Chris Evans Is Not Looking Forward To Becoming 'Captain America'

In a candid interview at the Toronto Film Festival, Evans reveals his hesitations about reprising the role.

Some people would thank their lucky stars for the chance to play Captain America in a movie; yet the man that will get paid to do it isn't all too thrilled about the process he will have to endure. Sure he might like the character and he's definitely excited about bringing the Winter Soldier story arc to the big screen, but there are definitely things about the process it takes to get there that leave him less than thrilled.

No Caption Provided

I'm dreading it, this is what I keep thinking. We start Captain America 2: Winter Soldier in March so come January I have to…get back in that routine. And then I start thinking about all the future movies and I think to myself, "how am I going to keep getting big?" It's such a chore. I hate to admit it but it's such a chore. It's months and months of lifting heavy, heavy stuff. Not looking forward to it. But you know what, it's worth it because I am happy with the movies and I do love the character. What am I saying though, these are good problems to have.

Not to worry, Chris Evans; we all appreciate the long hours you spend "lifting heavy stuff" at the gym. We promise. Really though, it isn't just the countless hours at the gym that seem to be an issue for Evans. Evidently there is a lot more to it than that. During the interview Evans brought up an interesting point; not only is he more comfortable doing smaller, independent films opposed to the big budget blockbuster movies, but he finds them to generally be better films. In the interview Evans begs the question, "how often do you come out of a big budget movie thinking it was good?" That, in general, is a pretty bold statement. But we can't knock him for his honesty. Truth be told, he does make a pretty good point.

== TEASER ==

I've been pretty candid in the past, I'm not a huge fan of the studio movies…The process of making the movies is very tedious. Sometimes the final product becomes…sometimes the original vision becomes homogenized. The promoting process is a real chore. I much prefer these smaller films, they are just much more my speed. Luckily…thank God these movies were good…because, they're not always. I was so lucky. But it affords you the opportunity to do the smaller films you really want to do so…I'm really in the perfect situation right now…where I get to do a movie every six months with a group of people I really love. I love Marvel, I love The Avengers…and then in my down time I can go and do movies like this (The Iceman).

I go into every movie thinking it's going to be the worst thing in the world. It's unfortunate but true that often when I go to the movies I leave disappointed. Most of the time the best movies I see are at festivals like this (Toronto International Film Festival). You go to a big blockbuster movie the chances that you're going to walk out disappointed are pretty good, in my opinion. So when you jump on board to do a giant studio film movie you think, "what are the chances that this is going to turn out good?" Unfortunately slim. The fact that it came out the way it [The Avengers] did….God, man. That Joss. That Joss Whedon. Thank God for Joss Whedon! It's him. I owe that guy.

I think I can speak for everyone who enjoyed The Avengers when I say, we all "owe that guy." If not for Whedon, we might not be seeing a second Avengers film in the future as well as so many more superhero movies currently in pre-production. Regardless of the man's sentiments about hitting the gym as hard as he'll have to, we are still definitely looking forward to his reprisal of Captain America.

Look at it this way Mr. Evans, the work out may be hard, but your health is all the better for it. Besides, you're CAPTAIN AMERICA, and you are awesome on the role! We want more of you.

I appreciate his comments. He's not whining. He's giving his honest opinion of movies, and the role he's being required to play, all while giving credit where its due. Good job Chris.

I can understand why he is hesitant, since it's not just him getting paid to work out, it's him getting paid to lead a specific lifestyle for a time that dictates what he can or have to eat, what he can spend his time on and how long he's allowed to sleep. And if he is not normally into that kind of lifestyle, the fun of it can probably wear off pretty quickly.

@The_Peter_Cosmic: I don't see what him being scrawny when he was a kid has to do with him now. Alot of people were completely different when they were kids, but whatever, if you look at him as the Human Torch he was in decent shape, and even in Not Another Teen Movie he was in good shape. But that's fine we can agree to disagree, it's not really that big of a deal for me, I was just stating my opinion.

That's a laughable statement to anyone who has worked out long term. Evans is naturally scrawny, like 135 scrawny. By his own admission he has to work out constantly just to achieve the muscular slim look. You really think that a naturally scrawny thirty year old man who works hard just to be a normal bodyweight can double the results he's made in 10+ years in three months? Seriously, that's a joke.

I don't get the feeling that he is not looking forward to the next movie at all. His concerns are legitimate concerns, he's worried about maintaining the body he'll need to play Cap for not only the sequel, but the next avengers movie and any other Cap movies or avengers movies after that. He's an actor not a model or olympian. It's not like he's saying that he never liked the role or anything like that. He's only saying how the workout aspect of the role can be a pain in the ass sometimes but the results are worth it.

No, it's not impossible, particularly when it's less a situation of actually putting on much more muscle and more a situation of lowering your body fat to get the ripped effect. I don't get the impression that Chris Evans is trying to go from being a completely out of shape slob to Captain America. He's just going from being in "good shape" to "exceptional shape" (and then maintaining it). If you have a good trainer (which he no doubt does), eat the right foods, and literally make your "day job" working out/getting in shape, you can pack on 10-12, maybe 15 pounds of muscle in a surprisingly short time (or lose a like amount of flab). It's putting on (or losing) more than that which starts to get difficult.

Basically Chris is going to spend a few months training with the intensity of an Olympic athlete. It's unlikely he's talking about just a couple hours in the gym in the evenings (or mornings). Unless your day job is "bodybuilder" or "personal trainer" you're probably NOT "in the gym all the time" to the extent Mr. Evans will be for a while.

http://www.examiner.com/article/chris-evans-how-i-morphed-from-dud-to-stud-captain-america

Not sure where you are getting your information, but you are incorrect on several points. First of all he isn't refining muscle he already has, he had to gain 20lbs of muscle without gaining fat in 3 months to play Cap. Even a sedentary person couldn't make gains like that and gaining muscular weight is a much, much slower process for someone who already works out regularly. For a person who is already somewhat muscular like Chris Evans you're talking about a bare minimum of 18 months to gain that much muscle naturally. Especially since he's admittedly a naturally thin person.

Furthermore, you will never find a successful natural bodybuilder that lifts weights for 2+ hours daily. If you understand anything about the testosterone to cortisol correlation then you know that would be catastrophically counter productive. That's natural bodybuilding 101 and it's especially true for a man over 25 years (Evans is 31). Steroids in Hollywood are extremely common, by the way. This isn't contested by anyone who is "in the know" on the issue.

I'm not calling the man a cheat, he's just doing what he has to do to fill a role. I'm just pointing out that a person can't cram years worth of bodybuilding into a few months. I am, by the way a personal trainer and I've been working out and hanging out in gyms for over ten years so I do know a thing or two about the issue.

His candidness about this makes me like the guy more. Speaking the truth to the media where most people would just say they love everything they do and the movie industry just to save face is very 'captain america' of him, and exactly why he's perfect for the role- not only can he pull off the look, but he has Steve's honesty.

Cry baby... how bout working for a living... no make that try working two jobs and watching your kids and barely get to do anything with your spouse because the two of you work so damn much and take care of the kids all the time... get a clue Chris Evans. I still love Captain America and the Avengers but he's a tool for spewing hate towards doing what he loves and getting millions for it.

The title for this is completely misleading. Evans stated his displeasure but overall he assured it was all very much worth it. If you plan on posting facts then you better put some of the truth in the title as well, as oppose to leading us to think that Chris Evans does not want to continue his role as Captain America.

Why don't YOU go to Africa and complain to them about a movie actor noting that it takes a lot of hard work to get into superhero shape?

I get the impression you and a few others here don't see the hypocrisy of screaming "What about the starving kids in Africa?!? ZOMG First World Problems" while you're sitting behind your computer posting on a comic book entertainment message board (presuming of course that some of you aren't just being deliberate trolls).

In fact, just about any of you saying "First World Problems" are probably giant hypocrites given you've unlikely lived in Third World conditions for any significant length of time in your lives. Probably never even witnessed them outside of TV or maybe a quick jaunt into Mexico.

It has to be rough for actors at times. I mean one movie he or she may have to be thin and not overly athletic and then for their next they have to be a super hero. It has its reward but it must take it's toll. I really enjoyed Chris's Cap. I'm happy though that he is ready to take on the character again.

It divides a fan base if the actor in question was a badass in one film, and something else entirely i another (once again, Ryan Renolds as Deadpool and Hal Jordan).

But Evans is so good at Cap that I seriously cannot wrap my mind around him being Johnny Storm. (Plus the fact that FF is being re-done means that now someone else can take over that mantle.)

Eckhart as Cap? Don't make me laugh. 1. He's way to aged up to play him, 2. He's Two-Face. Rule of thumb is you never mix Marvel and DC. Then you'll get another Green Lantern. 3. Eckhart's filming I, Frankenstein right now. From the makeup hours alone he wouldn't have time jumping into Captain America's routine and mannerisms. Not like Jeremy Renner, who just this year alone is in 3 films (Avengers, Hansel and Gretel: WitchHunters and The Bourne Legacy, but doesn't have to have scar tissue and deformities plastered onto him like a modern age Lon Chaney.)

I hear ya Chris, i haven't gone to the theaters for anything other than the Batman movies, the Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man and the first Iron Man movie in a long time. Most of the stuff that you find in theaters recently is just subpar, all style and no substance, they look good but expect the look to cover up the cliche or weak story, for a good example just look at Transformers

Also agree on the Joss Whedon love, any man who can make both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dr. Horrible is awesome in my eyes.

I don't think it's a "first world problem", a first world problem is eating yourself to death and never bothering to exert oneself nor needing to then complaining about it.

He's working extremely hard. I really don't know how he does it, I look at his body and he looks like he's prepped for cardio but has strength training too. That's a lot and a lot of work that would probably kill most of us. He's sweating and pushing himself to the limits for his money- that's no small feat.

It's definitely different than someone like Kim Kardashian saying "I work soooo hard, like everyday" - she didn't have to do anything to get anything she has. Even the most brilliant cosmetics professional with a far superior product can't sell as well as her because they never had a sex tape or reality show.

Chris Evans has to gain the strength of 10 men to pull this off! He's earning his keep, that's for sure.
