Comic Vine Battle of the Week: Catman/Deadshot vs. Punisher/Bullseye

It's time for the segment's first 2v2 and it's between some absolutely vicious combatants.

The former members of Secret Six (oh, how I miss that book so much) take on two formidable combatants from the Marvel universe. Both teams have characters with stellar accuracy (Bullseye/Deadshot) and talented fighters with absurd pain tolerance (Punisher/Catman).

Floyd Lawton's sporting incredible aim and his costume will let him take some extra damage (keep in mind, he does indeed pull his shots against Batman, too). The man alleges he can see the individual flaps of a hummingbird's wings and has proven he can tag a speedster, after all. That said, Lester is the character with more skill in close range and has displayed a more frequent use of ricochet shots (not to mention he has indeed blocked a single bullet on at least three occasions). However, Lester does tend to play around from time to time and that could be a huge wildcard against a man who won't hesitate going for a lethal shot.

Meanwhile, Catman's "style is for idiots" mentality has served him extraordinarily well and his ability to endure damage is quite impressive. He's humiliated Tim Drake, given Batman a good bout across rooftops and has technically stalemated Bronze Tiger ( to be fair, BT did say he underestimated Blake at first). Additionally, he's not limited to close range. There have been a few examples of him using daggers and other bladed weapons as throwing weapons, so we'll operate under the assumption he has those here as well. On the other hand, Frank has had the skill and tactics to hang with a wide variety of Marvel's characters and, just like Catman, has endured absolutely insane amounts of punishment over the years.

It's easy to assume they'll pair off this way, but while thinking about this match, be sure to speculate how the fight would play out if they switched enemies, too. No matter which team wins, I imagine the victors will be walking away with some serious injuries.

Comic Vine Battle of the Week Rules

  • Combatants are in character (Punisher/Bullseye will not intentionally try to harm one another. They aren't forced to work together, but they will not purposely attack each other).
  • This is a random encounter.
  • They're fighting in a generic downtown city setting. It's unpopulated and at night. Assume they start roughly 50 feet apart and visible. There's a fair amount of cover between them.
  • Both characters have standard gear (For Bullseye, assume this includes sais and a variety of throwing objects and blades).
  • Incapacitation, knockout or death all count as elimination.

Voting will remain open until this Friday morning (ET) and a new article will go on the homepage shortly after. Please keep in mind voting remains open for 5 days so you can research characters and read the debates presented for both sides. I know it's easy to vote for the characters you like more, but please try to have adequate information on both sides before casting your vote.

Friday's update will include one Viner's argument for the winning team (only posts in the poll thread will be considered and it can't be a scan fest), the staff's thoughts and if we're extra lucky, thoughts from writers, artists and others in the industry! Viners, it's understandable that debates over "who would win?" can get heated, but please try to keep the conversations informative and not personal.

Feel free to make future match suggestions in the comments below or via Gregg's Twitter page.

I'm only familiar with old school Catman, but he seems like he's the weak link here. Isn't he a melee character mixed in with what are primarily ranged opponents?

Unless he has some showings against ranged enemies, I'd call it for Frank and Bully. Even if he does close in, both of them are pretty darn capable hand to hand combatants as well.

Posted by Praetor_fenix

Frank & Lester for sure, both are pretty versatile characters capable of greak marksmanship and brutal H2H, Lester even has adamantium laced skull and fists so pressumably he should be superior in close combat than Catman. Now, don't get me wrong Floyd and Catman have amazing feats i just think they have more pre-defined roles in the fight while Frank and Bullseye's versatility gives them the edge, and since both won't hesitate to kill they'll probably turn that advantage into a pair of unmarked graves.

Punisher kills them all.

Gonna go with Team Frank N Bullseye!

Edited by entropy_aegis

Honestly? Deadshot solos or does enough damage that will allow Catman to seal it.Though Blake is definitely the weak link here.

What he said. It's Team Punisher/ Bullseye who wins

Edited by longbowhunter

This one was tough. Literally 4 of my absolute favorite characters. Still I have to go with team Punisher/Bullseye. Floyd's good but I still think Bullseye would be more skilled. Punisher would beat Catman simply due to his endurance and stamina. Frank is like the Michael Myers of comics.

Edited by LordRequiem

Deadshot will be outshone by Bullseye. And if Bullseye went up against Catman, who has very limited range capabilities by the looks of it he's a goner. Which would leave a fairly simple two vs one scenario. I'm biased, as I despise Deadshot as character.

I expect to see you defend that statement in the poll, sir! Floyd is apparently not receiving nearly as much respect as he deserves.

Check out Secret Six. It's definitely Gail Simone's best work to date.

Catman isn't the weak link by a long shot. He'll close the gap no problem. It's debatable whether he even gets hit, but if he does he's fully capable of tanking a bullet or two. Either Frank or Bullseye will be forced to settle this up close and personal. They're no slouches at hand-to-hand to be sure, but range is not really an advantage vs. Catman.

As the article also points out, Catman is pretty adept with his knifes as well, but he's at his strongest up close. Unless I'm Deadshot, I don't want to get into a range fight with Bullseye and I don't think Catman would settle for that.

Posted by Kerrigan

I'm leaning toward Bullseye/Punisher because of the added firepower, but then I've read nothing of Catman since a 1980's Batman comic.

Think Bullseye has the edge over Deadshot in both crazy skills and fun.

catman/deadshot

Punisher/Bullseye

With their skills would be formidable for any opponent.

Posted by Teerack

Catman would probably die in two seconds and this whole fight would be 2 on 1, so I'm going with Punisher and Bullseye.

Posted by MadeinBangladesh

Hmmm interesting. Gonna go with my boy Punisher and Bullseye.

Posted by fletcher78

If I'm Deadshot and I see Punisher stood fifty feet away all tooled up I'm not taking any chances and Mr. Castle is getting a headshot before he has a chance to move.

This leaves Bullseye left to deal with Deadshot and Catman. Deadshot keeps Bullseye pinned down whilst Catman gets in close. Even with his skills Bullesye can't effectively fight Catman without presenting an opportunity for Deadshot to either take him out or seriously incapacitate him in which case Catman can finish him off.

I'm going for a Deadshot and Catman win.

Posted by ForeverMan

I like Catman and Deadshot more, but they would lose hands down.

Does Catman even exist anymore?

Posted by Cypher4

A Thanos vs Darkseid battle is interesting, but I'd rather see Apocalypse vs Darkseid. I'd also like to see Gladiator (as in Shi'ar) vs Hulk. However, I know too many people would say Hulk simply because he's Hulk. However, Gladiator defeated Colossus like it was nothing and in the cartoon (I know the cartoon doesn't count but the writers of the show obviously thought he was capable do doing it) manhandled Juggernaut - picked him up with one hand and hurled him into the ocean.

As for this battle, I wish I could vote, but I don't anything about either Catman or Deadshot. Without having read comics with them in it, I can't really appraise their abilities.

Edited by manwithoutshame

No offense to Deadshot and Catman, but Punisher and Bullseye is probably the deadliest duo you could create in all of comics.

Edited by Hawkguy

Not really fair if I vote, I know punisher has killed most of the marvel universe, and in terms of hand to hand bullseye took down DD in end of days. I'm not sure if those count but I feel that merits a victory...

Still I won't vote until I read up on more of these 4 characters

Edited by DWrathborne

I have to give this to Catman and Deadshot for one simple reason; There is no way in hell Frank Castle is going to play nice with Bullseye. While the Marvel team is trying to kill each other, the former Secret Six team members are going to take advantage and come out with the win.

A suggestion for a future matches I'd like to see, Mongul vs. Blastaar, and Poison Ivy vs. Typhoid Mary.

Posted by YourNeighborhoodComicGeek

Going to have to root for Bullseye and Punisher.

Posted by marvel_dc_heroes_villains

This all depends on how close Catman can get to the Marvel team. If Deadshot's fire can keep Punisher and Bullseye suppressed, then Catman could advance and deal some serious damage in melee combat, seeing as he has given decent fights to DC's top martial artists. Even if he doesn't kill either Lester or Frank, I think he could at least harass them out of whatever safe spot they may have found and into Floyd's sights. Blake is the wildcard here, being the only close combat character. I think if this tactic works, then Catman and Deadshot win, as there most likely would be no effective teamwork between Team 2.

Posted by EvilPenguin543

Bullseye and Punisher for the win. But I would like to see Deadpool vs. Martian Manhunter. The reason that would be cool is because MM would probably try to get in Wade's head, which can be a scary place.

Posted by sentryman555

Does Catman even exist anymore?

This is a good question. Catman ended up becoming one of my favorite characters from secret six too.

Frank is definitely not as good a shot as Deadshot. And I feel Catman could probably take Daredevil. Considering that I'm gonna say Deadshot and Catman take it. But VERY close. I almost had to put too close to call for this one.

Edited by MrShway88

I think it would of been a more interesting match up if it was Punisher and Deadshot vs Catman and Bullseye, but either way it's a close match but I think Punisher and Bulleyes would win. I think Catman is a great fighter but out of his league here.

Posted by Mr. Kamikaze

Punisher is a dick and kills Bullseye, then gets double teamed by Deadshot and Catman and loses. Obviously...

Posted by superior_prime_maybe

How come we dont see any idw, dynamite or image. I would like to see invincible or spawn or shredder

Edited by Floopay

Hard choice.

I'd stick with Punisher and Bullseye though.

Thanks for reading,

I don't care who wins this battle but I'd really like to see another Secret Six; the best team ever!

Posted by Ace20XD6

Honestly I can't see Punisher and Bullseye working together very well, in fact Punisher would probably take this as a chance to kill him anyways; while Deadshot and Catman have worked well together in the past. For that reason, and that reason alone, I think Deadshot and Catman would win.

Is this even a battle I vote Punisher/Bullseye

Bulls eye has tagged Spider Man, Dare Devil, Electra, and a host of other Bullet Dodgers many times. no way in a cold day of hell is Catman closing the distance. Added in Punisher who Marksmanship has tagged Spider Man, Dare Devil, as well host of skill in shooting equal a super dead Catman.

Catman is by far the weak link. this is a range battle and Punisher as well Bullseye are the top 5 in Range Accuracy in Marvel. This is Bullseye and Frank vs Deadshot match. Bullseye wins as he can rochochet shots or kill people with Tooth Picks from 20 feet away!

Bullseye > Deadshot.

Posted by Hit_Monkey

Deadshot & Catman would take this. Deadshot could take Bullseye, as he plays around in combat. Deadshot only comes close to doing that against Batman. Where he has been known to pull his shots. First clear shot Floyd can get he will take and off Bullseye. I just can't see Bullseye doing the same, he's a bit of a flake after all. Giving Floyd more opportunity to take said shot. Which he could make even if his marksmanship skills aren't quite at Bullseye's level.

At the end of the day. If I were to hire a hitman to kill someone (hypothetically here people) and the two choices were Bullseye or Deadshot. I'd hire Deadshot. You know why? Because he would leave little doubt in my mind that he would get it done as soon as he had the shot. Bullseye on the other hand doesn't do that. He plays about with his targets. Bullseye may be a better marksman but Deadshot is better at killing people. Bullseye is the weak link here. Not Catman.

Moving on, Punisher could not take Catman. Right maybe pre-Villains United he could but since then Catman's feats have been very impressive. The Cats In The Cradle arc from Secret Six alone has plenty of material that lend credence to view that Catman could take Frank. I can't believe that people are calling him the weak link in this battle. Catman has clearly demonstrated peak human speed/agility and has dodged bullets in firefights loads of times. I put it forth that Frank could not hit Catman with his guns. If he did, he would have dodged the worst of it and Catman's damage soak is immense. He could take it and still get into stabbing range.

If and when it came to H2H between Punisher & Catman. Catman would pwn him. No doubt about it. His fighting skills, speed, strength and stamina are way beyond Frank's. I would even say his damage soak is better as well, just. It's all in Villains United & Secret Six. Both series demonstrate feats of Catman's that give him some serious advantages over Punisher.

One final thing Deadshot & Catman would work better as team than Punisher & Bullseye. Even if they were fully cooperative with each other for the sake of this battle. As CM & DS were actually part of a team together and buddies to boot. They would work better as a 2 man team than old Frank & Lester.

Posted by frogjitsu

@hit_monkey: Catman may be able to dodge bullets but he's not as agile as Spider-man, and Punisher tagged Spidey (even though I believe that was PIS, I digress; it happened).

Hell no. You can't be serious. Tagged Spider-man? Cadence, please... Deadshot's capable of tagging Captain Boomerang 2. You know... The one that can move faster than Sound?

When Bullseye can replicate that, call me.

in the meantime, here's his armor

Deadshot >>>>> Bullseye.

Posted by mightyrearranger

Yeah, Floyd's survived a headshot via his armor before, that's how durable it is. Not sure how Bulls or Frank can take him. Additionally, the New 52 Floyd has gotten headshots by throwing scalpels from between his fingers/behind his hands...

Edited by Ace20XD6

Bullseye doesn't prefer guns like Deadshot so there's an advantage there for Lawton. Punisher may not be an expert marksman as well as Lawton but he still has a good aim and will definitely bring in bigger fire power, while Catman has his knives, claws, and magic cape. If Deadshot and Catman win it'll be like a Secret Six comic with them barely surviving. Also I can't see Punisher and Bullseye working together without trying to kill each other.

Edited by Mangakid1995

Deadshot doesn't play around or take shit, he goes straight for the kill shot. Deadshot > Bullseye

I'm assuming Bullseye is using guns and knives. If he is that gives him a slight edge because Floyd will run out of bullets and Lester can reuse throwing knives and use them up close, however Deadshot isn't too shabby with knives either so this can backfire on Lester.

Catman isn't someone you wanna fuck with just saying, in a straight up brawl with Punisher it's anyone's game.

Finally Deadshot and Catmans biggest advantage in this fight is that they are pals they have experience working together and they know how to play off of eachother. On the other side of this fight is Punksher and Bullseye. Bullseye is pretty much the epitome of everything Frank Castle hates, the fact that they are within arms length of eachother is astounding to me so you can forget about them working together. Having said that my vote definitely goes

To team Deadshot/Catman
