I’ll put this question out to both the guys and the gals in the Comic Vine community—would it be weird to date an ex-girlfriend’s little sister? How about her niece? What if you were frozen in between the relationships? Would that make it all OK?
Captain America may not have ever had a girlfriend with the kind of notoriety as Lois Lane or Mary Jane Watson, but the Carters might be some of the most unique ladies to ever romance a superhero. Let's find out about who this gun-tottin' Captain America-kissing gal is.
== TEASER ==PEGGY CARTER
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
Cap never actually got to know this Agent 13’s real name during their time together in World War II. She was an American intelligence serving with the French resistance behind enemy lines and thusly had a cover to maintain
—a spy can trust no man, after all. Though they had many adventures on the battlefield, they would be apart for several weeks prior to Cap’s fateful accident near the end of the war. It would be decades before they’d ever see eachother again (the exact number of years will keep getting longer) and their reunion would be a tragic one for the cruel circumstances of Cap’s return. Having been cryogenically frozen during all the intervening time, Cap hadn’t aged a day while she had grown into an elderly woman like all normal human beings do. Cap would at last learn his first love’s real name as she was suffering from Alzheimer’s in assisted living home. Recently, she passed away due to old age, having lived a full, rich life while his was still very much beginning.
Peggy will be played by Hayley Atwell in THE FIRST AVENGER and it looks like she’s been reconceived in a number of ways to better fit into Cap’s origin. She’s still an Allied intelligence officer, but is now a Brit with apparently as many administrational duties as combative ones since she's acting as Steve Rogers’ minder during his participation in Project: Rebirth. Considering that, it looks like she’s been merged with Cindy Glass, Cap’s earlier “first love” who served in the same capacity during THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY and turned out to be a German double-agent. Unless the movie's really going to throw a curve ball at us, I wouldn't go on expecting that particular twist.
SHARON CARTER
Surely many of you have been told that you look like a relative. But have you been told that you’re the absolute spitting image of them?
Soon after Cap thawed from the ice and emerged into the modern world, he rescued a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative from the villainous Batroc and was subsequently startled to find that this “Agent 13” looked exactly like his old girlfriend. It turned out that the woman was, in fact, a niece of Peggy's (originally, her younger sister until continuity’s “sliding timeline” necessitated retcons.) She’d grown up hearing stories from her aunt about all the adventures she had in the war with this legendary man. In time, Sharon would follow Peggy in more respects than from espionage by becoming a professional and romantic partner of Cap's. Consistently working within all the intersecting affairs of secret agents and superheroes, Sharon ascended to directorship of S.H.I.E.L.D. at one point and is currently supervising Cap’s covert strike force of Secret Avengers.
Interestingly enough, Hayley Atwell’s contract had been stated to be for more than one picture. Considering how Cap will logically have to be put in some form of suspended animation by the end of THE FIRST AVENGER so he can show up in THE AVENGERS, I suspect Atwell will be playing Sharon in subsequent movies to follow the aforementioned “strong family resemblance” conceit. Either that, or she’ll be spending a lot of screen time under pounds of old age make-up.
