Chris Evans Talks 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' Being Typecast, and Falcon

Chris Evans answered some questions on being Captain America again at a press conference for the upcoming movie.

Last week was the screening and premiere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We also attended a press conference for the movie featuring directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Feige. Last week we also posted our interview with Anthony Mackie on taking the role of Falcon.

With so many questions asked during the press conference, here are the big questions and answers from Chris Evans on portraying Captain America again.

Chris Evans on past concerns over taking on the character and being typecast as Captain America.

“Had I not done the movie, it would’ve been the biggest mistake of my life. It really would have been the biggest regret to this day, and there are many. It’s changed everything for me. Not just what it’s made me do outside of these movies but it’s so comforting knowing you’re making good movies. It would be a nightmare to trapped in a contract when you’re making films you’re not proud of. Marvel has the Midas’ Touch. So every time you suit up, you know you’re making something of quality. It’s rewarding on every level. Thank God, I had the right people in my life pushing me to make the right decision.”

On working together with Anthony Mackie and having Falcon in the movie.

Anthony Mackie joked, “We just got cast as the remake of Lethal Weapon. We’re excited about that. It’s pretty cool. Wait, what was the question? I was holding that joke so I wasn’t listening. [to Chris] Go ahead, my bad.”

“I’ve known Anthony for a while now. This is our third movie together. It’s funny, everyone I’ve worked with up here, it’s familiar. It’s old relationships. When I first met Anthony, it wasn’t on a movie set. We got along very well. We hit it off very well, off set..”

Scarlett Johansson jumps in and asked, “Where did you meet, Chris?”

“...The library.

We just got along. It was very easy having this kind of repartee with him off set and I think that translates on set. You can tell right now, the guy is life, he’s energy. He just brings a certain type of spark that you need on film and you need off, as well.”

Anthony added, “I agree.”

On working with the legendary Robert Redford.

“It was amazing. It was pretty intimidating that day because he is a living legend. It’s always such a treat when someone you look up to, that much, lives up to the expectation. He could have very easily come on set and hijacked the film. Not just as an actor but given his past as a director and his experience, he could have very easily taken over. He showed up with the utmost professionalism.”

How’s it feel returning to the character and putting the costume back on?

“It always feels like it’s gets tighter. I thought it was supposed to get more comfortable but it’s gotten worse. I’m not joking. But they always make improvements on it. Once you get a good sweat going, it loosens up quite a bit.

It’s exciting. A lot of it has to do with the fact you know you’re making good movies. If you were disappointed with the previous films, it’s going to be hard to mentally prepare yourself for living in that thing for four or five months. Since Marvel just can’t stop making quality movies, it’s exciting, it’s humbling, and it’s an honor to jump back into it.

No matter how uncomfortable it is.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in the U.S. on April 4. Stay tuned for more coverage coming up.

It's weird how when these actors say they relish the role and are grateful it makes me want to see it more. I hope the Falcon / Cap relationship is as good as it is in the comics.

Maybe he was as a child. Hair color can change over time.

Now, Chris Pine is no blonde, but Star Trek has convinced people otherwise. Too bad the CW couldn't get Grant Gustin to go blonde.

I completely take back what I said a long time ago before Chris was given the part, that Matt Dillion would have made the best Captain America.

He was a great Human Torch but he is an even better Captain America. I can't help but bring up how it seems Chris Evans' feelings towards the role have changed drastically. I remember when the first movie was coming out he used to speak about how nervous he was about signing a long term multi-movie contract because he wasn't sure how the franchise would turn out. Really glad to see he has found true love in the roll of Steve Rogers and I can't wait for this movie and future ones featuring him.

I'll admit I wasn't sure about Evan's when he was first cast as Cap, but after seeing CA1 I knew he was the perfect guy for the role, even more so after The Avengers. He's a great Captain America.

I still don't see Evans as a good Captain America, the man who could command a god. He doesn't quite possess the stern and intimidating presence of Cap like in the comics. He's the perfect Johnny Storm though. That being said, I'm looking forward to the new movie.

I knew Chris Evans would be a great Cap when I saw Sunshine and The Perfect Score, way back when.

i guess im just picky, but i really dont think Chris has the face to pull of the Captain America mask properly. if Cap was maskless the whole movie he would be great though.

@hushofthewind: Then we'd have the whole "Why doesn't Cal ever wear his mask?" issue just like with Hemsworth's Thor never wearing his helmet.

I think the ratio Cap wears his mask off and on is just right

So... I'm the only one wondering what those other 2 movies they starred in together is huh?

Ima be real. I had thought this was a BIG mis-cast when Chris was announced for the first movie, but after seeing it... I still think there MAY have been someone better (There's a guy on Supernatural I really think could have done it but don't remember his name) but he's a pretty good Star Spangled Soldier.

NOW WHAT I'M REALLY ECSTATIC ABOUT is seeing Sam Wilson on screen. Ima say something that 96% of Black comic book movie fans don't say out loud, but I ALWAYS look for how well they cast the Black character. Wasn't too impressed with Sam Raimi's choice of Robbie Robertson, Halle didn't quite do it for me as Storm (Nia Long would have killed it to me), and so far the only Black casting I've thought was downright perfect is Wesley in blade.... but I'm am THRILLED to see what Anthony Mackie does with Falcon.

by the way white folks I'm just as pissed Johnny Storm and Perry White were changed black as you are.... No regrets on Sam Jack though, yall just gonna have to eat that one.

I THINK CAP 3 SINCE IT COMING OUT IN 2016, MAY DEAL WITH THE FALLOUT FROM AGE OF ULTRON. WHERE AS CAP 2 LEADS INTO ULTRON, CAP 3 IS GONNA TAKE YOU FROM ULTRON INTO THE HOLE THANOS IMPERATIVE ARCH

I am a girl and I am not such a fan of action movies to be honest, but when you have action, adventure & special effects, you'd be stupid to miss it! Avengers was a killer movie, I loved it! Scarlett was a beauty! What made me comment here is that Avengers was amazing, and now when I watch the trailer of Captain America: The Winter Soldier I am super duper excited! The guy is brilliant. He is funny and has such an amazing physique. Fits the role perfectly! 3rd April you better come fast! I am desperately waiting!
