Comic Book Question of the Week Results: Favorite DC Villain

Who did the Comic Vine community pick as their favorite DC villain? Spoiler alert: it's not Condiment King!

When it comes to the DC universe, we've been swimming in a sea of sinister villains for the past month. Villains Month has come to an end, but the bad people in DC are still running the show thanks to the publisher's latest big event, FOREVER EVIL. Because of this, we thought it would be fitting to ask you who your top foe is over in their world. Well, it turns out the race wasn't close... like, at all.

One character absolutely slaughtered the rest and no one even came close to giving the character some competition... not even the mighty Darkseid. So, who could possibly earn such a vast majority when there's so much diabolical competition? The Joker, of course! Go ahead, try and act like you're surprised.

"THEY'RE my competition? HA!"

The Clown Prince of Crime first appeared way back in 1940 (BATMAN #1) and has since become absurdly popular (as proven in the poll results). The murderer is the focus of several great comics (e.g. THE KILLING JOKE, ARKHAM ASYLUM, DEATH OF THE FAMILY) and brilliant portrayals in the media have only boosted the villain's fanbase (e.g. Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger). We're not shocked Joker won, but we are somewhat surprised by the massive lead he took. Here's the full poll results.

Did you vote for Joker and, if so, why is he the best villain DC has to offer? Or, do you disagree with the result and think another character deserved the victory? Lastly, when we asked who the community's favorite Marvel villain is, Doctor Doom narrowly defeated Magneto in the poll. So, that brings us to the real question: Joker or Doctor Doom?

@iceslick: hey dude, there is quite afew of us that like ann's work and hold her catwoman as one of the best at dc. So before you go trying to discredit her just keep that in mind. As a matter of fact, her catwoman has been at a consistantly stong position in the past monthly retail sales figure which is why she has been the longest writer for that series 13-25 plus the annual and still counting.

@evilvegeta74: I think to label the Joker as " just a street level psychotic clown" is kind of an ignorant statement.....

If I can just quote Ramma here:

"The Joker

  • Is a clown
  • has one of them squirty flowers
  • may own more than one pair of clown shoes
  • may or may not be an ass clown

but for reals though.

Okay.. joker may know some unarmed combat. And may be able to use a knife and a gun."

Though keep in mind that this is a quote used from a random encounter VS fight.

Given prep, Joker, as time has shown, has been known to do some actual damage. But because he stays in Gotham. If he were to try to pull something like this around Superman or Wonder Woman, especially in the New 52, he wouldn't stand a chance. There are plenty of other deserving villains that have proven to be contenders against stronger heroes than Batman.

I don't care about the results, but I'll say the same thing I said about the Marvel one -- do a part-p2 with only the top characters available, so that the winner will have more than 50% of the total votes. This poll is reflective of next to nothing.

@lifeboy: I honestly think the only reason why the book is able to keep up with the sales is because Catwoman is a popular character. Hey there's even been times where Wolverine or Batman would last forever even despite it having a bad writer. I always known that in comics community people favor character > writer. It's why great books like Moon Knight, Demon Knights, War Machine (Iron Man 2.0), X-23, Daken, Runaways, Venom and Scarlet Spider can barely hold on in this industry. People are loved blindy by the characters that are considered popular rather than the actual writing. And by they way, this is my opinion. I'm not saying this is right or wrong. So, maybe you shouldn't throw a personal attack on me.

OK so I think I either voted Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, or Captain Cold. I think. I am kind of mad because Joker won, but mainly because I wanted to see someone different and it was kinda predictable. However I do love the Joker. The Batman comics with him in it are usually always a fun read.

Joker is the most iconic supervillain of all time...even non-comic book people know of him. Hands down, Joker takes title of most popular of all time over Doom.

It's sort of ironic that the result of this poll is predictable and boring when the Joker himself is the opposite of that. I might have voted for Joker over a decade ago but I chose Lex since he wages a far more interesting battle of morality and legality against Supes.

Wow, Luthor only 7% and under Deathstroke and Darkseid? That was a surprise. I thought the frist three will be Joker, Sinestro and Luthor, but Darkseid? sure he's powerful but Luthor and Sinestro are way better villains than him.

And Deathstroke??? ARE YOU F**KING KIDDING ME? No, seriously, I need someone who voted for Deathstroke to tell me why he/she did it. It's like voting Deadpool for "Marvel's best hero".

Well, that was about as big a surprise as the sun rising.

@k4tzm4n considering it was the end of villains month, wouldn't it have been more appropritate to ask which single issue was the best? (the answer should be more unpredictable :) )

Sure. Care to turn back time so I can do that?

@kaiklown: Yeah, because Joker is such a badly written character that only people who have no idea about comics would vote for him.

I voted Joker and I collect comics for more than 20 years.

Man, guys like you are the reason we comic geeks have such a bad rep. Elitist crap.

Um no,sure they've become awesome in the last 10 years or so,but Darkseid has been a better villain far longer, granted he's been badly misused.

Plenty of people love Deathstroke, unlike Deadpool Slade has done things that mak him a serious contender for the upper echelons of villainy, same cant be said for Deadpool.

Not suprising! The Vine is Dc heavy, it's also Bat-Fan heavy ! Of course the Joker would be voted top tier villain. Batman and anything related receives heavy support here, go check the stats. Case and example, I find it highly unlikely that a comic should receive 5 star ratings constantly. I 've seen it happen with Batman related books, no disrespect! It would seem that if you say or go against anything Batman, you become the enemy here. I think it's time to be real here, at the end of the day the Joker is just a street level psychotic clown used as a continuous plot device in Batman's book's for decades. Again no disrespect to the character, is he really popular or are we just used to him? With all the twisted acts he's performed in the DC verse it's astonishing that he's still alive. I've said this before he'd wouldn't last in the MU. Now not taking away his accomplishment's, I respect that, but I like villians who become more of global or universal threat. It doesn't hurt if the villain has super powers either. I chose Darkseid, but I guess the better clown won, no disrespect to the Joker.

So just cause the Joker has no powers and is a street level character it means he should not be a contender? sorry not buying it,would you say Hannibal is a lousy villain? the Joker despite being overexposed and overused still has some of the greatest stories ever written in comics,TV and movies THAT'S why people voted for him,the character is also always evolving, unlike many others.

Great point! Great point. Oh, Riddle me this how do you get 10 Batman rogues but no Mongul on the villain list?

Mongul hasn't been a decent villain since the day DC decided to get rid of his father and replace him with a son who was for all intents and purposes a facsimile of the father. Why exactly do you think he deserves a place on this list? Because he has superpowers?

Given prep, Joker, as time has shown, has been known to do some actual damage. But because he stays in Gotham. If he were to try to pull something like this around Superman or Wonder Woman, especially in the New 52, he wouldn't stand a chance. There are plenty of other deserving villains that have proven to be contenders against stronger heroes than Batman.

So the quality of a villain is determined not by the stories they headline, but by their ability to punch stuff and exhibit superpowers? Really?
