Back in September we heard that Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr's next movie together wouldn't be Iron Man or The Avengers. Their next movie won't be Marvel related but it will be based on a comic book. Cowboys & Aliens from Platinum Studios is finally headed to the big screen.
The movie has been on DreamWorks mind for some time. Robert Downey Jr has even been attached to the movie since the Summer of 2008. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (both are set to produce) have been working on the script with Damon Lindelof (Lost, Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk). Jon Favreau has decided he wanted to direct this after Iron Man 2. The plan is for a 2011 release.
The latest word is shooting will begin in July. Yesterday I brought up Favreau's views on 3-D technology and how he thought about doing Iron Man 2 in 3-D after seeing the early stages of James Cameron's Avatar. Favreau will get his chance to play in 3-D as The Daily Beast has mentioned that DreamWorks is strongly considering doing the Western meets Sci-Fi in three-dimensions.
I read the comic back in October and finally filmed a video review early this week (look for it on the site later today). It's a simple story of Cowboys & Indians (sorry for the lack of PC), with aliens thrown into the premise. It's so simple it works. You'll see more in my review. It may not be the greatest story but I do think it has the potential to make a good movie. Throw in the 3-D technology and fun-factor is bound to increase.
The comic is no longer in print. You can probably assume that with the movie moving forward, someone will reprint it. Thanks again to SirSparkington for tracking down a copy for me. With DreamWorks, Favreau, Downey Jr and 3-D, you can bet you'll be hearing a lot more about this movie in the months to come. Yee-haw!
