You gotta love the pulp heroes. If anyone knows how to do them right, it's Dynamite Entertainment. Today they have announced the return of Captain Action, in conjunction with Captain Action Enterprises.
This September we'll see a six-issue miniseries that unites Captain Action with Green Hornet, Kato, the Spider and Black Venus. The series will be written by Chris Roberson and feature the art of Jonathan Lau.
The story takes place during the Cold War. Key officials on both sides of the Iron Curtain are replaced with doppelgängers, it leads to nothing but trouble on a large scale. With the state of world affairs at risk, it comes down to one secret agent to gather up the world's masked heroes to form a team to save the day.
"CODENAME: ACTION is a showcase of the things I love about jet-age superspies and Cold War-era superheroics," says the World Fantasy Award-nominated author, Chris Roberson. "In part, it functions as an origin story for Captain Action, reintroducing him to a modern audience while at the same time setting him firmly in the period in which the character first appeared. Captain Action was a product of the time that gave us the James Bond films, and TV shows like Man From UNCLE and The Prisoner, and CODENAME: ACTION is very much an attempt to put the character in that kind of context.
CODENAME: ACTION #1 appears in the July Diamond Previews catalog. Covers will ship in equal ratios to retailers and feature the art of Jonathan Lau, Jae Lee, Francesco Francavilla and Johnny Desjardins. There will also be a special "Captain Action Spy Cover" edition and a sixth, Subscription-Only "cute" variant with art by Art Baltazar.
