Comic Vine Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Spider-Man Animated TV Series

And the #1 Peter Parker cartoon is...

Our month of celebrating Spider-Man continues! This week, we wanted to find out what your favorite Spidey animated show is. There's been a total of 8 over the decades and a good amount of them bring their own fun and/or unique qualities to the table. After 2 full days of voting, more than 400 Comic Viners chimed in and a clear winner has been picked: Spider-Man (1994)!

Watch the following video for +15 nostalgia.
Watch the following video for +15 nostalgia.

The '90s animated series webbed up the competition with ease. Seriously, it was like that one time Spider-Man swiftly incapacitated Wolverine in an alleyway (apologies, Logan fans). The popular program earned a whopping 46% of the votes and second place was a safe distance behind it, earning 39%. Odds are quite a few of us grew up with Spider-Man: The Animated Series (it ran from '94 to '98), so nostalgia's definitely playing a decent role here and understandably so. That said, there's a reason so many of us have fond memories of the cartoon! The animated series was able to incorporate dozens of characters from Spider-Man's world -- and even some other big characters like the X-Men -- and overall, was quite a pleasant time... even if I can't recall a single moment of Spider-Man actually throwing a punch at one of his dangerous enemies. It seemed like he always used webbing, kicks or throws, right? Despite the lack of Peter punches, this was a program that had many of us glued to our TV sets on weekend mornings and loving every second of it. And, for some of us, this is possibly the program that got us interested in the webhead's comic books! Let's see what a couple of Viners had to say about the top two picks.

Viner Post for 1994 Spider-Man is by Ninjablade09

"I love Spectacular with all my heart, but i have to give this to the 90's series. Sure censoring on the punching didn't make for great action scenes but who cares. This show adapted some of the best Spidey stories of all time. Heck they took the show as far as making Harry into Green Goblin after Norman, and having Peter and Mary Jane get married. The relationship between Spider-Man and the Norman Goblin was great and showed that while the hate each others guts, both care deeply for Harry. This show added a new layer to Eddie Brock which I liked, because comic Eddie never really had a reason to hate Spider-Man. The show also had some awesome team-ups, my personal favorite being the Daredevil one. Honestly the only thing I would ever want to change is the censoring, and that's only because I would have loved them to do the Death of Gwen Stacy, but the Marry Jane substitute was fine. Christopher Daniel Barnes is always the voice I hear in my head when Spidey yells 'Mary Jane!'"

Viner Post for The Spectacular Spider-Man is by cmaprice

"The Spectacular Spider-Man isn't merely the best, it's the only great one.

Loving treatment of the source material without stagnation, great fluid action sequences, wonderful voice talents, poetic structure, actual character arcs (if you can believe it!), and it very effortlessly introduces a great many of the noteworthy Spidey rogues in two seasons. It also gives a great simplified reason for them to co-exist. Best of all, the series never stooped to dumb itself down for the kids. It had a clear enough tone to be accessible to everyone, but had a complex enough take and patiently crafted arcs (unlike Ultimate) to keep adults interested.

They also managed to make Electro and Sandman very sympathetic villains. They were so often depicted as being fairly two-dimensional in previous cartoon incarnations.

Who doesn't love when the symbiote used a sleeping Peter to trash the Sinister Six? Subtle and menacing. It wasn't in-your-face. He was brutal, and he didn't say a word. They didn't need to have him saying anything in an evil voice; they didn't need to have him breakdancing down the street. Organic, subtle, effective story and character development."

For those interested, here's the poll's results.

  • Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994) 46%
  • The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008) 39%
  • Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981) 5%

  • Spider-Man (1967) 3%
  • Spider-Man Unlimited (1999) 1%

94 Spiderman tv show is the only spidey related tv show I watched, I probably couldn't sit though every episode now, theme song is still good.

Spectacular Spiderman theme song sucks...

I have to say, I'm quite suprised. I liked this show a lot even with all of its flaws but I would've thought that SSM would've been the winner.

My top 3 Spidey cartoons are

Spectacular Spider-Man

Spider Man:The Animated Series

60's Spider-Man

I definitely need to check out more of the filmation series.

I liked the 90s cartoon when i was a kid, but honest if SSM went on as long as the 1990s show it would have been no contest.

Think the best part from that series has to be Secret Wars. It brought together the FF, The X-Men Iron man and Cap. And they were are in the same Universe so it was great to see that the person doing the voice for Iron Man in the 90's cartoon was also the voice of Stark in that episode.

I liked both quite a bit, I actually never noticed that Spider-man didn't throw a punch in The Animated Series. The more you know, I was more interested in the characters, and story arcs. I love the show and still do. Yes even with some of the cheesy dialogue, and the reused animation. I still think it's very good. And I can't really say it's nostalgia if I've watched it recently.

I've also seen Spectacular another great Spidey cartoon that ended way too soon to be replaced with that garbage Ultimate Spider Man. I think it's an unfair comparison in a way. If The Animated Series came out the same time as Spectacular. I strongly believe that The Animated Series would blow it out of the water. However being newer it has the better action scenes, and better animation, even if I prefer the old series style better. It also had a bigger budget so they didn't have to reuse footage.

But they both were truly amazing in their own way, and no one should be upset on who won imo. The only thing we should be upset on, is there isn't a good current spidey show :(

No, the 60's did not end in a cliffhanger.

If Spectacular lasted longer it would undoubtably the greatest spidey cartoon. It was only 26 episodes long, so I feel we didn't get enough content to judge it.

Oh no, I missed this poll. But honestly I'm not sure what I would have voted for. Spectacular was a great show with a not so great ending. I enjoy Ultimate Spider-Man as well although it has so many weird elements in it like Spider-Bikes and S.H.I.E.L.D and Nova being a complete idiot sometimes...

But I have to say I probably would have voted for The animated series as well. It just managed to cover up so many important events from Spidey's history and sometimes really went more into detail than you can expect from a TV cartoon. I really love Marvel's 90s cartoons like X-Men, Hulk and Silver Surfer. They are so much better than what we get today with that sometimes embarassing Avengers Assemble (It's terrible they cancelled Earth's mightiest heroes for THAT) or the mostly lame Agents of S.M.A.S.H.. I like the cinematic universe a lot, but it's a shame how it influences the cartoons.

Okay, so that's an exception, but 95% of them did.

Does anybody remember the 1981 series? I remember seeing the episode with sandman on a saturday morning in around 1989-ish here in the UK and him scaring me! It had such an impact that he remains a favourite of mine. The same goes with Juggernaut's appearance in Amazing Friends. Classic.

Absolutley love both of those shows but mainly for nostalgic reasons, Spetacular Spider-Man was by far Spidey's best show.

And to think I was so excited for Ultimate (the first Spidey show to be created soley by Marvel) ...sigh... I can barely watch an epiosde. It's just awful.

I have it on DVD but I haven't watched all of it yet.

When I bought it I was hoping it would be like a solo, more serious version of Amazing Friends, but I found it kind of dull to be honest.

Its more like it has more of the poorer aspects of AF but fewer of the good points

I've still got a lot of episodes to watch yet though.

I honestly think the 90's series and Spectacular are about equal in quality. Both were really good. I don't understand why some of the people here are bashing the 90's series.
