Captain America: Beginner's Guide To Peggy & Sharon Carter

For Cap, romance is a tradition.

I’ll put this question out to both the guys and the gals in the Comic Vine community—would it be weird to date an ex-girlfriend’s little sister? How about her niece? What if you were frozen in between the relationships? Would that make it all OK?

Captain America may not have ever had a girlfriend with the kind of notoriety as Lois Lane or Mary Jane Watson, but the Carters might be some of the most unique ladies to ever romance a superhero. Let's find out about who this gun-tottin' Captain America-kissing gal is.

== TEASER ==

PEGGY CARTER

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Cap never actually got to know this Agent 13’s real name during their time together in World War II. She was an American intelligence serving with the French resistance behind enemy lines and thusly had a cover to maintain

—a spy can trust no man, after all. Though they had many adventures on the battlefield, they would be apart for several weeks prior to Cap’s fateful accident near the end of the war. It would be decades before they’d ever see eachother again (the exact number of years will keep getting longer) and their reunion would be a tragic one for the cruel circumstances of Cap’s return. Having been cryogenically frozen during all the intervening time, Cap hadn’t aged a day while she had grown into an elderly woman like all normal human beings do. Cap would at last learn his first love’s real name as she was suffering from Alzheimer’s in assisted living home. Recently, she passed away due to old age, having lived a full, rich life while his was still very much beginning.

Peggy will be played by Hayley Atwell in THE FIRST AVENGER and it looks like she’s been reconceived in a number of ways to better fit into Cap’s origin. She’s still an Allied intelligence officer, but is now a Brit with apparently as many administrational duties as combative ones since she's acting as Steve Rogers’ minder during his participation in Project: Rebirth. Considering that, it looks like she’s been merged with Cindy Glass, Cap’s earlier “first love” who served in the same capacity during THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY and turned out to be a German double-agent. Unless the movie's really going to throw a curve ball at us, I wouldn't go on expecting that particular twist.

SHARON CARTER

Surely many of you have been told that you look like a relative. But have you been told that you’re the absolute spitting image of them?

Soon after Cap thawed from the ice and emerged into the modern world, he rescued a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative from the villainous Batroc and was subsequently startled to find that this “Agent 13” looked exactly like his old girlfriend. It turned out that the woman was, in fact, a niece of Peggy's (originally, her younger sister until continuity’s “sliding timeline” necessitated retcons.) She’d grown up hearing stories from her aunt about all the adventures she had in the war with this legendary man. In time, Sharon would follow Peggy in more respects than from espionage by becoming a professional and romantic partner of Cap's. Consistently working within all the intersecting affairs of secret agents and superheroes, Sharon ascended to directorship of S.H.I.E.L.D. at one point and is currently supervising Cap’s covert strike force of Secret Avengers.

Interestingly enough, Hayley Atwell’s contract had been stated to be for more than one picture. Considering how Cap will logically have to be put in some form of suspended animation by the end of THE FIRST AVENGER so he can show up in THE AVENGERS, I suspect Atwell will be playing Sharon in subsequent movies to follow the aforementioned “strong family resemblance” conceit. Either that, or she’ll be spending a lot of screen time under pounds of old age make-up.

I think it's kinda creepy, and a horrible thing to do. You should never date one of your ex's family members.

A friend of mine dated, and ended up getting married to his ex's little sister. It's even weirder because the older sister set them up.

I'd say considering the circumstances that Steve had to face being frozen and all that that there really should be nothing wrong with him eventually dating Peggy's niece.  After all, she's elderly of body and can't give him what he needs yet Sharon can.  Yes it may seem awkward and one could then say that he should seek love elsewhere, but in the end I suppose that would be Cap's decision and his alone whether he should/should not have Sharon.  I mean yes the circumstances are a lil weird but then again what isn't these days?

Ain't no rules in the pimp game.

Yes, please. Hate the game and not the player.

It's a little awkward but it's not as bad as marrying the clone of your dead wife and having a child with her only to throw that marriage away <cough>scottsummers<cough>.

I wonder if they'll also have Peggy marry Bucky Barnes in the same way the ultimate version of Bucky married Steve's fiancee Gail after the war. As this movie has a lot more Ultimate elements to it than the classic origin I don't see them going with the famous scene of Bucky getting blown up but instead have Bucky survive the war. Since this Bucky is the same age as Steve and Peggy they could get married and Sharon is their granddaughter.

Tom, my man, don't discount the high probability of flashbacks intercut (if not in the Avengers, future Cap solo films)-- that's become an enormous part of Cap's formula, and would especially work in a well crafted film. A character torn between time like Steve is begs to have parallels.

Also, from a business perspective, you want to snag as many films per actor as is economically possible. The fact that they MAY want her in a future film to fill in gaps means it's cheaper to secure her for a multi-picture deal from the start than to have to rehire and possibly renegotiate with her later.

I think, from the commercials they are setting Peggy up to be too good a character to just loose after one movie.  But then again maybe that's the point.  Maybe Cap, and the audience, is meant to get so attached to her that when Cap is frozen and wakes up in modern times we the audience just as much as Captain America are heartbroken when we see that she is old or has died, to really push the idea that Cap is a man out of time with no one and nothing.  But maybe that might be too heavy handed when he is also sad over loosing his best friend Bucky.

I guess we will have to wait and see.  It all depends on the story, if Bucky dies in this movie and Cap is frozen and unfrozen in modern times then it might be too much to also loose Peggy.  But maybe she will also play Sharon.

This is the best thing about Steve Rogers.

Hayley Atwell is hot (especially in Pillars of the Earth).  Had to be said even though it's unnecessary and contributed nothing substantive to the conversation.

Well, if they end up recasting Hayley Atwell as a modern day Sharon Carter...

Ooh la la!

She looks much better in modern clothing anyways!

Spare me.  Only an upright, moral guardian on his high-horse would have standards that high.  It's not like the guy's Superman or Captain Ameriwait-a-minute...

In any case, Sharon was probably born in the 70's, and for all we know Peggy could die in the war or years before Cap is unfrozen.  As the distance between WWII and Cap's unfreezing gets longer, it becomes much less objectionable.  Back when Cap was "first" unfrozen, only 20 years or so had passed and Peggy may have been rightfully peeved that Steve wasn't at least somewhat interested in her...  (More like the first Austen Powers movie with Mimi Rogers, although I doubt there's a straight man alive who wouldn't have tried his luck with Liz Hurley circa 1999).

@jubilee042: I can fully understand.  I look identical to my Grandfather from when he was my age.  I still wear his military trenchcoat (which is still in great condition after 40 years!) and it throws my Grandmother through a loop.

All in all, I can see how it's possible.  I still wouldn't date her, though.

I think it's great!

This just came to me... If they end up having Sharon Carter as a modern day love interest for Cap they could play it this way.

After Steve is revived after 70 years, it's not likely that any of his friends are still alive. I imagine Sharon would be very interested in meeting a man like Steve Rogers. After speaking with him, she would probably sense his loneliness, and reach out to him as a friend at first. I can see them swapping stories of Peggy (whoever she may be to Sharon), and it could lead to something more in time.

That would actually be really cool and give us a way to empathize with Cap but that's probably too sophisticated for Hollwood :/

This article reminds me of The Notebook with the sappy love story.

HAHA, awesome.

I don't see what's the problem here. If Comedian started dating Silk Spectre II (who was his daughter), now that's wrong. But dating the relative of his first girlfriend? Completely OK in my books.

Carters love the Cap! Peggy should've told sharon that if cap returns, don't fall in love with him....

I think it's cute. :-) Sure it'd be a little odd (especially if the girl knew), but I think if it's real love then it won't matter. And Captain's a great guy, he deserves a more permanent relationship

Odd story here, but at my grandma's funeral some years ago, one of my older relatives (whom I did not know) was sure I was someone else.  Turned out to be one of my mother's cousins who is fourty years my elder (people do not grow older in memories it seems).  My brother and I have more than a passing resemblence to several of our family members on her side, while our one cousin looks more like our father than either of us.
So, a niece that is the exact image of an aunt is not as strange as it may seem to many.  However, dating the look-alike of a former flame is still wierd.  Though when you figure the circumstances of the deep freeze and defrosting could make for some wierd psychological damages and gravitating to someone who at least looks familiar (and shares your day-to-day dangers) does make sense in context.  Doesn't make it any less strange, just understandable from his end.  I have no justification for her side of things.
