Comic Book Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Comic Book Movie Reboot

Did 'Man of Steel' murder the competition or was another reboot able to rise above and snag a majority of the votes? Come see which movie won and why!

This year, all-new versions of RoboCop (which we reviewed and that can be found here), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles AND Godzilla are returning to theaters and, beyond that, even more franchises will receive reboots. Some do a tremendous job revitalizing these classic stories, others... not so much. However, this week, we wanted to look back on the history of comic book reboots, not forward. We added 10 to the list (again, Transformers is there because the animated movie was a big deal) and since the poll was created on Tuesday, almost 400 Viners voted. In the end, only half of the poll's options received a good amount of love from the community, but only one of the movies took a clear lead: Batman Begins (insert Hans Zimmer music here).

No Caption Provided

While 1989's Batman does hold up, the franchise eventually went off the deep end. In 2005, director Christopher Nolan was able to successfully bring Bruce Wayne back for a whole new age. With a solid cast (Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman) and creating a mythos the general audience likely hasn't seen before (Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows), Batman Begins was a terrific start to what is widely praised as one of the best comic book movie trilogies. One Comic Viner, kennybaese, explains why they wanted to vote for Dredd, but instead gave the nod to Batman Begins.

"I adore Dredd, but I don't think it's going to launch a franchise. This makes it more of a remake than a reboot in my opinion.

Batman Begins, on the other hand, was pretty incredible, especially given how far the Batman movie franchise had fallen. Coincidentally, I re-watched all three movies over the weekend, and while there are some over all tonal inconsistencies, the trilogy as a whole is a cohesive, epic, and moving story about what the Batman is. Batman Begins started that, with a balance of the dark, gothic look and comic book tone of the Tim Burton movies with the hyper-realistic cityscapes realistic(ish) terrorist drama that dominated the other two movies.

Batman Begins made Batman relevant again in a way he wouldn't have been without it, and set the stage for The Dark Knight's demand that comic book film be taken seriously and not dismissed entirely as popcorn entertainment. For that alone it gets my vote."

Here's the poll results. Dredd's in second place? You rock, Comic Viners.

Did you vote for Batman Begins or did another movie earn your support? Also, are there any upcoming reboots that have you really hyped? Get your conversation on, Viners! Also, don't forget to check the homepage next Tuesday for an all-new Comic Book Question of the Week. Seriously, you better be there!

I thought Dredd was horrendous...

I thoroughly enjoyed CA: TFA, BB, MoS, and ASM though. I went with Cap.

I voted for MoS, and Dredd definitely deserves 2nd place!

Batman Begins was pretty awesome, my favorite part of the movie was when Bruce was training with the League.

I like the first two batman movies but i think they are a little overrated just because its Batman. Dredd is my pick. Its one of the best action movies i've seen and definitely best of this selection.

I'll never forget, just sitting in the movie theater, and watching a young Bruce Wayne, training to become The Batman. The Prison scene was so badass, but once they were forty five minutes in, and it was still following a fairly linear timeline, I was thinking "I can't believe, they are getting away with this, in a Hollywood film!" I mean, it was a Batman origin story! I really don't think people remember just how fresh and exciting that was.

Batman Begins deserves to win. Dredd has very mixed reviews either being amazing or being absolutly horrendous. Batman Begins has a great cast, great script, is a great origin movie, and it came out at a time before the social media wouldnt tear it apart before its release.

I don't think superhero movies would be where they are today if Batman Begins hadn't come along. It's the most cohesive superhero movie series ever and possibly the most well thought out. I know that's like a big red beacon for Anti-Nolan trolls though-"Wah, I wanted a cartoon kid sidekick" or "Wah, I can't possibly like this AND Tim Burton's movies" or "Waaah, where are all the goofy gadgets?" or "Waaah, Bane wasn't tall enough". But really, those movies were BOSS.

Batman Begins deserves the top spot. It's a true reboot whereas something like MoS is a remake of the first Donner movies.

Hey, they pulled my comment!

Also, Batman Begins came out on my birthday (just noticed that on the poster), so I might be a smidgen biased. Then again, so did Green Lantern, so I'm 1 for 2.

Batman definitely should be # 1 here, but am surprised that Dredd beat MOS. IMO Dredd was very good and FAR better then Stallone's version but no way in hell better then MOS.

Well if we are basing it off how the film refreshed a franchised...I feel Captain America had the biggest improvement. The 90s film was a total disaster.

Also @k4tzm4n You really should pull a bait and switch with the graphics on the front page so it's a surprise.

Dredd kinda sucked tbh

Batman Begins and the rest of the trilogy is cinematic gold. Something that MoS and the rest of DC flicks will fail at bringing in the near future

I hope that if Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America 3 are well-liked by fans that this series will get as much love if not more than Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy.

Batman Begins deserved this win because it was good film overall and not just another comic book film. I am happy to see Dredd in second and while I'm not a fan MOS it's good to see that people voted for it.

Unsurprising. Begins was a great reboot. Though I'd disagree on the 1989 Batman holding up. I remember about 3 years back watching it in a film genres class in university (the genre was superhero/comic book movies) and it was incredibly underwhelming. Nicholson's Joker in particular comes off as comical (in a bad way), largely since he's just being Jack Nicholson and he's kind of become a caricature of himself in the last 10+ years. Ledger's Joker only made it look worse, despite the very different tones of each movie. But that wasn't the only thing. The whole (1989) movie felt very dated in its designs, performances, etc, and I wasn't alone in thinking that in the class. Big laugh from the entire class when "Music by Prince" came up on the screen. You know your movie is an 80s movie when...

Hey, just to not give into batman fanboism: Every batman after Begins was worse and worse. Though I disagree with the guy above, Nicholson's Joker was great. The actor himself always seemed disturbing to me and as Joker, well... the scene when he fries a guy and speaks with the burned corpse scarred me in my childhood.

I have the Dredd DVD...I still haven't watched it...even though I like Karl Urban's work. Doom was pretty good; and, he's an awesome "Bones" McCoy. I would probably rank Spider-Man higher, just because Spider-Man is still more family-(read kid)friendly than Batman Begins, Man of Steel and Dredd. Both my boys ask to watch The Avengers, and all of the Marvel super hero films and Spider-Man before they ask to watch Batman. I have to admit, that as much of a DC fan as I am, the DC films are just not fun. Don't get me wrong, they're good stories, but they're not as fun as The Avengers was.

This what I think Batman Begins did for Batman:

  • Made him relevant again and was taken seriously after the hideous 90s movies
  • Whether you like it or not, Batman basically switched places with Superman and become DC's big player in superhero media.
  • We got the Arkham games which have slight Nolan influence in them.

Then we also The Dark Knight which basically caused a shift for superhero movies and was the first superhero movie to make a billion dollars.
