Comic Book Question of the Week: Why Do You Love Spider-Man?

There's a lot to like about Peter Parker, but which quality is the most appealing to you?

Unfortunately, true believers, this is Spider-Man's final week as the Character of the Month (click here to vote for the next character). We've asked you plenty about Spidey's world (favorite writer, villain, movie, etc), but now we're going to ask you a very simple question: why do you love Spider-Man? Might as well celebrate him during his final week, right? Do you love his ability to crack a joke even when his back is against the wall? Do you respect his drive? Do you admire his physicals and the way he web-slings above New York's streets? There's a few options on the poll, so give it a good amount of thought and then cast your vote!

Can't vote right away? Well, there's no need to worry because voting will remain open until Thursday morning (ET). After you select your choice on the poll, jump into the comments and get your elaboration on. Why'd that option earn your support? What does Spider-Man mean to you? Make your post full of enough awesomeness and there's a chance we'll highlight it in the updated feature!

Feel free to make future Question of the Week suggestions in the comments below or via Twitter! Want to continue celebrating Spidey? He's currently in the Batman Battle of the Month (go vote!!!) and we posted his Best Battles, Must Read Stories, and Best Covers. Don't forget to vote for the next Character of the Month, too!

There are a million reasons for any fan. For me it was Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut, The Final Chapter, and The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man. It was these stories that made me love the character.

Because no matter what the odds or how outmatched physically or mentally he never ever gives up. His heart and will are second too none. He is the definition and epitome of a true superhero. He doesn't care about fame, glory, money or power. He's lived up to "with great power comes great responsibility". Nuff said.

All of this^, plus...

  • The hero I most relate to
  • Badass and a Street-King whose metaphysical stats make him the superior of most other street-levelers, even other Street Kings.
  • The king of cool costumes. Seriously, I love almost all of his costumes.
  • Great supporting cast in addition to an awesome rogues' gallery
  • In terms of his origins, and the life he leads, much more realistic and relatable than many other superheroes. I actually consider Spider-Man to be more down to earth and relatable than Batman, or at least just as much.
  • Tragic and well-written origin story that has stood the test of time.

Yeah, long story short Spider-Man is my all-time favorite.

Love? No. Interest? Yep. Funny, great villians, responsible etc, but sometimes vary annoying and too righteous in some situation, Massacre is bright example.

He was always someone I could relate to. I watched his TV shows as a kid along with Batman and Superman, so that may have helped with my liking of them. I was bullied as a kid so the idea of a superhero that was also bullied, not only by classmates but ol' Flattop, made him appealing. Justice has always been an important theme in my life.

This right here.

Despite the fact there are far more powerful people that I like (Superman, Goku, Thanos,) Spider-Man's powers have always seemed sooo cool to me. Who doesn't want to stick to walls and "fly" on webs? Also, Spider-Sense doesn't hurt either. He shows that you can be super-powered (even super-powerful) without being a "god" (here's looking at you Thor).

I mean not second encounter, which i totally approve, but first, when puny Parker even stopped sniper from executing Massacre.
Result: dozens dead people including his (Parker) friend-doctor.

Honestly taking the idea of comics as morality tales I kind of see him as the best one. He does the right thing and gets absolutely nothing for it, but its the right thing to do. Matter of fact his personal life often suffers for helping others, he loses jobs, fails classes and can't manage relationships all to help other people, why its his responsibility because he has the power to do so. So its the idea that as someone who grew up financially strapped, bullied and ignored does not use his power to get back at the world, but instead continues to give till it hurts. We need people like that in the world.

Superman, ooooh I'm soooo torn up by the fact that the population loves me and when I'm not being adored and saving the world I get to be a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist with loving parents in Kansas. I guess I'm an outsider with less links to my past, but I have an awesome fortress in the south pole I can use to find out stuff about that.

Batman - ok my parents are dead, but when I'm not Batman (who also gets lots of ladies) I get to be a famous billionaire with a butler who also is lusted after by ladies.

I could go on, but the fact is Spidy takes more shit for doing the right thing than a lot of heroes. The Hulk is the only one I can think of that comes close and he sometimes is the cause of his own problems. Also Pete's not invulnerable so he also takes a beating for his efforts on top of everything else.

People like to say "I like Spider-man because he's relatable" well I feel like that's not nearly enough to make any character great. Although Spider-man is my favorite superhero I don't relate to guy, but what makes him great is that his back story is simple but well written, the things that motivate him like family, friends and the legit happiness of others, and last but not least he has an interesting personality he's smart, unselfish, hardworking, able to admit when he's wrong, he has a smart mouth and most importantly he's resilient. If you want to be a great superhero you have resilient and that's why I like Spiderman/Peter Parker.

he's not a god, nor a billionaire playboy therlanthropist, nor anything important. he's just some guy who had an accident during some field trip which gave him powers and has some normal everday life which makes it relatable.

he's one of those people you wished he was your best friend

he's one of the most humanistic characters out there.

he has one of the most impactful stories out there

there's so much you can do with the character

the way the character and his world is is like art with how he has to struggle his responsiblity and shows us how human he is

his interactions with the characters are spot-on whether or not he has a good time with them like wolverine, captain america, iron man, hawkeye, spider woman, etc.

the character has maturity. i can see what linkara was coming from but it's due to the problems wiuth the writers. the character acts mature but he isn't superman mature nor batman mature he's basically just a mature character like some human

his story with his parents could be boggled down to his dad being a cop who uses his sense of humor to maintain his sanity or feel confident and his mother could be some scientist or some biologist. both of which would match peter if they weren't agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.(i just noticed that i made a reference to that mediocre tv series).

He IMO is the most unique "Protagonist" in fiction, yes all of fiction. He never wins, sure he wins temporarily but he hits his stride to rock bottom when things seem to good to be true crashing his high expectations having a bittersweet conclusion, unlike any run of the mill heroes who become blessed and depicted as victors and idols like the gods of ancient myths, Spiderman is eternally Icarus and yet Jesus at the same time, a man who sticks it out for the fortune of others. He'd let dickstains like Hawkeye and Torch get all the credit and happiness for saving the day even if it meant he got nothing in return and is back to loserville. He lets Captain America outshine him in being the Marvel U's king of heroes despite the fact Spidey is the ultimate timeless iconic symbol of Marvel and thier greatest hero created in the real world on the pantheon of immortal heroes along side the Big Boyscout and the Caped Crusader. He should have made sexual conquests with more babes and pleasures from Marvel's most beautiful heroines and civilians yet he gets stuck with MJ and now the Midget Lois Lane.

Plus he's a funny and awesome dude who knows what we know about Marvel without being explicit with it like Deadpool, Marvel is his kingdom, he runs the show, he just lets everyone take the reigns because he's like Mickey Mouse, to famous and important to the company's image to do epic shit like save the universe, I always figured that Spider-Man was the secret one above all, and the heroes like Thor, Iron Man, Cyclops, Iceman etc are different versions and projections of himself that he makes up in his head that defines his entire concept of being the Superhero of Superheroes. And his life is simply put the universe itself, I mean look without Peter Parker, there would be no smart ass quippers coming out of Iron Man, Hawkeye, Johnny, Hellion, Rockslide, and most famously Deadpool.
