Creator Changes in the GREEN LANTERN Comics [Update]

Josh Fialkov leaves two titles and find out who is replacing him.

Today's been a crazy day in several ways. Earlier we heard about the upcoming creative changes in ACTION COMICS. By now you've probably also heard the news about Joshua Hale Fialkov.

No Caption Provided

Word got out on the internet that Fialkov was also leaving GREEN LANTERN CORPS and RED LANTERNS. As we waited for an official statement, Fialkov finally posted on his own website:

Hey guys,
Just a quick note to confirm what everyone knows, I am no longer the writer of GLC and Red Lanterns for DC Comics. There were editorial decisions about the direction of the book that conflicted with the story I was hired to tell, and I felt that it was better to let DC tell their story the way they want. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’ll miss working with the entire Green Lantern team.

This was not an easy decision to make emotionally or financially, but, I’m sure it was the right decision for both me, and for the Green Lantern books. The outpouring of support, your kind words and well wishes means so much to me and my family.

In the meantime, I’ll be writing ALPHA: BIG TIME and THE ULTIMATES over at Marvel, and THE DEVILLERS at Dynamite. I’ve got a couple more projects in the works, so stay tuned.

Thanks again,
j.

Who will replace him on these two titles? CBR posted that Van Jensen (PINOCCHIO VAMPIRE SLAYER) will take over GREEN LANTERN CORPS, with Robert Venditti co-plotting. Charles Soule (SWAMP THING) will take on RED LANTERNS.

I can't imagine to say how upset I am. I'm more upset that I don't understand. It is like someone promises me a puppy and they let me meet the puppy, but now they're taking it away because someone else gave them the impression that they know someone else could be a better puppy owner.

I want more answers. WHY?! WHERE IS MY PUPPY?!

I'm not saying that happened in that way, but that is how I feel from my perception.

I was going to give those to titles a chance, DC needs to let writers have more freedom, not for DC to tell them what to write.

the biggest problem of this is not only that DC is losing an excellent Young writer, but this incident is tarnishing what was suppose to be the "NEW ERA" for Green Lantern and the same happens for Superman with Andy Diggle

just exactly how much freedom are they giving to the writers that are suppose to be writing the books and im talking about Venditti and Jordan

and now Van Jensen and Soule, I see this guys and I see nothing but typewriters for the editors not the creative minds who are going to bring a new energy to the GL Universe

@G-Man: Don't worry Tony, the rest of us know how hard you guys work. I'm not on this site for immediate dispersal of news (that's what Twitter is for). I am honored to be a part of this site for the amazing, hard working, kind, and non-jaded staff that love comics just as much as I do. You guys deliver a load of content weekly and you (unlike so many others) let your personalities shine through. That style of producing content makes me feel like you and the rest of the staff are friends of mine that I've known for years even though I've never met a single staff member. That's the mark of people that do great work! Us Viners don't say this often enough but, thank you Tony:)

@Nightwing_Beyond: Thanks. But the other thing was I was waiting for an official statement. Yes I saw the news on Bleeding Cool as many others did. I was hoping DC would issue a statement as they did about Tony Daniel taking over the writing for the arc. We're not ones to run with rumors. Yes there is a benefit in doing so as when the rumor is true, you report on it right away. I'm just not one to speculate on things without facts or an official statement from the creators or publishers.

This is so disheartening. Just from hearing the podcast with him a few weeks back it's easy to tell that Joshua was so excited to be on these books.

I don't blame the writers for quiting one bit. Seems like DC just treats their writers like shit unless they're a select few. Everyone of these writers quiting has been about doing what they wanted. It's almost like DC came in and said. "We want you to write a story about this and only this." These are not small titles either. Oh well. Marvel has been spitting out great titles, I'm sure Disney has enough money for them to come on over. Fialkov was already there. If he does okay he'll get even more work. He has the time to do it. In the end this only hurts the reader.

Wow. DC...can you let people tell their stories? Please? I wasn't going to read this, but I know a lot of people like this guy (I've like what little I've read). Also, didn't JHF specifically say in his stint on The Incredibly Super Massive Podcast of Stuff recently that he was happy he would be able to go off into his own little corner of the universe?

@arnoldoaad: Which is why I did post this now. Make sense? On my way to the ferry, I saw Fialkov's post. Then I saw the news of the replacements. I would've just gone with Fialkov's statement but I was unable to post. I just don't understand why it's a problem when I've seen other sites post news over 24 hours after it 'breaks.'

@GammaGirl: I was going to throw Snyder's name in with Johns too. He started Night of Owls and Death of a Family and the rest of the Bat family writers had to go along and write their parts of those stories as well.

@G-Man: I completely agree with your course of action. Comicvine's professionalism in verification and confirmation is an attribute that is scarce in the world of modern journalism. By the way, I got to the spoiler part of the Higgins podcast the second Nightwing came out on the DC app at 12:06am. The timing was perfect. Got to read the comic then listen to Kyle's commentary about the issue right after since you delayed the spoilers. Great call!

DC was probably just going to use him, while editorial ghost writes their BS stories. I was going to pick those titles up BECAUSE of Fialkov. Whatever, Josh has my support over at Marvel. Interested in his Ultimates run and currently his stellar Alpha story. Can't wait to hear about his upcoming work.

THE DEVILLERS! Just because of the title and Fialkov's involvement, I'm intrigued. Really like to know more about this title. On a side note, I don't care much about who's writing and illustrating any Lantern title but it's weird what's going on at DC Comics every now and then.

I was looking forward to reading his take on Green Lantern Corps and Red lanterns. This sucks! I heard his podcast and saw the solicits and man I was looking forward to it. This sucks as much as Andy Diggle leaving Action Comics. Oh wait that happen today too. Man this day sucks. What the hell is going on at DC Comics? Couldn't Joshua do his story? His pitch sounded great. Red Lanterns is a hit or miss for me depending on the issue but his take might have changed that for the better. Now will never know.

They confirmed it AFTER they ran it. What Tony is saying is he would rather wait for it to be official in some capacity than run something because everyone else did, and then retract it later. Its called Journalistic Integrity. If CV posted every bit of rumor as soon as they heard about it, they would have to constantly redact their statements, which in turn would lead to us readers taking everything reported with a grain of salt.

hows abouts you guys let the teacher turned editor of a very successful website do his thing without the amateur critiques? There's a reason Tony gets the sensitive mail stuffs from the big names and you dont.

...as for the actual story: Its seeming like DC isnt really interested in what the fans want anymore on the creative end. Since the N52 started, there have been all kinds of weird debacles with Gail and Liefeld and whoever else. They keep making these creative decisions that make NO SENSE, and it seems like its simply because they like having a certain few fellas in the "boys club" fat and happy with work. We are lucks (so far) that guys like Johns and Snyder are amoung the blessed, but politely screwing over every writer who isnt in the club is gonna bite them in the @$$ down the line...

This seems to be a running trend with DC now? Obviously the writers aren't happy with the editors in charge.  When John Rozum talked about why he quit Static Shock, it sounded like DC wasn't being fair to him but we only heard from his point of view so maybe it was a misunderstanding or something. But now....two writers, dropping out of books because they didn't like the direction editors were telling them to go.....yeeeeeah somethings screwy up at the DC offices.

In my opinion, it seems like the editors are overstepping their boundaries. A writer should be given free-reign to write whatever they want so long as it doesn't cause controversy or change something so drastically that the character is butchered. The editor should enforce those two things. Nothing more, nothing less.

If a writer says "I want a 6 page sex scene between Batman and his new female Robin" the editor should obviously say no. Cause that might rock the boat a little too much and make Batman look like a pedophile or something.  If a writer says "I want to take away Wolverine's claws and give him guns instead" then an editor should say no. Cause then you're taking away an identifiable (If not thee most identifiable) trait of that character and you're just ticking off the fans. That's all the editor should do, act as gatekeeper. They shouldn't be telling writers what to write because they want to boost sales, that's just not fair to the writers. Let them do their job, and if the book fails fire them and try someone else.

DC seems to be motivated entirely by sales, that's why editors are stepping in forcing writers to write what they want and that's why the lowest selling DC series are cancelled and replaced with more Batman books or whatever is selling at the time.

I'm really trying to like DC but so far the only series I'm buying from them are Batman, Constantine, and Talon. At least Marvel seems to be giving their writers some kind of freedom or flexibility. I have yet to hear from a writer saying he hates working on a Marvel NOW title.

This has definitely not been DC's finest day in my opinion. First Diggle now Fialkov...well DC do you have any other terrible ways to ruin things for us? Seriously...it seems like its "editors/big shots vs. the writers" going on at the offices now. I don't know how long I can keep up being a DC fan if this continues...seriously.

This is disheartening. I grow ever more disillusioned with my once favorite DC. Please let writers be writers! Editors seem to be overstepping. It's one thing to steer a licensed property and another altogether to say to a creative talent "here's point a and here's point b. Fill in the gap but go where we to tell you to."

Let me get this straight. DC reboots to develop a more modern take and appeal to a newer audience and now their editors are pissed about how some of the stories are going. Be careful what you ask for.

I couldn't possibly know the details behind this departure, but it seems like a real integrity move on Fialkov's part. It sounds like DC was making overbearing editorial mandates that he didn't agree with, and instead of be a hired gun for a bad story, like other writers I can think of, he decided to step down, which I can't imagine will do him any favors working with DC in the future. At least there's always his Ultimates book. Whatever wackiness that is going on over at DC needs to stop, there's a new negative press story every week and they are bleeding out writers at a massive rate. It's become an embarrassment.

I have been completely onboard for the New 52, but if this trend keeps up, and every book not by Lemire or Johns is written by pencillers, well, I may just have to jump ship.

I for one value your professional attitude toward sources and is the main reason ComicVine is my source for comic news. I know that once something is published on CV, it's been verified.

On-topic: My guess is that Green Lantern and Superman are going to be major participants in the upcoming Trinity War event, and DC wanted Fialkov and Diggle to change their proposed stories so that they fit into Trinity War's arc.

@Smurfboy: Depends on their contract, freelancer can work with multiple companies. If they signed exclusive contract with , let's say DC, they can only work with DC.
