Comic Book Question of the Week Results: Scariest Marvel/DC Character

Happy Halloween! Why not celebrate by thinking about the characters from the Big Two would could make you run away screaming and crying if you ever bumped into them?

Halloween is upon is, so it's only fitting we take a moment to reflect on the most frightening characters in Marvel and DC, right? This week, we asked you which character would likely make you pee your pants or freak out if you ever bumped into them in a dark alley. Over 450 Viners voted and to no one's surprise, a certain pale villain took a very large majority. It looks like most Viners are afraid of clowns... or at least clowns who are mass murders with beyond twisted minds.

No Caption Provided

We're right there with you, Viners. Joker's a scary dude. If you bumped into him, there's simply no telling if it would be the last night of your life or if it would be one of the most horrific experiences you'll ever endure. There's just no telling what's going on in that mind of his. He may not be able to turn you to dust with eye beams or crush you with super-human strength, but he's can mess with your mind and has a disturbing amount of ways to hurt you on a physical level, too. It's a well-earned victory for the Clown Prince of Crime.

Viner Post of the Week for Joker is by IDontLikeBirds

"Joker for his unpredictability. The majority of the others, you can predict their usual behavior, even Carnage, who will more or less just kill you and maybe torture you a bit. Joker...well he will reeeeeally get in your head, just ask Jason Todd when he died. Making your mother betray you, then beating you nearly to death with a crowbar, and finally blowing you up, that is just twisted, and that was mainly to mess with Batman. The Killing Joke also is a good reason why I picked him."

Joker obliterated the competition, but Carnage and Scarecrow weren't too far behind. Check out the full poll results below. Again, 0% doesn't necessarily mean a character received zero votes. In fact, the only character who didn't earn a vote was Crossbones. Someone please give the terrible man a pat on the back. We obviously couldn't include nightmare inducing characters like Stilt-Man, Squirrel Girl or Vulture because that would just be unfair, you know?

Who'd you vote for and why, Viners? While you're at it, go ahead and recommend your favorite story arc for said character as well. That way it could potentially motivate your fellow Viners to check it out. Also, if you do dress up as one of these frightening characters for Halloween today, feel free to share an image in this article!

Check the homepage next Tuesday for an all-new Question of the Week! Do you have a suggestion for a topical or superb question for the feature? Post it below it tell Gregg via Twitter.

-_- Joker is too OP in these polls.

Once again, heavy support for Batman or Batman villians, can't believe Professor Pyg got 6% of the votes. Better yet there are at least 5 Bat related characters in the top 10 including Batman, something is way wrong here, lol. Nobody's scared of the Ghost Rider, Mephisto, Thanos , Sabretooth, or a guy with 42,000 plus kills , Frank Castle! What happened to the Spectre? Even heroes at Dc fear him at times!

All of those people may kill me very painfully.

They won't screw with my mind, torture me for pleasure, screw with my loved ones just for the sake of it....

Essentially, everyone else apart from Joker will leave me intact as I get ripped limb from limb...

being torn apart psychologically is scarier to me than physical damage.

Mephisto is like the Devil, You know Ghost Rider's Thing, Thanos???,Sabretooth ????, Frank Castle, 42,000 plus kills and you wouldn't wonder mentally what he may do to you, and the Spectre, and your telling me a guy dressed as a clown, would really disturb you! Wow !!!! I'm at a loss of words!

Surprise, another DC character wins again....

What is funny is that Cassidy/Carnage has the same mentality as Joker, maybe even more crazy because of the alien symbiotic bond, plus the added bonus of super powers

Is Joker scary? Yes

Is he the scariest? Not even close.

If Joker came into my house, I could easily defend myself. If Thanos came into my house, I'd be f**ked. Knowing I'd have no choice to defend myself, or loved ones, is scarier.

I always thought a character like Purple Man was very scary, a pschopath with mind control powers?! for DC I thought Dr Psycho was a terrifying as well. As you can tell I think the guys who can attack your mind from anywhere and anytime are more scarier then the 'scary' characters

Nah Carnage is creepier. Aside from his terrifying appearance,if you faced Joker you might actually get out alive but if Carnage decides to kill you you're dead. His similar mindset and the fact you can't escape him make him scarier.

I've thought about it. Cassandra Nova and Onslaught are pretty damn frightening. It's one thing to have the Joker kill your wife in front of you then disembowel you while you're still breathing - it's another to be put in a place with no walls, no sound and no hope of ever leaving.

There are different types of fear - and each is capable of inspiring a level unique to their own.

Joker and Carnage make sense for the top three. But I think Scarecrow and Parallax should be disqualified. Crane isn't inherently scary aside from the fact that he's a lunatic (like half the people in Gotham).

Parallax has other abilities things that make it scary. But there's one thing they share. They actually harness fear as the source of their power. Their main ability is to make you experience fear. That's cheating. If Jigglypuff's singing made you experience fear Jigglypuff wouldn't suddenly become scary.

Crossbones and punisher are scary because they're crazed killers. I would even accept Sinestro because he's just as likely to kill you even as a Green Lantern.

@wpr: Mindbomb is exactly why he's such a terrible villain. All it was is a mindless gorefest. Carnage is a fine example of why the 90s sucked for Marvel. And I see Wonderful Life is in the same decade as well. The only good storyarc with Carnage is Maximum Carnage and even that was longer than it should have been. Venom is the only symbiote needed but they had to make him an antihero.

Just briefly looking over the list, Professor Pyg actually really bothered me in his appearance in Arkham War... second only to Joker and in the neighborhood of James Jr. in terms of Gotham-related villains who unnerve me.

But some statements about other villains with whom I'm less familiar are definitely convincing. The Purple Man especially.

To me the scariest would be between King Shark & Killer Croc. I REALLY wouldn't want to be eatin alive! Also since you probably have more chance meeting Croc in an alley than a Shark, I'd vote Killer Croc as the scariest. Now if we are in the water, it'd be a tie because either one could be waiting to eat you.

Even if you guys aren't surprised, you've got to admit he's pretty scary and unpredictable.

He's more of twisted but, for me, what's scary is suspense.

I haven't read anything with Killer Croc but the experience I've had with him was in the Arkham Asylum video game and that always freaks me out.

Agreed.

@mezmero: I think the uncertainty is what makes most people fear the Joker. Fear of the unknown and all that. But pure malicious hatred? Sheesh. Yep, that is how I make sense of it. At least now you know nearly 1 in 4 on the vine is scared of clowns.

Joker is not that scary.

Zsasz, Darkseid, Carnage and Sabertooth are all scarier. Joker is just a dude. Three of those people have special abilities that make your death all that more unpleasant assuming they don't keep you alive to torment you. Even Zsasz is going to cut you to pieces which is scarier than the Joker who is a 160 lb clown.

I also don't believe the heroes belong here (Punisher, Bats, Rider, Logan) because their scariness is directed at villains.

I would think Dark Phoenix is scariest. If it wante to make me feel fear, it could mentally and physically torture me without straining itself, and then kill and revive me while torturing till it is satisfied. Not to mention it could probably materialize anything it would need instead of just being an illusion.

That's because you made an effort to miss my point.

Frank Castle has a sense of morals and justice. He doesn't torture people just for the hell of it.
Why should I be scared of anything more than simply dieing?

I'm not worth Thanos' time. He would probably just squish me like a bug...again, a straight up death.

What's the worst thing Mephisto has done to someone?

Joker screws with peoples minds, their bodies, and their loved ones. He breaks you, completely, physically and emotionally. As bad as the other bads are, I wouldn't say they do that.

@muyjingo: So by that logic, Shadow King should have won. I mean, he can LITERALLY get inside your mind. Plus he's a psionic demon. Shadow Thief = scarier than Joker.

However, I say that as a huuuuge Bats and Joker fan. He was terrifying in A Serious House.

Does shadow king pose a physical threat as well? Does he attack loved ones? Joker has driven entire cities mad with fear....has shadow king done anything on that scale?

I still think the best part of Death of the Family was Batman#13 where the Joker attacks the police department and you can see the exact moment where the Commissioner saw who it was and immediately sh!t his pants

Well, he can possess your loved ones...and then make them kill or torture your other loved ones. He has telepathic/psionic abilities that are dead even in range and scope to Professor X. So yeah, I'd say he could be a city-level threat, at the very least.

But I was also being somewhat tongue-in-cheek with my post.

Besides, everyone knows the scariest guy in comics is this dude:

Heeeyyllllsshhh yesh tha Joker..Scarier than all of them.. so unpredictable..and so unafraid of death or any kind of pain.. a complete lunatic. Not really surprising to me but hes my favorite villain..who needs powers to cause fear? No one, and while i agree Scarecrow is pretty scary, Joker does it without the help of gas and is INSANE...Love him and his sadistic twisted mind

Yeah, I can see why Joker won. It wasn't really much of a surprise. Still, it was well-earned and it was nice to see the other villians that were voted to make you crap your pants. Carnage is terrifying.
