Comic Book Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Spider-Man Villain

Come see which bad guy earned the top spot!

Peter Parker has a rogues gallery that's loaded with crazy and memorable villains. Whether it's challenging Spider-Man with raw might or intellect, these foes have each earned their place in Spidey's history. This week, we wanted to see which villain the Comic Vine crowd appreciates the most. Almost 400 Viners voted and, well, we don't think too many people will be surprised by the result. Venom (Eddie Brock) wins with 25% of the votes!

Spoiler: it's not their final confrontation. But it is awesome.

Eddie's currently Toxin and was Anti-Venom prior to that, but there's no denying the fact he was an absolutely iconic Venom. During his time with the symbiote, Brock served as a twisted reflection of Peter. Eddie believed he was the good guy and wanted to save others from the terrible, terrible Spider-Man. This twisted mentality lead to quite a few legendary clashes with the wall-crawler and, given the symbiote's abilities, he's a very big physical obstacle for Spidey. Then there's the simple fact that his appearance is just so cool -- his looks alone likely caught the attention of many. So, it really shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Venom earned the #1 spot and something tells us you won't be too shocked (no, that's not a Herman Schultz pun) by second and third place.

"Venom by a mile. Sorry Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Mysterio, I love you guys but Brock's Venom wins in my eyes. What makes Eddie Brock as Venom such a compelling character is not the fact that he just looks like he could deal open a can of woop-a$$in, or is just plain cool to look at. Nay, it is the fact he is a sympathetic villain. He doesn't have delusions of grandeur or wants to make a quick buck. He only became Venom because he felt that Spider-Man AND Peter Parker had wronged him from the point of where he couldn't climb back out of the hole that he was put in. That thirst for retribution, while insanely overdramatic, made the reader feel for Eddie Brock. You could see why he saw himself as the hero and Spidey as the villain. He valued human life, something that other villains in Spidey's rouge gallery lacked. He had a moral compass, which showed when push came to shove he could play the good guy. He was more than a simple "mustache twirling" bad guy, he was a complex and sympathetic anti-hero. One with a horrific yet (down-right) cool appearance that oozed appeal to young boys my age when I got into superheroes. I came for the cool appearance, and now I stay for the character."

Viner Post for Green Goblin is by Jayso4201

"There is most certainly no shortage of great villains for Spidey, Doc Ock, Venom, Carnage, Kaine, Jackal, Hobgoblin (both). All greats. I based my vote on who was truly the greatest villain as it relates to Peter/Spider-Man. No one else has had the impact on Parker's life that Norman has. Not even close. He is truly a horrible person and Spider-Man's greatest villain."

To celebrate Eddie Brock's victory, go ahead and share your favorite image of him below. See you next Tuesday for an all-new Question of the Week!

Wow, I'm surprised. Thought Goblin would have this in spades. Huh... guess Venom's popularity has yet to falter.

Posted by cmaprice

I think it was an absolute mistake to make Brock Toxin. Anti-Venom was conceptually interesting. Making Brock a knock-off symbiote is just kind of sad.

Posted by butters911

My favorites are the Chameleon and Mysterio. I love how they have been teaming up lately (before Mysterio was locked up in the ultimate universe).

Posted by Darkseid_Prime

Eddie Brock's Venom was a BAMF, he had everything but high intelligence

Posted by unlondun14

Voted shocker and am surprised he didn't make it higher, he was quite high when I voted (to the best of my memory).

Posted by GraniteSoldier

I'm not surprised, although I voted Green Goblin. My big three Spidey villains, personally, are Norman, Venom, and Lizard but Peter has no shortage of greats. Doc Ock, Mysterious, Morlun, Kraven, hell even Scorpion, Carnage and Electro. The man has some of, arguably the best, rogues in comicdom.

Posted by Bezza

Wow, Venom beats Green Goblin. Bit of a surprise and why no love for the Sandman, one of the original Sinister six?!

However, this poll supports what I have been saying to my daughters lately, which is that Spiderman, not Batman has the best villains roster!!

Edited by saoakden

I'm surprised. Venom is one of my favorite villains. The Spidey villains I like are Venom, Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Kraven is starting to grow on me, I'm starting to like Hobgoblin, Carnage, & I think Lizard is starting to grow on me.

Posted by Fallschirmjager

not really surprised that Venom is the popular favorite. GG is still his greatest enemy though (I voted for Kraven anyway)

Poor Vulture :(

I know right? He's lower than Boomerang.

@k4tzm4n: okay, I am on here all the time though, It's just weird I overlooked it.

I don't even remember if I voted in this or not. Seems like a poll that's been done before. I just know that if I did I would always go with Green Goblin.

Daaaaamn Gobby deserved 1st place! Venom's cool but has too much of an inconsistent portrayal for me. That and how Norman is such a threat... even when he was "dead" his ghost haunted Peter and his loved ones. I was really hoping for him to re-discover Peter's identity at the end of SSM though, he lacks some edge without that knowledge.

Come to think about it, a Goblin vs. Venom showdown would be a cool thing to read...

My top two made the top two! But in the wrong order.

Shocker higher on the list than Electro is a shock. >.>

Poor Hydro-Man. Left on the Bench again.

Spider-Man villain gallery the best in comics!!

For God's sake.......this is ridiculous.

Bomerang's popularity has risen due to Superior Foes.

Posted by IDontLikeBirds

Should have been Green Goblin (Norman Osborn). Just anything with him and Gwen Stacy is enough proof that he's been the biggest villain to Spider-man and Peter Parker.

Posted by Thatlyn Yoaeg'ill'rymmin

Well... Kraven The Hunter [my choice] fourth, after the "big bad" of Spiderman? Okkey, not so bad result :)

Posted by BeaconofStrength

Should have been Boomerang. Easily the best Spiderman villain now ;)

Posted by spidermonkey2099

Surprised that Mysterio scored higher than Kingpin...

Posted by AmazingWebHead

Good for Venom.

Edited by Cypher4

Aww, I never saw the question. I would have voted for Goblin, but I don't think it would made the difference, unless very few voted. Surprised Vulture got 0. Not like he's obscure that only die-hard Spidey fans would know like some of the other villains that got 0.

Posted by spideyKK

Glad Venom scored highest, it was a close poll though, didn't know Mysterio would get so many votes

Posted by Veedot85

Carnage is way to high

Posted by RustyRoy

Voted Doc Ock

Posted by Imagine_Man15

I'm a bit surprised there wasn't any love for the Vulture. I mean, obviously he wasn't going to win, but I expected him to have a couple of votes at least

Posted by VenomousTaco

VENOM FTW!!!

Posted by InfoMassive

This sums up my feeling toward Venom/Eddie Brock pretty much perfectly! This is way I jumped on the bandwagon of hating Spider-Man 3! Among it's many plot holes and problems the final insult was Venom being portrayed as just another top hat wearing baddies with a chip on his should for Spidey simply because he couldn't bring himself to take some of the blame! Argh!!!

Shocker

Well if I had known this poll existed I would have voted for Green Goblin (Norman). To me he and Joker are the epitome of what the perfect villain is supposed to be in that they are so obsessed with making their enemies suffer that Batman and Spiderman both fear what could possibly happen on the occasions they face them. Also villains like Green Goblin and the Joker are such a rare breed because villains who want wealth, or to rule the world are so common place that it has become boring. I find villains that are so consumed with causing suffering for their enemies, or to people in general like Green Goblin, Joker, and Carnage are the more interesting villains to read.

Posted by RazzaTazz

@vandinejd_1991: Well said, Green Goblin would be my choice as well, though I state it as a Spider outsider. I have probably read fewer than 10 Spider-Man comics in my life.

This may be blasphemous to say but I think Spider-mans villains are kinda weak.

Posted by averywetfrog

i wish it was a vote where you rank top 3 or 5, that would get a more accurate assessment of who peoples favorite is. i didnt vote for GG but i like him way more than venom, hes not even in my top 10

Posted by The_Titan_Lord

Nice.

Posted by Lykida

this is not a surprise I guess. My choice, Kraven, made it to rank 4 at least. But no love for the Spot or Vulture? That makes me sad.

But Venom does the same, doesn't he? His motivations are completely personal, he is not interestd in power or wealth and Spider-Man fears him, because he's different from other opponents. His Spider-Sense doesn't work when Venom's around and he knows his secret identity. The symbiote and Brock both want revenge.

In fact I think a lot of Spidey's villains have personal reasons... It's part of what makes them so special for me.

venom from the 90s cartoon was beyond epic

Posted by Jayso4201

Hey I got a mention, its a first!

Still think Norman is the one...

Edited by ScarletBatman

Spider-Man, Batman, the Flash and the Fantastic Four have the best rogues galleries in Comicdom.

I think Spider-Man's best villains are the Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus but my favorite has to be Venom. He's just so cool and tortured. He's not strictly a bad guy but he isn't strictly a good guy either. He's just very compelling.
