Could the Next Movie Superman Be Older?

Facebook's Batman says as much...

I think the public's ready for this.
I think the public's ready for this.

The rumors and official statements revolving around Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN reboot seem to tell different stories about how old the Man of Steel is going to be. Snyder’s said they’re going to be focusing on Supes’ early days, yet those rumors about Jon Hamm getting cast endure. Oddly enough, some more grain for the rumor mill has been poured from an interview pertaining to THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

See, a lot of you might not realize that Batman was in the movie. Armie Hammer, who plays the Winklevoss twins in the FACEBOOK ORIGINS movie, was set to play Batman in George Miller’s aborted JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. As such, DC superheroes came up when he was talking to Vulture about his latest movie.

And the exchange played out thusly…

You've made a lot of people's Superman fantasy-casting lists. Did you have your people put in a call to Zack Snyder, who's directing the reboot?
[ Laughs .] You know what's funny? I did talk to my people recently about that for the first time, and I think they're going a little older with Superman. I hear they're going 35, 40.

Really? Wow, Jon Hamm will be excited.
Yeah, I don't know what that might mean.

Truthfully, honestly and emphatically… I’d prefer to see a movie about an older, not-quite-middle-age Superman. We’ve already seen him at his prime plenty of times and we’ve seen ten years (and two TV shows) of content about his youth… so why not a more seasoned Kal El?  == TEASER ==

KINGDOM COME is one of the seminal Supes stories. We don’t need to necessarily have the Apocalyptic super war or the copious allusions to Revelations, but I think a story about the Man of Steel coming out of retirement would capture the public imagination. Hell, it captured Jay-Z's enough for him to title one of his albums after the comic.

Would audiences think him any less heroic for having thinning hair or graying temples? Let's see an older Superman ascend rapidly and smash up through this "agist" glass ceiling!

This would be cool to see as a contrast to so many origin superhero movies. I know when introducing a character to the general public, it's a good idea to visit the origin during the plot of the film. But a character like Superman where his origin is know to the countless unwashed masses, it wouldn't be necessary to cover Smallville again

Kingdom Come is a story that transcends Superman. It would be awesome as a crossover between Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Capt. Marvel etc. I would pee my pants if they made a movie of it. Alex Ross' art is so luscious and there are so many character cameos. I think even Rorschach had a panel.

Older Superman is fine.  "Thinning hair or graying temples" is not because it adds what is decidedly unnecessary to the larger Superman mythos, the idea that Superman can age and die.  Just like the idea that Superman can have a one-night-stand and end up with an illegitimate son was rejected, this idea of Superman dying- not in combat, not saving the world, but to the decline of age and time- will be rejected.

On paper, I'm sure it sounds just as dynamic, flawed, human, ground-breaking, and characterizing as making Superman someone who found it hard to say "Goodbye", who doesn't end up with Lois, and who has a child.  But if you take ten seconds to take the pulse of the average filmgoer's perception of Superman, you'll get the same derision - instead of "Stalkerman" you'll hear "Walkerman", "Baldingman", "JustForMan"... the whole point of the Nietzschean ideal is that it is an ideal.

Okay now 35-40 is the typical age for a Hollywood leading man it could mean that Superman will not be a young man as previously believed and just a regular adult besides 35-40 is to young compared to the version of Superman in Kingdom Come who looked around 60s-70s.

I prefer an older Superman. Not like Kingdom Come old, but just old enough to be experienced.

I'd prefer to see him as old as he is in the comics currently early 30s.

Nooo! That would totally suck! It's better that he stays a young or a middle age man forever! It's better that way. ;)

Suoes should be in his 30a, early 40s. Jon Hamm will be perfect for the role.

How many times have we seen his origin on film?  Just Donner's Superman right?  Superman II-IV & Superman Returns aren't origin stories.  That said, I agree we don't need to see another origin story, but that's not necessarily the same as the "early days" of Superman.

Regarding age, I don't mind them casting youngish (as with Reeve and Routh) because of sequel potential.  The upper 30s would be pushing it for me.

Survey of those who've played an adult Superman on screen (Ages are approximate using film release dates not shooting dates): Kirk Alyn 38; George Reeves 37; Christopher Reeve 26; Dean Cain 27; Brandon Routh 27.

I would be for an older Superman, even one along the lines of Kingdom Come.  Now, I would NEVER want to see Kingdom Come made into a movie but the idea of an aged Superman would be interesting.

If they could do that and pull it off. I would see it MULTIPLE times. I don't understand why the Brandon Routh movie did so bad, I actually enjoyed it enough to go see it twice.

Jon Hamm will be great as Superman, I'm sure. He is my candidat. And Brandon Routh will never get this role, no reason to hire an actor from previous movies when you are making a reboot, and, believe me, mr. Snyder knows that very well.

I'm willing to take a chance with an older portrayal of Superman, it ironically brings a fresh dynamic by going with a seasoned hero. Just don't make him washed up and worn out.

No I don't want to see an older Superman. I want early 30's late 20's Superman made in the modern day. The same deal they gave Batman.

The only problem with using the older age in a movie is being careful about historical references and making sure the character fits into the universe the viewer sees him in. He has to portray the experienced, wiser, hero who has been through this career for some time. If It's believable it could work.

This is a good point because a lot of the conflict in the existing past films comes from Superman's relative inexperience and wouldn't play well with a hero that's supposed to be seasoned.

If supes ends up being a old dude i will keep my hands off the movie! I think the actor should between 28 to 32 young enough to be cast in sequels... Cast a unknown make a open cast, tired of seeing the same actors all over.

I don't really mind what age he is as long as the movie makes sense and isn't just all slo mo. In fact I actually liked the idea that they said about the story and that was like Superman coming to grips with the fact that he is superman and coming to be the man of steel.
