Claremont Writes X-WOMEN

Giving mutants with that DOUBLE X-factor their due.

She totally meant to do that.
She totally meant to do that.

Like I was saying yesterday, between GIRL COMICS and the Bushoujo statuettes, Marvel’s certainly giving its heroines a lot of love, lately. So when you want to complete that trifecta, who do you bring in? Legendary X-MEN writer Chris Claremont, who, among many other things, is known for giving mutants with that elusive double X-factor (get it?) a bigger spotlight.  Marvel’s released a preview for X-WOMEN, a 46-page one-shot coming out this July from Claremont and Milo Manara, the superstar artist from Italy.

Here are some choice quotes from Mr. Claremont regarding this comic…

"There are pirates. There are dastardly villains. There's a plot to destabilize the world. There is Kitty phasing through a yacht parked in the harbor and discovering that there are things that happen on yachts that young ladies shouldn't look at. There are severed heads galore. Destruction. Mayhem. Storm being inflicted with the usual annoying Claremont cliché of 'Oh look, I'm the prisoner of a pirate. Oh, and he's married. And I'm getting shot at from both sides.' It's a classic scene where everyone else gets hammered to their knees and confronted by villainy and the more they hammer the taller Storm stands. If I can't poke fun at myself, what's the point? And thrill and excitement and hopefully a happy ending. And lots of ancient airplanes. Because, what the heck, it's my story and I like ancient airplanes."

Good to see that even as revered a writer as Claremont can poke fun at himself.  Taking place a little out of continuity, the story concerns a sextet (seXtet, perhaps?) of Xavier’s finest - Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Rachel Summers, Emma Frost and Psylocke - - seeing their Mediterranean vacation interrupted by some dastardly pirates. I doubt there’s going to be any ABBA songs therein, but I suppose it’d be fun to conceive of this one-shot as MAMA MIA! by way of GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS.

Looking over Manara’s catalog of art, I’ll have to say that X-WOMEN looks to be a little toned down, but just as sensual, in comparison.  I think this is the second such special X-project Claremont’s done with a European artist. I recall that he was working on a Storm OGN for a while with Igor Kordey. However, I’m not sure what happened to it. Can any of you resourceful individuals in the metropolitan Comic Vine community help me out here? Did that comic ever comic? Did it ended up being broken up and serialized as a mini-series?

The X-Women are just RAINING the hurt down, aren't they?
The X-Women are just RAINING the hurt down, aren't they?

"I'm all grown up now! I wanna come back as part of the X-Women! Put me in, and I'm going to show you new things I can blow." (that's what she said)

I'm kind'a sick of Emma Frost already.  Too bad no Jean Grey even if this isn't in the continuity.  At least they have Rachel Summers in.  What about Jubilation Lee

Btw... X-Women?

Sounds naughty!  Just add 2 more X's in the title and you got yourself a straight to DVD comic!

Milo Minara as an artist on a Marvel book?  Holy Ravioli I would NEVER have guessed this to happen.  Not that I'm complaining.  Wow.  An X title I will look and maybe--just maybe--actually buy.  Only because of Minara's art.    Like you pointed out, obviously he has to tone his style down!

Surprised Marvel didn't use a female writer for X-WOMEN.

I just saw mention of this on Twitter & was about to write about it.

I don't care for Manara's soft porn comics.  I don't care for his soft porn poses of the lady X-Men.  I really don't need to see Kitty Pryde straddling a jet ski, and her pert buttocks clasping the machine as she disappears into the wall with a 'take me from behind' pose.  As for Storm's 'make sure you look at my nipples' outfit, it's just sad...

I care even less for yet another desperate attempt for Chris Claremont to cling on to the characters he can't let go of.  Just retire already.

Claremont doesn't need to make fun of himself. There are plenty of other who are happy to do that for him. The man hasn't written anything good in 20 years (give or take a few).

As for Manara... he's not a great artist, imo. Not sure why Marvel decided to work with him.

That's EXACTLY what it looks like... another dodgy hentai doujinshi of DOA.

The rest isn't much better.  The quality of the art is astoundingly bad.

How To Look Like Your Having Unsatisfactory Sex While Climbing A Jungle Vine
There's an 'On The Run' story, of which one page has someone who looks like Storm dangling from a vine... and for some reason, she's posed as if she's on top of someone, instead of the natural position someone would take to curl their body wards, providing a counter weight, and therefore help pull themselves up...

Worse yet, at the end of that page she's rescued and craddled by someone who... appears to be Storm?  What's the point in having black & white art if you can't differentiate between characters?

So if it wasn't Storm hanging from the waterfall, just who was she meant to be?

And just what is wrong with Storm's face???

I'm amazed that Marvel allowed this to be made, nevertheless published... Considering how Barry-Windsor Smith had to make Life-Death Part III into Adastra In Africa, I'm genuinely amazed this was allowed to be made, published and even associated with the X-Men.

Wow, xerox-kitty just deflated any interest I may have had in this book.   I DO like Minara's "soft porn" comics, so sue me, BUT his rendition of Storm---doesn't look quite right.  I don't know now.
Guess I will flip through it, doubtful if I will buy it.   Disappointing.

@Decept-O: I don't mind other people liking his work (but now I know you're really a dodgy old geezer who buys under the counter comics in a brown paper bag ;)

It's not that I hate his work in general.  I don't care for it most of the time.  It's just, having seen the 'promo' art for this book... I am genuinely ranty about how bad it is.

@xerox-kitty:
You've got me pegged wrong!  (but I'm still laughing!)  While I may a bit older I became familiar with MInara during some work he did on Heavy Metal many years ago during my younger days.  I don't buy any soft porn comics but I've seen his work and I liked it.   Bear in mind I've drawn some pin-up style and nude renditions of comic characters as well as my own original pin-up designs so I'm a bit more accepting of this type of material.

No, you DID point out that Storm does NOT look right, in ANY sense of the word!  No effort seems to have been made regarding her physicality, and especially her face!!  *yikes*!

Just to add if I do buy any "soft porn" or X-rated comics or the like, I would do it openly provided no kids are around.  No paper bags or under the counter for me!

Actually I'm glad you showed this, it gave me a free preview.

I thought superhero comics were about good guys fighting bad guys and saving the world NOT women who look like prostitutes showing off their naked body half the time.
First the films, tv shows, hollywood, now they are trying to pervert-ize the comics too.

Admittedly, this does look like soft porn, but I think you're going a little far by saying "prostitute looking women showing off their naked bodies." They're just wearing swimsuits, that doesn't make them prostitutes. And they're not naked.

Curious, though.... how exactly did the movies and cartoons "pervert-ize" the comics?? O.o

@Gene_Pool :  I never called them prostitutes, they just look like that for example Psylocke's dress and Emma's dress.
Hello, how can you say that a woman in a bikini is not naked ?
If you watch American media, you will realize that most movies, tv shows today show graphic adult stuff that would have never been shown on tv back in 1980's. Comics is part of the media, so its obvious that anything related to media will put in more adult mature themes in their content.

Well personally I do not think they look like prostitutes, I think they look stunning.
Being naked constitutes being dressed in your birthday suit ONLY. Meaning, having a swimsuit on covering certain parts of your body IS NOT NAKED.

And I guess that depends really on what your watching.
Except for the last part, the X-men cartoons and movies are hardly adult-themed, especially when compared to their comic counterparts.

Bikini only covers like what 5-10% of your body. how is that not naked ? unless your an American whose okay with following the 'western underwear culture' you will agree with me.
There are many cartoons these days that have adult nudity, and vulgar language such as Southpark, Drawn together, family guy.
When I meant movies and tv shows I meant movies in general not just x-men movies.

As for your last sentence. Today they made x-men comics adult-themed, tomorrow they may make cartoons adult themed too.

I'm curious as ti who all these girl comics marvel are kickin' out are actually aimed at.
Boys too nervous or short to buy playboy or who just hav a super fetish?
Surely if marvel are lookin' to give female readrs some thing quality books staring female characters would work better than this cop out. It's like the equivilant of a comic doll forthe girls to play with.
Has Joey Q read Echo? Birds of Prey? Greg Rucka or Gail Simones Wonder Woman runs? Darwyn Cookes Catwoman?
Are these just practice untill they eventually get it right?

Try harder marvel.

Manara and this book feel pretty inapropriate for Marvel.
I really don't think this is the kind of thing Marvel should be doing with their characters.

Manara should be stickin' with his soft porn comics.
I am kinda curious who's readin' them though. Go buy a playboy or some thing. I mean really. The internet's full of real life naked ladies if that's what you need.
Keep it out of comic books.

i dunno. this may be good. cant deny Psylocke and the big...canon though.

only immediate thing that kind of hit me right off the bat, is CC is renowned actually for writing
female superhero's who we're on equal footing and maybe even better than their male counterparts
on their team, and we're not reduced nor degraded, and even made some firsts for women in comics,
so why, when that is one of his most respectable claims to fame, would he spit on it?

Pay cheque?
Claremont's like any artist and he's losin' steam.
All these Marvel doll comics are startin' to annoy me no. If they can't do a decent in continuity series staring a female character then don't just throw random gack at us. Especially not this kind of exploitative nonsense. Like you said your self, what's goin' on with Psylocke and that cannon? Does Manara know any thing about the characters other than the fact they're superheroes?

Marvel!
We know you can do good female lead in their own series, recent She Hulks and Alias proved that, so what is goin' on with all these dire doll comics?
It feels like it's just being done to tick a box on a list. "Comics with women? Check"

Please, don't bother if the quality's not there.

Pervert-izing comics wasn't actually a new thing. In the 90's, there was an era called the bad girl comics style.
