Comic Art Commissions Wish List

If you could have an artist create a picture just for you, who would you choose and what would you ask them to make? The Comic Vine staff speaks their mind!

There's dozens upon dozens of fantastic artists in the industry and we all have our favorites. Luckily for us, quite a few of them are willing to do commissions. Sure, it often comes with a fairly hefty price tag, but we're talking about a unique piece of work from one of the artists we love, so it's totally worth it, right? That said, this option may be a bit too expensive for some of us, so let's take away the price tag and have a bit of fun thinking about the possibilities. If you had the ability to select three artists and have each of them draw something for you, who would you pick and what would you ask each of them to create? Well, the Comic Vine staff has spent a good deal of time thinking about this question and we've each made our choices. Once you're done seeing what we'd love to request, go ahead and chime in with your own picks. Remember, you can only pick three artists!

Tony "G-Man" Guerrero's picks

When I first saw Rod Reis' take on Moon Knight, I was blown away. With each piece of art he posts, I get more and more excited for his upcoming C.O.W.L. series, written by Kyle Higgins. He has a range of style and, at times, it gets raw and in your face. Exactly what I'd want to see in a Moon Knight piece.

I'd love an Alan Davis sketch of Kitty Pryde and Lockheed. When I first started reading X-Men comics, I immediately grew to love Kitty Pryde from GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS and the Dark Phoenix Saga (I read in trade). Later, Chris Claremont and Alan Davis took some of the mutants to England for EXCALIBUR. Having read a CAPTAIN BRITAIN trade with art by Davis, I was super excited over the series. It's hard to chose just one character for Davis' art but if I could only have one, it'd have to be Kitty.

I've probably mentioned it once or twice, but I'm a huge Mike Allred fan. I do actually own some original art by Allred. There's just something about the way he draws characters. They almost have an innocent quality to them and it's just so fun to look at. If I had to choose a character for Allred to draw, I wouldn't go with Madman since I already have a sketch of him. I'd be totally selfish (and maybe a little vain?) and want a sketch of myself or maybe Doctor Guerrero. I've been super-lucky to have been drawn by some different artists and it'd be pretty groovy to see me drawn in Allred style.

Mat "Inferiorego" Elfring's picks

One person's art who I find to be fantastic is Rod Reis. Although he's primarily known for doing the coloring work on AQUAMAN, his paintings and art are fantastic, which we'll see very soon on he and Kyle Higgins' collaboration C.O.W.L. It's not a comic book character, but I'd love to get a commission from him of Charles Foster Kane from the movie Citizen Kane. He's one of my favorite characters in cinema and Reis could do an amazing job with a black and white piece like this.

My next pick is a bit of a bummer because it's something I'll never be able to get. One of my favorite creators is Jack Kirby and one my favorite creations by him is Galactus (along with all his DC 4th World characters). To me, there are few creators who have drawn Galactus that really captivate me (aside from Adi Granov's covers for HUNGER), and Kirby is a man who I loved seeing draw him. One thing I LOVED about Kirby's art was his cosmic dots/circle/bubbles, which were really a trademark of his cosmic style.

My last one is a bit of a weird one, fans will understand why, but I'd love to have some WALKING DEAD artwork from the original series artist, Tony Moore. More (no pun intended) importantly, I'd love to have a piece of my favorite character from the series, Michonne. I love the way he drew the cover of issue #19. Michonne looks so badass, and I was always a huge fan of when she had her walkers with her. Sure, I'm not very creative about this one, but I'd love something with those three characters.

Gregg "k4tz" Katzman's picks

If you're reading Jeff Lemire's GREEN ARROW, then it's safe to say you know Andrea Sorrentino is a beyond brilliant artist. The guy has a virtually unparalleled ability to produce stunningly gorgeous and cinematic images. Seeing as he's crafted a masterpiece in just about every single issue of the series, I would absolutely love to see his version of Green Arrow and Deathstroke battling. We've seen in the recent issue that he can make people wearing an armor look seriously badass and position them in simply epic poses, so it's almost guaranteed he could make Slade Wilson look terrific. I can't imagine how he'd approach the image, but one thing is for sure, he'd make it glorious.

Mike Deodato Jr. is another artist I respect a great deal. During his time on numerous Marvel books, the artist has created so many impactful, dark and imposing images with some of my favorite characters. However, I'm pretty certain the guy has never tackled the Ninja Turtles before. Given his style, this could make for a seriously cool and absorbing image. If I had the option, I'd either request for him to do his version of the iconic TMNT #1 cover or maybe even the team fighting Shredder -- another character who he'd bring to life in a deliciously intimidating manner.

It was tough to narrow down the options for my third pick, but in the end, Jason Fabok has just blown me away with his work on Batman. With exceptional detail and oozing with grittiness, I just can't resist thinking about what Fabok could do with other characters I adore. Moon Knight is too obvious of a choice, so instead I'll go for another character I love: Boba Fett. We all know how awesome Batman is, but Fabok makes him appear immensely awesome. I can only image what he'd do with the infamous bounty hunter and that is most certainly something I'd pay to see.

Corey "Undeadpool" Schroeder's picks

I've always wanted Stefano Caselli to draw a World War II-era Green Goblin. I mean with a leather flight cap, a patchwork bomber jacket, and a diesel-powered Goblin Glider. I want something that looks like it'd be barely working, a real gas guzzling smoke spewer. And his pumpkin bombs would be, likewise, very slapdash, looking like they're made from spare bits of metal and, naturally, they'd explode into horrific shrapnel and untested chemical gasses. I think, as an agent of chaos, he'd be just as likely to bomb the Allies as well as the Axis.

I'm going to combine these two entries into one because they're cut from the same cloth. I want Saga's Fiona Staples to interpret the playable party cast of Chrono Trigger. Locked in battle, sitting around from some of that Jurassic Skullsmash, WHATEVER, I just want to see her sketchy, jagged take on some of my favorite characters with some of my favorite designs.

The other would be Chew's own Rob Guillory interpreting what is the, objectively, factually greatest game of all time: Earthbound. Again: core party and beyond that I do NOT care because based on all I've read of Chew, any other restrictions are just going to get in the way. I think those two styles complement each other to a tee.

@k4tzm4n: Props for giving Mike Deodatio Jr. respect man! He's my favorite comic artist.

For sure. I can't believe he's never even done a commission of the TMNT!

If I could pick any three artists...

  • Sam Keith of The MAXX because it was my favorite comic series
  • "TEX" who did early issues of Ghost Rider vol 2 in the 90s
  • Jim Lee... because he's Jim Lee.

TEX is my FAV artist of all time! I will buy any book he draws now a days regardless of how crappy it is!

Whenever I go to a con, I always look through Artist's Alley for people selling impressive work. If they're taking commissions and I like they're stuff I ask them to draw my favorite character: Jason Voorhees. I've got about 8 of them so far, give or take. Always looking to add a new Jason to my collection.

As you can probably tell by now, I'm a huge fan of his! Definitely my favorite artist. I would pay a lot to get an original sketch of Red Hood and the Outlaws framed.

I would love a commission from Nick Roche. I already have 5 prints from him and a signed Last Stand of The Wreckers hardback, so a commission (Maybe a Ultra Magnus/Galvatron clash) would be amazing

Any Avenger lady done by George Perez would be great.

Maybe Something from Alan Davis

Great question. I'd have Sean Murphy draw the Bat-family.

Another one I'd love to see is Andrea Sorrentino drawing an archery competition between Hawkeye and Green Arrow with Green Arrow winning, and David Aja doing the same but having Hawkeye win.

Hmm...maybe Jim Lee or Jae Lee drawing Simon Baz. That would be awesome as well.

For me, it's tough to pick the artist, so many I love with so many different styles.

The drawing I want though would be Deadpool standing in a victory pose over Batman. A noticeable big smile under his mask, hands on his waist, and one foot on Batman's chest. I love Batman as much as the next person, but hey, why not.
