Comic Vine Wiki Update: Comic Book TV Shows

Now you'll be able to add TV shows and episodes along with adding reviews to old and new shows!

It's not secret that Comic Vine has an incredibly vast wiki section encompassing all comic book characters. We have all the different series they've been in and we even have movies featuring characters that have appeared in actual comic books. But of course, there's been on thing missing - television shows.

This is something I wanted added to our database for some time. I finally put my foot down and now all can add television series and episodes to the site, provided they deal with comic book characters or characters that have appeared in comics.

No Caption Provided

What that means is we can have shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man 67, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and of course, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Walking Dead. You can also add shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xena and The X-Files since they have had comic book series. Live action or animated shows can be added.

Normal wiki-rules will be enforced. The main thing, NO PLAGIARISM. Do not copy episode summaries from any other source. You can include the official episode synopsis if you can find it, in the body of the episode, just as we add comic book issue solicits on the issue pages (so that means in italics). If you are not sure if it is an official synopsis, do not add it.

You do need an image for each episode. It helps if you can find an official image or image from the episode that has been released. It may be hard in some cases (like with old episodes of Batman 66, Shazam! or Green Hornet). A standard image can be used but think about how that will look if you check out an individual issue page and see how the past issues are displayed on screen.

If you have any questions about what can or cannot be added, ask a moderator. But what it comes down to is this will be pretty similar to how movies are added except there are episodes. Or think of the series as a comic book volume and the episodes are the issues.

We will not separate a show by seasons unless the series underwent a new branding or relaunch (like Justice League changing to Justice League Unlimited -- separate shows). We will go with episode one as #101, episode two as 102 followed by #201 for the first episode of season 2 and so on. Are there any shows that had more than one hundred episodes in one season?

Do not add an episode to the database more than one week before it airs. Characters should not be added until it is known for certain who will be appearing as sometimes what is listed in the description may end up changing. Adding information too far in advanced or adding inaccurate info will obviously result in a wiki-ban.

When can you start adding?!?

The plan is for Tuesday, September 24 around 12 p.m. PST.

Once the episode is added, you can add a summary from the episode including spoilers (in the portion after the official solicit). Be sure to make it a SUMMARY. Do not describe the episode scene by scene. That is not necessary or wanted.

You will also be able to write user reviews for each episode.

Have fun. Let's hear it for making the wiki even bigger and better than before!

"Do not copy episode summaries from any other source."

And don't make them 50 paragraphs long too, like a load of the character pages.

@mucklefluga: Exactly. We do not need scene by scene breakdowns.

What about actors/VAs. Does that not matter much or will there be a system for that?

So, something like Star Trek qualifies by having had various comic books. Do the spin-offs that didn't have their own comic books qualify as well?

And, since I see that this is already in the Editing and Tools forum, does this include characters themselves in the episode or does cosplaying a character count if it were, say, in an episode of the OC that I just happened to see back in the day? (My vote is characters only, but clarity would be king.)

eh that seems doubtful, OC has nothing to do with comics even if it did have a cosplayer in it.

@daltonmunnal: it is all one big franchise so I don't see why not, to be clear though you are just talking about Enterprise and Voyager right?

This could be cool. This is also where things could get weird. At what point does anime count for this category? You may eventually reach critical mass of visual media overload. May Comicvine crush its competition under its invincibly super massive thumb. We need some creative page layouts people!

@renchamp: treat it the same as movies though basically, it needs to have a comic series and cause I'm sure it will probably come up I would assume a show like Comic Book Men that is about comics probably shouldn't be added since it doesn't have a comic but it may be allowed since it is comic related and has comic people in it.

@g_man, what do you think, should Comic Book Men be added? it doesn't have a comic but it does have some historical significance as a sort of documentary of the industry/hobby. If so how far would that extend though, would a show like Heroes of Cosplay be ok since every episode has cosplay of comic/manga charatcers?

@mezmero: if the anime has a manga if would be ok, it is the same thing as any number of Batman cartoons and comics.

I understand there are a lot of TV version series that are taken from comic book series in the course of years, but I'm just thinking majority of the members will be jumping to create "TV shows" sections on the "most" recent or current running shows. Is or are the Mods going to regulate the traffic or it is just "first come, first serve" concept. I'm thinking all this because I would like to add things to the TV show section on various comic book characters, but their shows are either currently running or are very recent, and I don't want to jump into something that someone might have gotten a head start on a TV show section and basically intrude.

There will likely be some TV specific concepts now (I don't see how there couldn't be.) Perhaps there could be a list of characters that cosplay (OC and Bones for instance)

@batsymyplaything: first come first serve, nobody has access before it goes live tomorrow so I don't think anything will be added unless the staff add stuff themselves before hand which is a possibility. Current shows probably will be added first, most likely Agents of SHIELD will be the first show added, but as long as people keep in mind that anything added must be comic related everything should be ok, mods will be watching though to make sure valid shows are added and people aren't breaking any rules.

@renchamp: @razzatazz: I still don't see cosplaying as being particularly comic related, it is its own sub-culture and yes people dress up as comic characters but I think that is stretching things. I take comic related as being as similar as possible to comic versions even if they are modified they still have the same core essence I guess, some person dressing up like say Wolverine isn't the same as Wolverine in the comics, movies, cartoons or even the anime. I couldn't draw an amateur comic in my room, never publish it and then add it to the wiki so an amateur putting on a costume isn't really equal to Marvel officially picking an actor that best portrays the character and making a show or film about them.

Even looking at something like Big Bang Theory, they have cosplayed before but they talk about comic books from time to time and make reference to the sub-culture fairly regularly so it is somewhat comic related, to me that is right on the border of what should/shouldn't be allowed, on what side of the border I'm not sure yet but since it is a show that could bring in a lot of traffic I'd say it probably leans a bit on the add side.

@pikahyper: I don't think example such as The Big Bang Theory should be included because the show is orientated toward four scientists that are just comic book fans. Yes, they do perform cosplay and talk about certain comic book series and sometimes specific issues, but I feel this addition of "TV shows" should be only for shows that were focused on a comic book character or series, and I agree, even if a show started first as a TV show and then had series of comic books based on the show, then it's fine to include the whole show.

Also, I'm looking through various wiki pages of various characters and I was wondering if any registered Comic Vine member can add something to the "Related Pages" column cause I'm having hard time figuring out how to make an addition because I wanted to add a "TV shows" link on a particular wiki forum page of a particular character in the "Related Pages" column, just like "Movies" link. In the "TV shows" page, it would have a list of shows that were created based on that character and if someone would just click on a particular show, it'll take them to a page that has the episodes listed, which those listed episode links will take them to the description of that specific episode.

Cosplay does not count. Also, ask yourself if something is worth being added. If Cosplay appeared in a show, that doesn't add a whole lot to the character.

Comic Book Men doesn't have a place. Same with Big Bang Theory. No comic. I would really love to see people add shows that matter and no try to add some random show that might've had a one-shot comic that no one remembers.

@batsymyplaything: well I only brought up BBT cause it was mentioned somewhere else and it comes up a lot in comic culture, I don't think it should be added but from a web traffic stand point it might be worth having even if it isn't super related.

The feature won't be released until tomorrow and those menus are not editable by anyone other then the engineers so when the new page type is released I believe the links in the Related Pages menu will be updated to include the new TV Shows type by the engineers, I'm guessing there might be a widget on the pages as well showing TV shows that are associated but none of that will be viewable until the shows page type is added.

@renchamp: far as I see it the line is just like movies, some stuff is obvious other stuff isn't and some will probably have to be discussed but I am confident in the editors, at this point in the sites evolution most people know what is ok to add and as long as people help each other out even new editors should have no problem picking things up after a little help.

From what I've read from Tony though this is the best way I could sum it up: An entire TV series as a whole (not just a few episodes here and there) needs to be comic related to be added and by comic related I mean based on comic characters/teams or be the source material for comics. At first I thought being about/including comics was enough based on Tony saying "deal with comic book characters" but I had to rethink that after his last post about Comic Book Men not being allowed.

Batman Beyond, the X-Files, Incredible Hulk, X-Men from the 90s, heck, even the Lone Ranger. It should be shows that feature CHARACTERS that have been in a comic. It's okay it the show came first like Buffy.
