Comic Book Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Comic Book Movie Reboot

Did 'Man of Steel' murder the competition or was another reboot able to rise above and snag a majority of the votes? Come see which movie won and why!

This year, all-new versions of RoboCop (which we reviewed and that can be found here), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles AND Godzilla are returning to theaters and, beyond that, even more franchises will receive reboots. Some do a tremendous job revitalizing these classic stories, others... not so much. However, this week, we wanted to look back on the history of comic book reboots, not forward. We added 10 to the list (again, Transformers is there because the animated movie was a big deal) and since the poll was created on Tuesday, almost 400 Viners voted. In the end, only half of the poll's options received a good amount of love from the community, but only one of the movies took a clear lead: Batman Begins (insert Hans Zimmer music here).

While 1989's Batman does hold up, the franchise eventually went off the deep end. In 2005, director Christopher Nolan was able to successfully bring Bruce Wayne back for a whole new age. With a solid cast (Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman) and creating a mythos the general audience likely hasn't seen before (Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows), Batman Begins was a terrific start to what is widely praised as one of the best comic book movie trilogies. One Comic Viner, kennybaese, explains why they wanted to vote for Dredd, but instead gave the nod to Batman Begins.

"I adore Dredd, but I don't think it's going to launch a franchise. This makes it more of a remake than a reboot in my opinion.

Batman Begins, on the other hand, was pretty incredible, especially given how far the Batman movie franchise had fallen. Coincidentally, I re-watched all three movies over the weekend, and while there are some over all tonal inconsistencies, the trilogy as a whole is a cohesive, epic, and moving story about what the Batman is. Batman Begins started that, with a balance of the dark, gothic look and comic book tone of the Tim Burton movies with the hyper-realistic cityscapes realistic(ish) terrorist drama that dominated the other two movies.

Batman Begins made Batman relevant again in a way he wouldn't have been without it, and set the stage for The Dark Knight's demand that comic book film be taken seriously and not dismissed entirely as popcorn entertainment. For that alone it gets my vote."

Here's the poll results. Dredd's in second place? You rock, Comic Viners.

Did you vote for Batman Begins or did another movie earn your support? Also, are there any upcoming reboots that have you really hyped? Get your conversation on, Viners! Also, don't forget to check the homepage next Tuesday for an all-new Comic Book Question of the Week. Seriously, you better be there!

I agree with the top 3, but I have a different order. Here's my rank!

1. Batman Begins

2. Man of Steel

3. Dredd

4. Incredible Hulk

I did not like the other ones.

Yes - I voted for Dredd! I absolutely love that movie! If I could've picked a second it would've been Man of Steel, then Batman Begins, followed by the Amazing Spider-Man.

  1. Amazing Spider-Man
  2. Batman

Just my personal opinion. Dredd was decent overall.

Godzilla will dominate all once he hits the theaters.

Nolan is the only filmmaker on this list I have any respect for. Well, Joe Johnston for making The Rocketeer, but Zack Snyder and Michael Bay are hacks and whatever committee assembled the Amazing Spider-Man did so by creating one of the most schizophrenic and lifeless cinematic adaptations I've ever had the misfortune to sit through.

Dredd is good. Works great as a one-off piece. I wish it could launch a franchise but I doubt audiences have any desire for that kind of film anymore. Everything has to be PG-13 and gritty and real, and Dredd is R and fantastical and satirical.

Wow, Batman won, what a surprise.

At least Superman was loved enough to get the bronze. That's still on the winners platform, right? There's always 3 spaces.

Man of Steel got my vote, but I understand why BB won. I also completely agree with kennybaese in that we can thank BB for getting people to see CBMs (like Avengers, Dredd, and Man of Steel) as truly good movies and not just a bunch of weird guys doing dumb stuff. I'm sure some would argue that Spider-Man 1 and 2 got people to see CBMs as quality films, though.

@masterbelmont: I'm one of the some who would say xmen, Spider-Man 1 and 2 kicked started the big budgeted CMB films from the late 90s to the present. Ever since xmen film, a CMB film has followed every year almost.

I do agree that Batman Begins expanded the CMB genre to a broader and some would say a more sophisticated audience(whatever).

The Avenger film while great and tremendously fun. That was just great marketing. To build up anticipation over a spand of five films. That all stood on their own as solid and entertainig films. Then finally putting all the high caliber actors into one film with that much action, story, and special effects. You got the cinema gold called Avengers. The best anticipation for a film I had since the phantom menace after the original star wars trilogy.

Still, some might say the films I mentioned wouldn't be possible without the Tim Burton Batman film which was really big in the late 80s and the original superman films with Christopher Reeves. Zod was awesome in those films. It's all subjective.

@myerlanski:Pretty much this. I'd say SM1 made CBMs a thing due to its big success and the fact that it was a true Spider-Man film (both of which are opposite for X-Men).

My favorites would be:

1. Batman & Robin (Schumacher is a geniuuuuus)

2. Catwoman (I mean come on, evil make-up, who doesn't love that)

3. Superman Returns (Best Lex Luther ever, am I right?)

4. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (This thing is like the holy grail, so good it should be kept from any human eyes)
