Cowboys & Aliens Filming In July In 3-D With Jon Favreau

The long talked about movie is finally getting into the saddle.

Back in September we heard that Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr's next movie together wouldn't be Iron Man or The Avengers.  Their next movie won't be Marvel related but it will be based on a comic book.  Cowboys & Aliens from Platinum Studios is finally headed to the big screen.

The movie has been on DreamWorks mind for some time.  Robert Downey Jr has even been attached to the movie since the Summer of 2008.  Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (both are set to produce) have been working on the script with Damon Lindelof (Lost, Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk).  Jon Favreau has decided he wanted to direct this after Iron Man 2.  The plan is for a 2011 release.

The latest word is shooting will begin in July.  Yesterday I brought up Favreau's views on 3-D technology and how he thought about doing Iron Man 2 in 3-D after seeing the early stages of James Cameron's Avatar.  Favreau will get his chance to play in 3-D as The Daily Beast has mentioned that DreamWorks is strongly considering doing the Western meets Sci-Fi in three-dimensions.

I read the comic back in October and finally filmed a video review early this week (look for it on the site later today).  It's a simple story of Cowboys & Indians (sorry for the lack of PC), with aliens thrown into the premise.  It's so simple it works.  You'll see more in my review.  It may not be the greatest story but I do think it has the potential to make a good movie.  Throw in the 3-D technology and fun-factor is bound to increase.

The comic is no longer in print.  You can probably assume that with the movie moving forward, someone will reprint it.  Thanks again to SirSparkington for tracking down a copy for me.  With DreamWorks, Favreau, Downey Jr and 3-D, you can bet you'll be hearing a lot more about this movie in the months to come.  Yee-haw!

A like the idea but it would be better if the comic was written by DCcomics and the main character was Jonah Hex.

I did. The book is fun, the movie should be fun too. It's not like they are going to be alienating any fans here though (no pun intended). Most people will probably go see this without knowing it has anything to do with the graphic novel, much like Road to Perdition, The Crow, Men In Black, Mystery Men, etc. "
Trust you ;)

I think you're right about people going to see it (without knowing it's a comic).  All those movies you quoted were successes.  What's more, Cowboys & Aliens will be riding on the successful coattails of Holmes & Iron Man (1 & 2) so people will go to see it regardless of the original comics.

I wonder if the reason people don't like 3-D has to do with being a left brain/right brain person.  Again, my review for the comic will be up later today.

I can't stand 3-D it's just a pain in the a$$ , I watched avatar and actually took off my glasses in the middle of the movie and guess what! I could watch the movie fine if I didn't mind that a bush or a flower was fuzzy every 10 min or so, This cowboys movie doesn't really sound interesting to me in the least, I've already seen a vikings vs aliens movie and that pretty much satiated my desire to see anything even remotely similar.

Thats awsome, though it sounds a little stupid, but there's nothing a 3-D can't fix

I think it's great that they're doing a small, indie title... but it's still pretty obscure.  I mean, who bought this when it first came out, let alone has heard of it before this was announced?!

I really hope this movie has crazy amounts of 3-D.
