Comic Book Question of the Week Results: Most Promising New Series

Was the winner obvious or did a superb title not from the big two take the victory?

This week, we wanted to know what your favorite brand new series is and figure out why you think it rises above the competition. We did our best to get a fair amount of representation from various publishers and had a whopping 29 options on the poll (including "other"). After two days of voting, the Man of Steel swooped past the rest of the books and SUPERMAN UNCHAINED soaked in 26% of the votes.

No Caption Provided

A book by DC's incredibly talented Scott Snyder and Jim Lee earned the most votes? This poll was clearly rigged! It's no real surprise this promising book took the victory, but it was slightly disappointing the see the votes weren't more evenly distributed. More than a good chunk of these titles are indeed quite stellar and worth checking out, so if you're looking for something new, definitely start researching the titles on this poll (results are provided below).

Also, a book having 0% doesn't necessarily mean the title received 0 votes. For example, I know for a fact REGULAR SHOW had 1% at one point in the poll.

  • Superman Unchained 26%
  • Batman/Superman 19%
  • X-Men 8%
  • The Wake 7%
  • East of West 6%
  • Avengers A.I. 3%
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man 3%
  • Other (Specify below) 3%
  • Harbinger Wars 2%
  • Kick-Ass 3 2%
  • Quantum and Woody 2%
  • Jupiter's Legacy 2%
  • Larfleeze 2%
  • Ten Grand 2%
  • The Movement 2%
  • TMNT New Animated Adventures 2%
  • 100 Bullets: Brother Lono 1%
  • Astro City 1%
  • Batman '66 1%
  • Satellite Sam 1%
  • Thanos Rising 1%
  • The Black Bat 1%
  • 12 Reasons to Die 0%
  • Chin Music 0%
  • Dexter 0%
  • Liberator 0%
  • Regular Show 0%
  • The Green Team 0%
  • The Owl 0%

Which book won your vote and why? Be sure to give the comments section a piece of your mind.

Just a heads up, there likely won't be a CB Question of the Week next Tuesday/Thursday due to San Diego Comic-Con.

Superman/Batman, because of Greg Pak and especially Jay Lee.

No, I don't follow that series or the show. I know because I watched the poll as it progressed since Tuesday.

Superman Unchained, simply because of both the writer and artist on this series, as well as the fact this title won't be affected, hopefully, by any crossover events. It's my rare opportunity to read about Superman without the constant need to read other titles from time to time to get a basic understanding of what is going on.

The first two issues of Unchained have been great! No surprise it's a lot of people's most promising new series.

@inferiorego: I didn't like the first issue that much. I haven't read the second yet. I felt the whole useing Nagasaki in a story was inappropriate.

Will I need to have any prior Superman knowledge to get into Unchained, or is it pretty new reader-friendly?

I chose Superman Unchained. The main reason is Superman is one of my favorite characters and his stories have been lacking, to be honest. It's great to have a superstar team who has produced 2 stellar issues and I'm sure they'll continue. They haven't been without faults, but they were both great. Batman/Superman was a close second with me. The Wake, X-Men, and TMNT Animated Adventures also have much promise in my eyes.

I must be the only one pleased that Unchained won. Even though loads of Indy books have plenty of potential, Unchained is really shaping up to be a good series IMO.

But Unchained just isn't THAT good. Defo East Of West or Jupiters Legacy, they're actually doing something interesting.

Maybe it isn't. But I liked it a lot more than any issue of Superman since the N52, and liked it better than most of Action Comics post N52 as well. This is coming form someone who generally has a strong dislike for Snyder.

The first issue had the right amount of action, and captured the essence of not only Superman and Clark pretty much perfectly, but also his world and the people around him. At least imo.

I don't really get why people think Jupiter's Legacy is "something new". It's plot points from Kingdom Come mixed with a little bit of the Authority.

Oh look, a bunch of Marvel and DC titles got the most votes.

I wouldn't have voted Unchained unless the quality of the series wasn't good. Please don't imply that all DC and Marvel fans are slaves to the company when most just want good stories being told and the ones with the most votes on here deliver in that regard.

I voted for Harbinger Wars. It's 75% through but it is fantastic. The most promising book to me though is Eternal Warrior which will be released this fall by Valiant.

. . . or Winter Soldier when/if it is re-introduced to the Marvel line-up.

Ha ha, really? I read DC and Marvel too, guys. I'm not hating on them. I just think it's funny whenever we anoint something from a Big 2 publisher "best" when 80% of the readership likely doesn't read anything outside of that.

No you are correct, I can EASILY name better titles on that list.
but you gotta remember most people here are mainstream readers..not saying im a hipster I also read Superman Unchained and don't find it better than Batman. or even Nightwing lol
Seriously I find Nightwing and Flash better than Superman Unchained, despite it's first two issues it's nothing mind blowing.
Yes Superman Unchained has major potential but most people voted because it is a popular character AND it's written by mainstream writers well known such as Jim Lee, and as you know Jim lee will probbaly leave after like the 10th or 12th issue and Snyder will stay on for awhile, but also if an event should come up he won't have alot of focus on Superman unchained if he is working with other writers in the batman department. As you can see the 2nd most votes was Batman/Superman which was a 7/10 title at best and yet people voted it as a potential title that shows alot of promise. *sigh.
lol But it's what people voted..I know deep down they are wrong that is my opinion.
Plus the title i voted wasn't even on the list lmao
im not taking a whole lot out of Superman: unchained the writing and art are great, but the story in two issues hasn't got me hooked. it's not like a fresh take on Superman, I guess Superman just really isn't Snyder's kind of character.

I voted 'other' because Lazarus wasn't on the list. Lazarus is clearly the title with the most potential and not to mention he has almost full creative control over it and he is going to tell the story over a long period of time. So nobody would have to worry about someone else taking over(unless he hand chose someone to)

0% = negligent quantity

I'm certain there were at least some votes for those titles.

Honestly I could assume that by looking at who's writing and who's drawing.

Snyder might be getting rave reviews for the issues he's written, and I agree that he does a fabulous job of building up excitement... but the sad truth is that both Court of Owls and DotF ended with almost nothing. Talons started showing up left and right, true, but nothing else seems to have happened, and DotF was completely eclipsed by Batman Inc. though on it's own it ended with just about nothing changed except a demolished circus.

And then there's Lee... sorry, but for me the man just sets the middleground benchmark in DC; they have poorer artists and they have much better artists with him in the middle being neither one or the other.

@theshutup: I voted for Batman/Superman because I thought it showed not the most promise. I checked out most of the other titles, and I didn't think they showed as much promise. This isn't about which story is better, but the books with the most potential.

Out of that list, I really do think those 2 DC books were among the highest quality, more so than all the little indie books that everyone wants to think are better than they are.

The books are from one of the biggest publishers with the most exposed characters, but that doesn't indicate anything about the quality or potential of the books.

Judging a book simply because it has big names attached is as bad as what you assume everyone is doing, simply voting for books that have big names attached.
