Classic Pulp Heroes Team Up in CODENAME: ACTION

Get ready for Captain Action, Green Hornet, Kato, Spider, Black Venus and more to get together to kick some butt.

You gotta love the pulp heroes. If anyone knows how to do them right, it's Dynamite Entertainment. Today they have announced the return of Captain Action, in conjunction with Captain Action Enterprises.

This September we'll see a six-issue miniseries that unites Captain Action with Green Hornet, Kato, the Spider and Black Venus. The series will be written by Chris Roberson and feature the art of Jonathan Lau.

The story takes place during the Cold War. Key officials on both sides of the Iron Curtain are replaced with doppelgängers, it leads to nothing but trouble on a large scale. With the state of world affairs at risk, it comes down to one secret agent to gather up the world's masked heroes to form a team to save the day.

"CODENAME: ACTION is a showcase of the things I love about jet-age superspies and Cold War-era superheroics," says the World Fantasy Award-nominated author, Chris Roberson. "In part, it functions as an origin story for Captain Action, reintroducing him to a modern audience while at the same time setting him firmly in the period in which the character first appeared. Captain Action was a product of the time that gave us the James Bond films, and TV shows like Man From UNCLE and The Prisoner, and CODENAME: ACTION is very much an attempt to put the character in that kind of context.

CODENAME: ACTION #1 appears in the July Diamond Previews catalog. Covers will ship in equal ratios to retailers and feature the art of Jonathan Lau, Jae Lee, Francesco Francavilla and Johnny Desjardins. There will also be a special "Captain Action Spy Cover" edition and a sixth, Subscription-Only "cute" variant with art by Art Baltazar.

Check out the covers and take a look at the interiors!

Looks interesting, I'd really like to get this but Villain's Month may leave me without enough money :(

Before anyone accuses them of trying to rip off Catwoman's look, keep in mind Black Venus had had this look long before Selina went with this outfit.

Oh man, Dynamite continues to give me reasons to love them

The lack of The Shadow means I will probably be passing on this. Really cool they are doing it though.

@jonny_anonymous: There was so much over Black Bat. Comparing him to Batman, Daredevil, Two-Face and Cassandra Cain even though he came before all of them. We make it easy here with the character pages and their 'first appearance' being listed.

@g_man: Yep, I always check the issues on here before I open my mouth lol

@g_man: what are names of those two in the Jae Lee cover, they resemble Bruce and Selina so my guess is they're Blackbat and Black Venus?

Why is he called Black Bat? He has night vision. Bats have poor vision and use their hearing for guidance.

Will he be called Daredevil or 'Devil?

Johnathan Lau is boss, but Chris Robinson is god awful, his dialogue reads like fan fiction.

Hey Dynamite where's my Project Superpowers chapter 3?

This is the first time I don't want Francavilla's cover but Jae Lee's!

Interesting title by the way.

I've been reading Masks every month and have to say it's quite average. After a fantastic issue 1 it's been mostly 3* all the way. They don't build each character enough and try to get everyone some panel time so the stories are spread real thin. It would have been better if each issue mainly focused on one character and the others briefly appeared. But the covers are awesome - specially the Alex Ross ones.

Hopefully this becomes a ongoing series.
