Comic Vine Battle of the Week: Movie Dredd vs. Movie Batman

Firepower takes on skill. Who's left standing?

I won't lie, I REALLY wanted to use movie Wolverine this week to coincide with his latest movie, but I was having trouble finding a properly balanced match. So, instead of me rushing a blatantly unfair match out right now, expect me to use him sometime down the road and hopefully it'll be worth the wait and way more balanced. But for now, it's time to place raw firepower against tactical skill!

Karl Urban's Judge Dredd is packing quite a firearm with a lot different ammunition options (explosive, stun, incendiary, etc) and he briefly proved he's a brutal yet effective hand-to-hand combatant when he faced a fellow judge. Also, the opening scene shows he's definitely a good shot. However, Christian Bale's Batman has impressive stealth abilities, his own variety of nonlethal gear and his skill certainly shouldn't to be underestimated.

Will Dredd's lethal advantages overcome The Dark Knight or does this setting allow Batman to eventually knockout or incapacitate the Judge?

Comic Vine Battle of the Week Rules

  • Combatants are in character (both sides think the other is a villain).
  • This is a random encounter.
  • They're fighting in a generic downtown city setting. It's unpopulated and at night and all standard city lights remain on. Assume they start roughly 50 feet apart and visible. However, there's a fair amount of cover between them (parked vehicles and such). The entire area is on limits. This means alleys, rooftops, building interiors, etc.
  • Batman is in his prime condition.
  • All characters have standard gear.
  • Incapacitation, knockout or death all count as elimination.

Yes, I previously wrote an article on this battle, but that's just my opinion and it was still hugely divided. This now gives YOU the chance to determine the winner. You all have until NEXT Friday to research the characters, debate and vote!

Friday's update will include one Viner's argument for the winning character (only posts in the poll thread will be considered *link above*), the staff's thoughts and if we're extra lucky, thoughts from writers, artists and others in the industry! Viners, it's understandable that debates over "who would win?" can get heated, but please try to keep the conversations informative and not personal.

Feel free to make future match suggestions in the comments below or via Gregg's Twitter page.

I believe Batman could try to take apart Dredd's gun which he has done so quickly before but Batman has never seen Dredd's gun the slight chance he has wouldn't help his chances since guns can just be put together again

struggled with this one, however I would go with Dredd.

Years of academy training in H2H and fire-arms and all the tech in his helmet (infa-red etc) plus he is willing to kill and not hold back.

It comes down to, can Batman take the fight close range. I see Batman using smoke and darkness to close the distances, making Dredd's range advantage useless. Up close, Batman takes him. Course, we're doing movie Batman so, Batman can also use the cannons on his batcycle to take out Dredd too.

Movie Batman is much weaker than comics batman. Nolan tried to make those movies realistic... I think if this Batman joins the Justice League he will be dead on their first mission.

@k4tzm4n: I'm voting for Batman. Combination of EMP, stealth, speed, cunning, sonar vision and sleeping darts should do the trick, especially considering that he also have bulletproof armour and he defeated people with guns many times:

Hah, I was waiting for someone to bring up the Bat Tranquilizers.

My only problem is that why didn't Batman use them against Bane during there first fight? He seemed more than willing to use his gadgets unless it wasn't part of his standard gear which Batman couldn't use if this is a random encounter.

Another problem is that Batman's armor most likely will not provide any protection against Dredd's arsenal.

In Dredd, another Judge's bullet pierced through a wall and through Dredd's body. Of Course, that was an armor-piercing bullet so that will have to be taken into account.

@crimsoncake: In defense of Batman, your problem will not matter in this fight. Also I think Bane is a lil higher foe for batman to just dart him with... Both are highly trained warriors after all. Will take more than a dart to finish Bane off with that mask of his and who knows, would make him angrier and could've beserked Bats. Plus Batman's tactics were his own choice. And so were Bane's...

But on point, Batman has the tranquilizers, EMP, smoke bomb, sonar, and TDK gear. It took on large dogs and the primary purpose of it isn't to fully make him invulnerable from 7 mil bullets anyway, that would hinder his movements. And k4tzm4n also points out that Batman is cunning and stealthy. Which comes extremely useful in this scenario. Plus his EMP should do the trick with a 50 feet apart distance. Dredd's tech goes out. He can't see in the dark as well as Batman. And he'll be vulnerable and exposed in the Dark Knight's homeground. Plus Batman has taken out highly trained CQB combatants before without using any weapons which requires a lot of skills. This is prime Batman with his best regular gear so he is one hell of a badass.

Only problem for Batman is Dredd's aim and that he has proven to be an excellent CQB combatant. He seems like he's above average than most (taking out the judges and predicting CQB tactics from his enemies) and he's an excellent shot close ranged but not as great in medium. Long range wise, he has an exremely slim chance at taking down Batman. Medium range, slim chance. Short, right on Batman's hide (I'm guessing Dredd won't be stupid. He sees Batman and knows this guy might be packing some shit. Probs sees that Batman ain't some street thug so Dredd needs more area to aim at. Nobody can shoot Batman on his head, too small a target and way too obvious for him). But in the chance that Dredd does sense something and shoots head level, he's gone. First, and again, the dark is not Dredd's usual territory, it's Batman's. Second, it takes a while to present and aim and then pull the trigger head level so it makes an obvious movement for Batman to notice. Do that Krav Maga shit on Dredd then a finish him (I'd just tranquilize him then concuss him for safety but I'd doubt Bruce would do that)

Dredd.

Bat's best display of combat skills were in the first during his training. Everything after that was straight up brawling IMO.

Dredd took a beating, got shot in the stomach and still was able to get the win. And we don't even know if he got that looked at after the task was over.

Bats got stabbed by a three incher and was down considerably.

Dread. Going with Movie Dread.

  1. He Kills.
  2. Has every conceivable weapons advantage.
  3. Good Shot.
  4. Competent and tactical.
  5. Range > Close Combat in the real world kiddies.

Dread has this, even if he had only one movie to Nolan's three.

I'd be more confident in your assessment if you knew how to spell Dredd's name... :)

Hmm. Another good one.

Batmans EMP Rifle could take out alot of Dredds tech/gear including the Law Giver possibly.

Dredd is one tough son of a b*tch and if it came to h2h Idk if Bats can just "kung-fu" him with ease like he does most of his opponents. With that said I'm slightly leaning towards Bats.....idk this is tough

If its Movie batman then he will lose. Unless he can do a stealth surprise on Dredd there's not much he can do with that kind of firepower. Especially since Nolan made bats so "human".

But if its Comic batman then he'll own Dredd. Bats avoided Darkseids omega beam (Though I assume that's PIS). Beaten the JLA and Superman before. So Dredd can't do much with Comics Batman version.

Batman can easily beat Dredd, all Dredd has is his gun's,his hand to hand combat is nothing in comparison to Batman's fighting capabilities he is a master of just about every form of martial arts,Dredd is use to his gun doing everything for him and he barely took down another Judge in a one on one fight,Batman is use to taking down multiple opponents, either using gun's or hand to hand combat.Batman would easily dodge and destroy Dredd's gun and once he get's in close for close quarter's combat Judge Dredd will recieve the worst ass beating he has ever had in his life.Batman FTW!

Interesting to see everyone's perspective here, but personally, I would give the favor to Judge Dredd. As for being a quick-shot, he was able to fire off a hot-shot into a criminal's mouth while the criminal was holding a hostage at gun-point. Dredd basically killed 30+ (as stated by MaMa's techno expert monitoring the block by cameras). Batman definitely had skill in stealth take-downs, but I honestly don't think he used his League of Shadows training as well as he could have. His style was always based on defense, and he came across more as a brawler, especially in his showdowns against Bane. Dredd is far edgier than Batman, and definitely more ruthless. A single incendiary shot from Dredd's Lawgiver killed a gang of stooges attempting to kill him, not to mention Dredd's own gear with tear gas (also having a breather to protect himself), and flashbangs, which his helmet protects his eyes from.

Dredd's body armor should be able to protect him against the shuriken-like batarangs, meanwhile, he's an incredible marksman. If Batman was assuredly not cooperative with Dredd's demands, he easily would go bloodlust on Batman by using any type of rounds necessary to put Batman down, including armor piercing, hotshot, incendiary, rapid fire, high-ex. I feel that one good shot hitting the mark on Batman would seriously seal his fate, as I don't believe there's anything Batman could do to avoid the Lawgiver, aside from trying to make Dredd run out of ammo, but I believe the Judges always carry an extra clip. Dredd may not be as physically imposing as Bane, but he's most certainly capable of throwing down and throwing hard hits, as well as using his helmet to headbutt. I give the win to Dredd 7/10.

Dredd wounds batman with a shot to the gut, batman hides in the shadows and eventually knocks out Dredd, Dredd wakes up in jail finding that batman bled to death dragging him to the GCPD, Dredd considers having an emotion for a second then breaks out of jail and goes back to bussiness

This is an interesting one for me because on one hand you have movie Batman, who was formally portrayed by Christian Bale, and on the other hand you have Dredd who was played by Karl Urban the man who I hope will now take up the mantle of movie Batman since Bale doesn't want to do it anymore. Oh the irony! @k4tzm4n you know you did this on purpose! lol j/k

But all that aside in all seriousness my vote goes to Dredd.

@riddlerfan77 would you be interested in a CaV like this?

Don't even know Dredd's feats but as of now no, I'm up to my ass in school work and CAV's.
