Comics Anonymous: Knowing Your Addiction

How addicted to comics are you?

Before I found C.A., This was a normal Monday afternoon for me.
Before I found C.A., This was a normal Monday afternoon for me.
Hello, welcome to the very first meeting of Comics Anonymous (C.A.). I'm so glad all of you could make it. Wow, we have quite a full room here. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mat "InferiorEgo" Elfring and I am a comicholic. I first realized this when my whole bookshelf was covered with Blackest Night action figures, and immediately after it was overloaded, I got a Green Lantern tattoo. However, there were more tell-tale signs of this. They were all around me, and I just couldn't see them. It wasn't until G-Man, Babs, Tom, and Red L.A.M.P. approached me at my house and gave me an intervention letting me know that I had gone too far. Nevertheless, I've come to terms with it, and I am now ready to help anyone else that needs it. Now, let's get this started.

We all love comic books and almost everything about them; otherwise, you wouldn't be on this website. But how much do we love comics? And when does said love become way too much? Through my personal trials and tribulations, I have figured out 5 areas in your personal life you can take a closer look at to determine whether or not you too may be addicted to the world of comic books. Some of these things may be things you've done in your past or thought about doing. I can tell all of you with confidence and regret that I've actually done or tried a few of these things mentioned below.
== TEASER ==

Your Decor

Sure, there's nothing wrong with a poster of Wolverine here or there. You'd expect any comic book fan to have that. Sure, an action figure on your desk is pretty cool. But what about when that's all you see? Is your room covered with comic related posters? That may not be a sign of a problem; however, is one wall only covered with posters of Maverick? How did you find that many? I didn't even know there was one poster of Maverick. How about your action figures? Do you have enough to make a bookcase over-flow? More importantly, do you have every Force Works character in action figure form on your bookcase? Not only is that highly impressive, but it's also a sign that you're addicted to all things comic books.

Naming Things

Many people will tell you that they named their precious little pet after something in their life: a relative, someone they admire, a food they eat daily, but on smaller occasions you'll hear an animal named after a super-hero. And just because you named your Pug " Ted Kord" doesn't necessarily mean you have a problem. This could lead to other problems though. Did you go out of your way to by a blue Volkswagen Beetle, just so you could name your car Ted Kord? Did you buy a English Bulldog and name him Kilowog? Did you try naming your first born son Ras Al Ghul? It all makes sense now, doesn't it?

Clothing

You are what you wear. (Or was that eat?) We all most likely own a piece of clothing or two that displays a character or two from our shared passion. Many of us may even own a hat or wallet that has the Green Lantern symbol on it. Think about this: How many days a week do you wear something comic related, and how many items at the same time are you wearing? Do you have a Spider-Man shirt, Captain America hat, Iron Man pants, and Brother Voodoo socks on at the same time? Do you plan on wearing your Silver Surfer shirt, purple Hulk pants, Dr Strange cape, and Namor shoes (with the wings) tomorrow? Do you plan on calling yourself a Defender all day? You may have to admit you have a problem.

Your Dialogue

As you may have noticed, throughout this article, many characters names are scattered about, with links back to their sections. Why? Well, mainly because some of these characters aren't A-List, and some of them aren't even B-List characters. When speaking to others who love comic books, this can be acceptable; however, when speaking to those who don't read comics, this is atrocious. (Not Atrocitus) Referencing the horrors of what happened in Sector 666 out-of-context is confusing enough to people, but referencing that in-context is a hour long lecture on Green Lantern, and the people around you will not appreciate it. Just try and remember, although many people have seen the Watchmen film, only a few of us understand the complexities of the giant female organ shaped monster at the end of the book. Most people don't know of its existence. I assure you of that. If you can't go a hour without mentioning something comic related in any situation, you have a problem.

Your Life Plans

It's no secret that many of us want to work in the industry someday, or when we grow up, depending on your age, but sometimes, it goes a little too far. Sure, we may have all wanted to be Galactus when we were 4, but what about when you're 28? Do you still want to be Galactus? (yes) How about at the end of your life? How do you want to be buried? In a cemetery? Cremated and have your ashes spread across the Great Plains? Or would you rather have your body shoved into a refrigerator for your loved one to find? Do you want to have your funeral with two giant Black Lantern logo banners flowing beside your casket? If so, it's time to admit what you already know.

Now that I've opened your minds to what took me so long to realize, I implore you to look within yourself and question: Am I a comicholic?

Hey hey I think we can all agree that buying all those comic build a figures was necassary, I mean doesn't it bother you when you just have this random queen brood head lying on your table? Plus that walmart exclusive 6 inch war machine was so worth it and the comic series X men Deadpool and the not so good articulation but awesome detail Venom was worth it too....my god I have a problem eehhh beats something that could kill me.

Hell yeah I'm one. I've got a whole wall dedicated to all my Marvel posters/pin-up. My Marvel dvd's & comic related dvd's are all chronologically organized by release date & in a separate stack from my other dvd's. As far as terminology goes it depends on who I'm conversing with. If it's a comic fan then I use more comic term's like retcon & stuff like that. If it's a wrestling fan then I use wrestling terms such as kayfabe, babyface, heel, etc. I own 2 shirts a Captain America 1 & Spider-Man vs Doctor Octopus 1 but I've got like 4 or 5 TNA Impact shirts & countless WWE shirts

Until I took all the posters down to reorganize them my wall was ceiling to floor with posters.  But that was on purpose, it was a giant collage art project to me.  I have so many comics shirts I can wear nothing but them.  They are cool too, how could I not get them.
And i am a comic artist.  So Its OK.  Really, I can quite anytime I want.  I just don't want to.
I actually did quite for a few years I think it was, but Earth X brought me right back.  Now I buy 7-whatever comics a week.  Now that's a problem.  Because I don't have unlimited funds.

Thanks for sharing, InferiorEgo!  Hi, my name is Aerock, a.k.a. "aZuLPiNoY," and I'm a... a... a comicholic.  I've been hooked on comics since I was 7, and over 20 years later, I still have a comic habit.  This is my first Comics Anonymous meeting.  I used to say, "Comics are my anti-drug."  How ironic... I am powerless over comics and my life has become unmanageable!  I just... can't.... stop!

Oh, also I can't go to long without talking about comics and superheroes, but its hard when that is your living and all you know.  Takes the majority of your time.
But Gene Colan said that comic artists live in a bubble.  And my family said, thats you.

I'm 16 and I want to be superhero, I don't think that's an addiction because who doesn't want help make the world a better place? But I do have a good number of Marvel/DC t-shirts, plus my epic Cap jacket xD My desk does have a good number of action figures on it, but that's because it a freakin' small desk :P And my friends stopped my from talking about comic book related things because ever time I did, they just stared at me with that "Oh pleas shutup" look xD And I have wondered about naming my kids (if I ever have any) after a comic books character <_<

Hello, My name is Kyle, a.k.a CaptainGenisVell, I've read comics since I can actually remember though I would have said a year ago I was a 'casual' reader but it seems that my addiction has sneaked up on me as I now find myself craving my next comicbook delivery; a perfect example of this would be today where I received 'Avengers' #1 in the post, I ran to get it nearly foaming at the mouth and after reading it came down from a high.
I don't see the problem with this drug as it's educational......of sorts lol

Crap in a hat, My name is Ron "Roninidas" and  I think I have a problem.  This is my office decor.

That's just half of my office.  I am an Active Duty member of the Coast Guard.  I utilize Comics in my everyday dialouge and do stop to give the quick and  necessary backstory for those persons not Comicly inforlmed or in the know like me.  I often times wear my Captain America T-Shirt twice a week and all my boxers... are... are... Superhero Related, **sniff** Sniff**.

I am not married, but I tried to talk my last serious girlfriend into naming our hypothetical child Steve, Middle name Rogers.  I often compare Leaders in my organization too Captain America and tell them what I think Cap would ahve done in that given situation.

I too hope to one day undergo The Super Coastie Serum when it coomes avaialble, I am hoping that my knowledge of Captain America will put me as a shoe in as the Test Subject.

I don't want a funeral.  Instead, I plan to be cremated.  I want my ashed put into a paper mixer; for I intend to chronicle my life into a Graphic Novel Format and have my ashes used as the pages with my lifes story, then ahve them issued accordingly with a Variant Number 1 Cover and distributed amongst my friends and loved ones.  Everyone has told me this was a sick and twisted idea, I still think it is awesome.  I'm just saying.

This is the top shelf at my work where I have all my important manuals.

My name is Jessie aka The Mess1428. I'm not sure if I am truly considered a comicholic besides the part where I talk about it a lot. But I say that I am more of a businessman than a regular comicholic because I created JG Comics and have a giant blog about my idea for the DC Universe Movies. I do have over 200 comic books. And I did create a History of the DC Universe class. I only have one student, who incidentally was my teacher in high school (and a woman). I have another student (my girlfriend) who doesn't do much of the work... I actually made a reading list of major books so that they could understand everything. As for the problem of getting laid... It's easy if you lose your virginity BEFORE you become a comic book nerd. Or the other way is to find a girl who just happens to be into Batman. (Like my girlfriend). I don't wish to be a specific hero but I do have my idols. (Nightwing). I could possibly take the Batman route and be my own hero in my own town, but I'm not rich. I do plan, however, to become a comic book writer for DC Comics in the future. I do already have a son, and it just so happens, his name is Damian. His mother named him before I knew he was born so that wasn't my fault. I do have a friend whose brother named his son: Thor Vanilla Brogan. He's not even a comic book nerd... I think he's just crazy. I call the TV. It actually led me and a friend to make up baby names like Hulk Mint and Batman Chocolate. It was just a joke, by the way. So am I a comicholic? You decide.

If you want to know what's in the reading list for the History of the DC Universe class, PM me for it.

Well, my status.

Decor:
1 Batman poster
1 Spider-man poster
1 Superman poster
1 Hulk poster

Naming Things:
I would name a pet after a comic character. I have a plant named after a character from Detective Conan. I would never name a child after a comic book.

Clothes:
2 Spider-man shirts
1 Batman shirt
2 Dragon Ball Z shirts

Dialog:
I'm pretty clear there. I tend to talk more about mystery novels. Though I do talk about Detective Conan manga.

"People think it's an obsession. A compulsion. As if there were an irresistible impulse to act. It's never been like that. I chose this life. I know what I'm doing. And on any given day, I could stop doing it. Today, however, isn't that day. And tomorrow won't be either."

Thanks for sharing, FadeToBlackBolt!  My name's aZuLPiNoY and I'm a comicholic.  Tomorrow is Wednesday, which is normally new comic book day at the local shops.  I just remembered, however, that due to the 3 day holiday weekend we just had, everything's been pushed back a day, right?  That means that I have to wait till... till... THURSDAY?!  I can't take it!  I'm already jonezing bad & It's only 1 AM on Wednesday!  I have to wait till the truck to ship it on THURSDAY?!  AHHHHHH!!!  I need help!

Since 5yrs old,  fanatic at 10, and guru at almost 30.  I only buy the Superhero shirts that look like the costumes (you know what I mean).  I have a full zip red and blue spidey hoody and a venom hoodie, a black batman hoody with ears, oh and I bought that ridiculous Captain America hoodie.
When I tell my friends that I plan to sell half of my 6,000 comics, they just laugh and laugh.
oh yeah and once I took my girlfriend to Superman Returns, on HER birthday!  That was unforgivable.
