Carrie Fisher Confirmed for 'Star Wars'

It looks like Princess Leia's back!

We've known the new trilogy will see the return of classic characters, but so far we haven't had any cement information. Mark Hamill said he's in talks, and Harrison Ford hasn't confirmed the rumor yet. But now the Alderaan Princess flat-out says yes, she'll be back.

Actress Carrie Fisher confirmed her return during an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated. Aside from the confirmation, she only gave a few sarcastic answers, so don't get your hopes up for any new story info.

Disney is going to continue the Star Wars saga, producing movies set to hit theaters starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether you’ll reprise the role of Princess Leia?
Yes.
What do you think Princess Leia is like today?
Elderly. She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home [laughs].
I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.
And still wearing the bagel buns?
The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized.
No Caption Provided

If you're a fan of the character, I highly recommend checking out the new STAR WARS comic. It's only on issue #2 and tells a new (and rather awesome) story with the original trilogy's key cast.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams. Viners, are you happy to see Fisher come back to the franchise?

i remember reading several about 15 years ago, but I'm kinda glad their not following the books. Their is absolutely no way the "average Star Wars fan" (sorry for long quotes) who has read these, would be able to be fair in judging movies based on source material.

You're probably right. I've honestly never read any of the novels, that I know of. I just liked it that they tried their best to keep it all cohesive. It made me feel like even though I hadn't kept up with the umpteen billion books, I might claim at least a knowledgeable overview of the SW universe, because I had seen the movies. Now? For all I know, it's Power Rangers with Star Wars faces on it.

The books are all null and void. To start with, their were more than one set of books. More importantly, almost every source has said that the books are to be ignored. I'm sure their will be elements from the books in the script, but for the most part they are not going to play into this mythos. At least that's how I understand it.

I'm actually really sorry to know that. Despite what anyone thinks of George Lucas, as far as I've ever heard, he and his crew worked really hard to make sure that the various media were all part of the larger SW universe as a whole - no one story contradicting another. He was working to build a new mythology. To completely disregard that seems a waste.

I can see where it might be necessary, as far as bringing in new actors, but it seems like there'd be another way to do that.

I've been really confused about the original cast showing up. How many years have passed between Ep 6 & 7? How does this work? I love Harrison Ford and all, but the guy is 70. Fisher is 56, and Hamill is 61. If it's not a long period of time, this can't possibly be good casting.

Thats the point. There supposed to be old. I'm guessing that about the same amount of years as passed in the movie setting as did in the real world. This is going to be a passing of the torch kind of movie. Should be great.

I get the "passing of the torch" idea. My point is: is that what happens in Episode 7 (the book)? I don't know, so I'm honestly curious how far they're departing from the material here. Luke, Leia and Han have long lived roles in the books, spanning many novels. Are they just jumping to the end of these characters, for Ep 7?

@JamDamage: lol, true

@wmwadeii: Agreed, and I said the same about the x-men cast. Small roles only.

@Reignmaker: That would be a good part for Luke, cool idea. Though he is supposed to be ubber powerful so maybe its best to also make this a small part.

I hope the role of Ford and Fisher is a small one. Hamill's role will likely be that of Yoda/Obi-wan so I'm ok with that.

If this series wants to get modern and restart an ongoing franchise, it needs to focus on newer blood.

Reign, why couldn't you have just said this last week when we were arguing? I don't have any problems with this. I bet you dollars to donuts that Ford gets his death scene he wanted - and I am okay with that. You see - we can agree on that at the least young man.

this was to be expected. We all knew they were going with new characters. Trying to recast would have been a George Lucas like mistake.

It's like the new X-men movie. Why do they think we need all of the original cast to make a movie appeal to the audience. I was happy when they mentioned it was going to be a new and original story. I figured this would eliminate most if not all of the original cast for something new. Hopefully they have small speaking roles and are just in the movie in either flashbacks or a passing of the torch type of scenario. See them for 5 minutes in the start of the film and never again.

I don't know what to think about this... I thought that Episode VII would still have the same characters but with a different cast.

I guess this confirms that we are going to be introduced to new main characters now.
