Comic Book Question of the Week RESULTS: Who's Your Favorite Robin?

Six Robins entered the poll. Only one is leaving as the winner. Which sidekick did the Comic Vine community declare as its favorite one? Come see which hero took the prize and why!

Batman sure loves to brood and do things by himself, but throughout the years, he's allowed a number of people to stand right by his side. When it comes to the mantle of Robin, there's six characters who usually to come to mind immediately: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Stephanie Brown, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne, and Carrie Kelley. Sure, there's other Robins from different universes and what not, but these six tend to be the most iconic. Each brings their own qualities to the table and are adored for completely different reasons, but this week, we wanted to see which one you like the most and why. Well, after two days of voting, the Comic Vine community has declared a winner. It looks like your fellow Viners think you just can't go wrong with the original. Congrats, Dick Grayson!

Dick
Dick "Sensational" Grayson!

It was a pretty close race, but in the end, the very first boy wonder earned 34% of the votes. Making his debut back in 1940 (DETECTIVE COMICS #38), Dick Grayson was originally described as "an exciting new figure whose gymnastic and athletic feats will astound you... a laughing, fighting, young daredevil who scoffs at danger like the legendary Robin Hood whose name and spirit he has adopted." Not only was Grayson the first Robin to fight side-by-side with the Caped Crusader for so many years, but he also evolved a great deal since putting on the yellow cape. He went on to lead the Teen Titans (as Robin), and, as you all of course know, eventually became Nightwing and even temporarily stepped into Batman's cowl. Let's see what one Viner has to say about Grayson.

Viner Post of the Week for Dick Grayson is by Alak

"Dick Grayson easily gets my vote. To me, he's had more character growth out of any of the robins which is due to the advantage of having the longest publication history. His role as a sidekick is underrated by a lot of readers because they only remember the cheesy puns, but he's actually had a lot of moments where he shined as the boy wonder. Let's also not forget that as Robin, he was a founder of the original Teen Titans, a team whose legacy continues to be very well-known today. As Nightwing, Dick proved that a sidekick was capable of breaking free from the shadows of his mentor. The guy was skilled enough to clean up his own city while continuing helping out in Gotham as well as helping out with the Titans/Justice League. Then there's the fact that he was the obvious choice for becoming Batman after Bruce died, and he did a good job at carrying the mantle even after the latter returned. Team Grayson FTW!"

Grayson may have snagged the top spot, but he was in relatively close race with Tim and Damian during the two day voting period. Initially, all three were tied and then Tim took the lead. However, more and more voters began to rally for the original Robin and he eventually flipped his way to victory. Sadly, Carrie and Stephanie were left in the dust while Jason received a moderate amount of love. Check out the poll figures below.

  • Dick Grayson 34%
  • Tim Drake 29%
  • Damian Wayne 22%
  • Jason Todd 11%
  • Stephanie Brown 2%
  • Carrie Kelley 2%

Man, I really loved the Bruce - Dick - Damian dynamic. Bruce takes in Dick and they become Batman and Robin but after Bruce "dies" Dick takes in Damian and they become the new Batman and Robin, but the roles are reversed, with a lighter Batman but a darker Robin, but they are basically the same age as when Bruce and Dick became Batman and Robin for the first time. It is such amazing symmetry between those three characters. I hate that the New 52 ruined it all. :(

I am just glad that Dick and Tim made the #1 and #2 spots. I love both of them equally and as long as those 2 Robins are in either of those spots, I am content.

I completely agree with this.

Dick is arguably the worst Robin. Yes he's a great character and yes Nightwing rocks but as Robin? No way.

Aside from Dick being a bad Robin, I agree with Jonny here. The reason why Dick became a great character was because Wolfman gave Dick his own identity and status away from Batman and The Bat Family. After becoming Nightwing, further writers and creators fleshed out Dick Grayson as a character and developed him into who he is today. His success has to do with his evolution as a character, not his beginnings as a Robin. The best Robin would probably have to be Tim or Damian based on character development or personality growth within the role.

As always, great post by L. Completely agree with this too.

And I can't help but think that most people who voted for Dick only voted for him because he was the first Robin and had the most character development (albeit it was after he was Robin) and haven't actually read many, or any, Dick Grayson Robin stories. But that's the cynicism in me.

A little surprised Jason didn't get more love but I agree with the vote, Dick Grayson was awesome as Robin. On a side note, was the annual featuring him as Robin any good? Saw it at the comic store and thought about it.

I think that Dick Grayson definitely started the role but it took Tim Drake to define it. Dick was more Batman's sidekick while Tim was more like his junior partner; not quite his equal but held in greater respect than he did to Dick--no offense to the original Robin, but I think Bats didn't know how to treat him as an equal at that point which caused their breakup as the Dynamic Duo. Bats had to have it his way or no way. By the time that Tim came along, Batman was more able to accept a more level partnership.

Damian is third for just sheer badassery and I think Carrie Kelly was fourth best.

Sadly, Jason and Steph were the worst Robins in my opinion.

I wonder how many of the people who voted for Dick only saw his Robin in cartoons/movies rather than reading them in the comics. In the comics, Dick's sugary 60's & 70's era Robin was pure cheese. Robin was a joke before Tim Drake. Dick is a great character post-Robin, but Tim made Robin cool. He had the brains and skill to be the true heir of Batman.

I understand the love for Tim modern era Tim was pretty amazing new 52 Tim has been pretty bad so far though could be why the votes didn't come up for him to edge out Dick. Dick is an Icon and to every one hating on his silver age run he was a product of his time and I would love a year one run of batman and robin with Dick and Bruce in the new 52 era I think exploring the beginnings of that relationship and it's fall out would be amazing and Kyle would be perfect to write it. Titans should be scraped and rebooted what they did with super boy and Tim has been Terrible.

Well I'm sure you'd have written something of better quality than I could have done. You're the bigger fan of Dick Grayson than I am even though he is in my top 10 favourite heroes. Thanks for the compliment mate, I appreciate it coming from a big Nightwing fan (Notice I didn't go for the obvious Dick joke :P)

The only reason Grayson tops this list, is nostalgia. His greatest adventures, character development, and such all came when he was night wing.

Tim is clearly the best robin, followed by Damien. Grayson may have created the role but Tim is the one who defined it. The oldest doesn't always mean the greatest.

No, I wouldn't say that Tim defined it. He just modernized it.

Aw, I wish I knew about this poll. Loved the Batman series. I was only familiar with the animated series. The only male Robin I haven't heard of is Damien until that new movie announcement this month. Haven't read much comic books. I never knew there were female Robins.

I dont think either Stephanie nor Carrie should count as Robins. To me, Robin=BatBOY/Lad. Same with Speedy=Boy-Arrow-Lad. A female sidekick to Batman is called Batgirl.

Also, Stephanie should never have been Robin nor Batgirl, just Spoiler. Like making Dick Batman, it just diminishes Nightwing. Putting Barbara back as Batgirl is a step back & diminishes Oracle. Having Charlotte be Batgirl first, then get rejected & create Misfit diminishes Misfit, especially since they also showed its possible she could become Huntress in the future. They even did that with Helena, they showed people feared & respected her more as Batgirl, then as Huntress.

DC needs to learn that swapping & sharing their costumes doesnt work. You cant put anyone else in as Batman, Superman or WW. I think part of why Flash & especially GL didnt quite make it to their level is because of one question, which one will they use?

Oracle, Spoiler, Misfit, Huntress, Katana, along with Starfire, Raven or Bluebird, anyone of them could be DC's second female character after WW. Instead, all but Raven play supporting role to the Bat-family, which needs no one new added to it. I mean, who is the #2 female after WW? Batgirl? Supergirl? Catwoman? All supporting characters. Black Canary? All she is is GA's girlfriend.

But rant aside, I'll Stephanie Brown, because she deserved more. Maybe the name spoiler isnt the best, but she could have just as easily been retconned into being a slightly older & founding member of the JL, just like Cyborg was. Instead DC shot themselves in the foot, because they have to leach off of Batman. Of Superman. Maybe WW. & thats why only Watchmen was good. Why Batman Begins was good. TDK&TDKR & MOS were mediocre. Why BVSwithWW will fail, why a JL movie will fail. The expectations for those characters can never be met in film. Marvel's movies didnt have that level of expection to meet. & really only Ironman has good films. Thor & cap are watchable at best.
