Christian Bale On Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

Does this explain the director's choice?

There is a lot of rumors and facts being thrown around over The Dark Knight Rises lately. One topic of discussion that usually comes up is over Anne Hathaway playing the role of Catwoman. Despite Christopher Nolan's track record and ability to cast the actors successfully, there are still critics dismissing his choice over Selina Kyle. We haven't seen her in action and have only had a couple images of her in costume.

In an interview with Inquirer, Christian Bale spoke out about Hathaway being cast.

I was there when we did the screen test for her. The thing that I said to Chris [Nolan] that day was that there were many very accomplished actresses who had read for the role. I’m terrible at auditions, so I’m very impressed when somebody really seems to acquire an ownership of a character without having worked on it or prepared for some amount of time.

I saw that in Anne. When Chris watched the screen test, he agreed that Anne did a wonderful job. In many ways, she has the hardest job. There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne’s role as being the toughest job of any of us. In my case, I’ve stopped referencing outside sources. I now reference Chris’ own world of Batman as a guide to what I will continue doing.

We'll have to wait and see for ourselves. The fact that she kicked ass in her audition in front of both Nolan and Bale should say something. Hopefully we'll get to see her in action soon.

Cool.

I wouldn't have expected her to fit this role but honestly, I have faith in her ability, especially if Nolan chose her.

I'm sorry, but this is not Catwoman! First off, where is her sexy boob cleavage?

Posted by Manchine

She would be the only reaso why I would want to see a Batman movie.

I've been a little apprehensive about Hathaway, this helps me feel more reassured. I think she'll do a good job

I didn't really think she would fit the role of Catwoman, but I have faith in her ability as an actress to make this a memorable role.

THIS! IS! HATHAWAYYYYY!!!!

As a professional thief, I very often wear bright blue LEDs on my head.

I like Christopher Nolan but he is horrible at casting women in his films

Posted by Joygirl

Yeah... cleavage has become a part of Catwoman, why would Nolan cover it? I'm still apprehensive about her, and Bane in particular (he just looks absurd) but I'll certainly watch the movie.

I think she's a good actress. I never would've pegged her as Catwoman but hey, I'm excited to see what she does.

Catwoman is suppost to be a thief yet she wears high heels and not the go go boot kind but those very small thin high heels I want to know how is she going to fight people off and climb up things wearing those boots. Plus the lack of a cowl kinda says she doesn't care to be caught and jailed (DNA anyone her hair is flowing around) This is a bad design and not because of the actress but the costume design for her. And Nolan is all about realism yet he can't put Catwoman in a realistic way of wearing a full cowl not only to safe guard her identity but also to stop leaving traces of herself like her hair?

Needs more cleavage.

Meh, whatever. The ladies in Nolan's films have never really been the interesting parts of them, but it's Catwoman, so here's to hoping it's good.

Either way, I'm a bit more interested in how Bane turns out in this movie, he seems to be the biggest departure from the comic character.

I think Anne Hathaway is a good actress and may be able to pull off playing Catwoman. I am actually excited to see if she will do a good job with the role but I believe she can.

I'm just going to wait and see the movie before making any judgements. In my opinion, Anne Hathaway has had both hits and misses with her acting performances, though I'm not sure whether to blame her or her casting agent for her performances in awful movies like Bride Wars. It's difficult to rate her as an actress since most of her high-profile appearances have been in terrible, terrible romantic comedies where she's played fantastically dull, horribly written characters not even the most talented actress on earth could pull off with dignity. I think she's okay in the few non-terrible films I've seen her in, so I'm mildly hopeful about her ability to do justice to the role. I also trust in Nolan's ability to cast his films right.

As much as I am excited about this movie, even though I constantly hear from others, "the more I hear about this movie the less excited I get." I don't think we can judge either way. The actors wont say anything bad about the movie they are making, maybe years from now they might look back and say, "Pluto Nash was a mistake, but at the time i thought he would lead into sequels and toys." Bale's not going to say, "I think Hathaway was awful but she has the part so what are you going to do?" I am sure she is great in the part, and I cannot wait to see her and the rest in the movie. So I am still waiting for a clip that shows acting before I judge one way or the other.

I've always liked Anne Hathaway. Maybe not as a choice for Selina Kyle but certainly as an actress. Either way I'm sure she'll be able to pull off this role.

I really wish they'd just scrap the Catwoman character... but, if someone can do it right, maybe it's Hathaway.

Not kidding never liked batman. Definately don't like batman movies except for the first one. Batman ranks at the top of the list of comic characters I don't like.

I'm not sure why there's this expressed animosity towards Anne Hathaway while plenty of other actors weren't necessarily what people envisioned for those roles. Can anyone honestly say Heath Ledger was their first choice for Joker? Liam Neeson as Ra's Al Ghul? Christian Bale was somewhat advocated for but not massively so. And what about Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow? Nobody saw those coming but it turned out tremendously well. So why shouldn't Anne Hathaway be afforded the same opportunity?

Not to mention, from what I've seen, all the on set footage photographed of Anne Hathaway took place in the same scene which none of us really know the context of.

And fans, of all people, truly make the worst casting "decisions" I've ever seen in those fantasy threads. Any actress with red hair is a candidate for Jean Grey, any decently hot stock actress on the CW can land major roles easily...I mean, come on now!

People were screaming bloody murder about Heath Ledger as the Joker too. And look how that turned out.

There is no way that Nolan would ever produce a cleavagey Catwoman. I think thats something everyone should just comes to terms with. Nolan is making as a realistic a version of Batman he can, and he wouldn't have Catwoman running around with her costume zipped half way down, even if it was to "distract her enemies". We've only seen a few stills, and who knows what her final final final design will look like.

And yes, she is a professional thief, but a giant ass black motorbike isn't really known for its stealth abilities, so shockingly enough, this might not be a scene where she is robbing someone.

Posted by -Vigil-

I think she's the perfect fit for the role. Not like I like Catwoman or Hathaway, but still.

Posted by Decept-O

Still don't see why anyone would complain about the casting of Hathaway. Unless it is due to her previous "sugary" roles and the totally different type of character Catwoman is in comparison? I say give her a chance, I really doubt there should be any worries.

Posted by mickoreo_LZ

I have to believe that even if Hathaway does a mediocre job as Selina that it won't have a huge impact on the film as a whole. Bane seems to have a much bigger role in the movie than Selina, and it'll be his portrayal and acting that will determine the quality of the movie. Will he be as smart as Bruce like he should be? In the Knightfall saga Bane's biggest strength was his mind, deducing Batman's identity, and formulating a brilliant plan to take him out, which succeeded. I don't care about the mask or the look, I just hope he's not some mindless, muscle-bound thug That said, Nolan and Bale have stated that this is the final chapter in their Batman saga, and I'm sure they know the importance of making it as memorable a finale as possible. I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will be nothing short of epic

The only problem I still have is with the costume... She needs shorter hair as well in my opinion. Also no high heels for dang sake...

Posted by phrainiac_crazeee

@fables87: hahahaha indeed, where be this "sexy boob cleavage"?!?!!!

Posted by FoxxFireArt

A good audition doesn't excuse that outfit picture of the spiked heels and ears on her head that looked like they are from the Adam West Batman series. Those images are what shattered my hopes.

I don't really have an opinion on Hathaway as Catwoman, because I honestly don't really care enough about the films. I enjoyed the first two Nolan films but never found myself invested in them to the point where I'm concerned with the casting.

Besides some just loathing Hathaway in general, I believe a problem people have is that the director's vision will often differ of varying degrees to their own. Before they even see anything they have an idea in their head of what they think a character should be, and more often than not the vision of the director is something very different.

It's interesting as I could ask people I know "Who is Catwoman?". I would definitely get different responses. Not including comic book representation, some would say Julie, some would say Michelle, and some younger folks would even say Halle. Point being, there's enough variations of her that there's no predefined mold for the character. The character seems to change enough that one would think that there's no reason to really have any expectations.

Where I stand, the Selina Kyle I love is in comic books, has short jet-black hair, and isn't portrayed by an actress. Beyond making this post, I'm not too concerned with what they do with the character in Hollywoodland.

Catwoman for this movie, forgot her cat ears.

I was a little apprehensive about Anne Hathaway as Catwoman because of the roles she typically plays. But I saw Rachel Getting Married and Hathaway played a really intense character and did a wonderful job with it. That reminded me that Nolan knows what he's doing. He's made controversial choices on casting before and they all turned out wonderfully. I'm willing to wait before I say it won't be good.

I won't believe it till I see it. Too bad the costume sucks (imo)

Reason numero uno to appreciate Nolan's work already. Don't get me wrong, I love that Catwoman is involved in Arkham City but her dialogue is written as though everything she encounters makes her horny- she even has a move where she kisses her opponents. She also has a zipped down suit and naturally her other, less-cleavagey options have to be compensated for by making her alternative suits so tight they creep all the way up her butt (so "ass-men" feel as included as the breast-loving population).

People complained initially Anne Hathaway wasn't sexy enough but, frankly, Catwoman is oversexed all too often anyways.

Posted by jcbart

The only thing I don't like is the outfit (heels and flimsy PVC? Great protection there luv). Hathaway will be fine I'm sure as Kyle.

Posted by MetallicMercury

I think that Anne Hathaway is a great actress but some people are just not suited to portraying superheroes. Jennifer Garner is one of my favourite actresses, but she just didn't seem to be able to fully take on the role of Elektra, in the film of the same name. She just seemed a bit out of place.

I like Anne Hathaway, but I still don't know about her playing Catwoman. Christopher Nolan can pull something off so I'm excited about it and everything else.
