Red fighting the Rot or the Question or Vibe?

They're doing or supposed to do Constantine ;)

Really? Huh. Not that I mind Hourman, but he seems pretty obscure for the general audience. If you're gonna go that far off the big names I'd rather they embrace some of the MIlestone characters. They were pushing Static and Rocket already in the cartoons, I think Hardware would fit the Arrow format pretty well.

That's a weird character choice for a TV show, but whatever. I love the JSA and DC sure as hell doesn't seem to care about the orginal superhero team (because a 5 year timeline is better than 75 years of superhero history)

i recall there was talk of a deadman tv show. thankfully that didnt go well. also in the article about hourman it looks like constatine is getting a tv show also

Hourman, especially as a concept, is brilliant. I love this idea of having superpowers whilst being limited to a specific time period, and battling both super villains and the risk of developing a drug addiction. There's something about the character that need more recognition... but I don't know if this show will do him any justice.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I just can't understand the appeal of almost all of the popular American TV shows. Granted, I may not have seen that many... but the direction they'll probably take this character in isn't one that I want to see. Part of the reason why I love characters like Hourman is the WWII/noir setting of the original JSA, and I don't think that the TV execs will think the same thing...

I was hoping this show would be about Rex but seeing as this Hourman is fighting to get back his ex-wife and kid, it seems to be about his father, with Rex as the kid. Merrrr.

But I'll still watch regardless as I am a loyal Hourman fan.

? It kind of really pissed me off that you automatically brought gender into this. As though I'm somehow saying "Yep Wonder Woman doesn't deserve a series because she's a girl."

I would love to see Wonder Woman having any of those things (I don't think all three would be a good idea, especially a live-action show and a movie in the same timeframe portrayed by two different actresses).

Don't automatically assume things.

@vaeternus: I agree.

Sweet! Happy to see Hourman is getting some spot light. I never read him because I can never find his comics, but I wonder how they are going to do it. If it is Rex Tyler they could make it into a cool WWII era Justice Society. If it's Matt then they can bring the legacy aspect to DC's TV/Movie universe. So excited and surprised. I never expected Hourman to ever make it on TV except for a cameo on a cartoon.

Very happy to see DC moving fast on the TV shows. With Marvel beating them in movies it's a very smart move. I've always been interested in Hourman but never really read any of his stories. I'd be up for watching an Hourman TV show though. Hopefully it's connected to Flash and Arrow. Now if only they'd bring in the Question!!!

They could easily do the Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood story on Arrow, only replace Batman by Green Arrow.They already have a good setup thanks to the three episodes in season 1 with Huntress.

Umm not exactly sure about this?? Why DC/WB don't put their superheroes on HBO or Starz, make them adult and mature is beyond me. I mean they basically destroyed Green Arrow by putting him twice on the CW and becoming either a pretty boy or a Nolan wannabe, and he deserves so much better. And even Houman deserves a story which is existential crisis (I mean come on he only has power for an hour. There's whole debate right there). I also really hope The Flash show doesn't happen (as much as I like Grant Gustin), the Flash is big screen potential!! Come on WB/DC treat your characters not money-making properties!!

Smallville is a fine example.

I've always wanted to see a show on HBO about Bruce Wayne training overseas...Batman need not appear.

The issue with having A-list characters appear on TV at the same time as in movies is...well, Marvel is doing the whole TV/Cinematic Universes be one-and-the-same-thing, so it would be a bad marketing move on DC's end if they decided to have a Superman live-action TV show starring one actor, then having the movies starring Cavil or some other actor.

But if you have, say, Arrow tie-in with Man of Steel (or vice versa) even with something as simple as a newspaper headline mentioning the other one or something along those lines. Just something to acknowledge the other ones existence... well, it gives this feeling that Arrow is just as important to the average viewer. If someone watches Man of Steel loves it and then sees Arrow and is like "Meh. Whatever I don't feel the need to watch this show because it has nothing to do with the movies." then they've lost viewers. But if DC tied them together, the casual viewer might find it more important to watch Arrow. And the same rules apply if you reversed it.

The character sounds like it would be a pitch for a tv show so Im sure it can work Ive just never heard of the character.

@smart_dork_dude:

Not a bad idea. Kinda fits the Arrow/The Hood theme in a way.
