C2E2: Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi Prepare Sabretooth's Rebirth

The writer that killed off Sabretooth discusses his return and how it will affect Wolverine.

Remember when Sabretooth died? It was back in 2007 in WOLVERINE #55. It was a pretty epic battle and when Sabretooth was under Romulus' control, Wolverine decapitated him, putting a final end to his greatest nemesis. It was a comic book death and many assumed he'd be back right away. It turns out, it took longer than any of us expected.

Now we've seen that Sabretooth has somehow returned. Today at C2E2 in Chicago, Marvel and Jeph Loeb have announced the story that will give us all the answers. "Sabretooth Reborn" taking beginning in WOLVERINE #310 this July. Jeph Loeb will be joined by Simone Bianchi, the artist that killed off Sabretooth with Loeb, in telling the story of how Sabretooth returned to the land of the living and the true repercussions of Romulus' plans. Sabretooth's return is said to ruin Wolverine's life in a big way.

We had the chance to ask Jeph some questions about Sabretooth's return and what how his recent appearance in WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN plays into this story.

Comic Vine: You and Simone Bianchi killed off Sabretooth in WOLVERINE #50. Did you know then that you'd be the one to eventually tell the story of his return? Did you have this story in mind when you killed him or did it develop since his death?

Jeph Loeb: Actually this was always intended to be a two part epic. The original pitch was “EVOLUTION” (Wolverine 50-55) and then someday “REVOLUTION” -- which we never thought was going to be this long after — but in some ways is a good thing. I remember when Ed Brubaker killed Cap how everyone thought he’d be back in six months — but Ed had enough Winter Soldier stories that the book actually got even more interesting without Cap in it.

Sabretooth had done some amazing stories — but Marvel thought it might be cool if we waited to see what so many talented writers like Jason Aaron would do if he wasn’t in the arsenal.

Eventually Simone and my schedule freed up and we could come back to tell “the rest of the story.”

But the real heroes here are EIC Axel Alonso, X-Men Supremo Nick Lowe and our own Editorial Goddess Jeanine Schaefer who stood on the wall all these years and kept the hordes of creators who wanted to bring him back away so that we could tell our story. We’re very grateful for this chance!

== TEASER ==

CV: It seemed Sabretooth simply reappeared recently and your arc is set to explain how. Was there any particular reason this story is being put off until July? Is this story going to take place before his battle with Beast in WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #8?

JL: Yeah...well...sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned. Jason needed him — and we werent’ ready — so it’s a bit cart before the horse — but what he’s doing is wetting folks appetite for what’s to come!

CV: How long is the arc in WOLVERINE going to run?

JL: I’m going to give a Bendis answer (laughs) It should be 4 issues but it might be five!

CV: Do you approach 'resurrection' stories differently than regular ones?

JL: I try and be very respectful to what has come between. He’s been gone a long time, so everything that’s happened to Wolverine, everything that’s gone on with Romulus, Wild Child — the cast of Evolution and then what could’ve been happening — and still be able to tell a story that’s accessible for everyone who hasn’t been reading (all four of you!) since then — so you can pick up a cool Sabretooth story.

CV: You also told the story of how Cable survived in AVENGERS: X-SANCTION. Do you have plans to bring back any other "dead" characters?

JL: Dead is Dead! Why the “dead”? (laughs) I can tell you that Cable and Sabretooth’s paths are very different. I didn’t have anything to do with Cable leaving this realm. So that was a challenge to find a way that made sense which as a time traveler became the keyhole. In this case, we always planned it and it’s very much IN Wolverine 50-55. We actually go back to that exact scene.

As to other characters... hmmm... I do so love writing Gwen Stacy... SPIDER-MAN: BLUE was my love letter to Gwen... Hmm.... (laughs).

CV: What does Sabretooth do in his spare time, when he isn't plotting to kill or make Wolverine's life completely miserable?

JL: You really need to ask? He’s watching Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on Disney XD Sunday mornings at 11AM! (unabashed plug, True Believers!)

Sounds like it will be interesting. Since I just started reading again since stopping in 1997, and deciding to pick up starting about the 2009 issues, guess I will have to check out this little story arc before July.

@DATNIGGA: Read the article before you post a comment.

You know, I may have been a tad ignorant, but I was hoping Sabretooth was going to stay dead so ol' Wolvie could move on from Creed. Jason bringing in new villains I thought was awesome. I can't help but be disappointed with his return, though it won't stop me from reading it lol. Hope it's one hell of a good return, as he had his soul cut into pieces with a sword that should have prevented any possible healing or plausible return.

bout dame time marvel did something right

Hopefully this explains how Wild Child was at Sabretooth's party in Wolverine #304.

Would this have anything to do with the ghost Feral that's appeared in X-Factor? Hopefully we can see the team that was present during the story: Sasquatch, Thornn, Wolfsbane...

creed never should have died to begin with. the day that marvel finally kills that bastich logan it should be at the hands of Victor Creed.

I'm really excited for Sabretooth's return but I really hope they don't screw this up!

However, since The Ultimates 3, Ultimatum and his run on Hulk, I don't think I have too much hope left towards Loeb :(

Looking forward to the art. The writing is yet to be judged.

Sabretooth!!.......thank god your back. Most of Wolverines other enemies are lame

"The writer who killed off Sabertooth" should read: "The writer who thought it would be awesome to have Wolverine be descended from wolf-derived people called the lupines, for Thunderbolt Ross to be a Hulk, and for half the Ultimate universe to be killed off in one fell swoop, too." Granted, people have been able to salvage his messes before, but...good grief.

I admit I was hoping Vic to stay dead so new characters could fill the role as wolverine villians, the creed-logan formula it's done and for me it's really tired to see the whole "I'm going to ruin your life and f*ck up everything you ever loved" angle again... I barely accepted his role in the recent number of Wolverine and The X-men.

Frankly not one of the characters I was wanting to return.

Just what we need another murdering rapist that get's no punishment in comics.

Posted by BatClaw89

Why kill him in the first place. its like killing the Joker or Lex Luthor. they should have at least brought him back sooner.

Good! I've always had a soft-spot for Sabretooth and was disappointed when he was killed off. That being said, I do like how his death was drawn out as it made its impact much more apparent.

I'm pretty sure I reflect everyone else's sentiments in saying that I'm glad that Sabretooth will be making a comeback, but wish a different writer was behind it. It's not that I don't think he can write a good story anymore- I'm sure he still has some of that old spark in him- but it's just that I feel like he's been fairly removed from all the recent happenings with Wolverine.

Jason Aaron should be the one to bring Sabretooth back into the fold.

I didn't miss Sabertooth once. he was overrated and over exposed as Logan's villain. They are tied to close together in the past. If you had Wolverine, Sabertooth wouldn't be far behind, books, tv, movies...he was always around.

I'm tired of different takes on the whole Creed versus Logan front. I feel Loeb is going to mess things up in having Creed wipe the floor with Wolverine. Problem is, Creed has long lost his credibility as Logan's superior in this department. It's done. Dead. Stop trying to reinvent Sabretooth as Wolverine's superior!

Even recently, in Wolverine 301, Logan decimates Creed yet again explaining why it will always be that way. That, in my opinion, should be how the story goes and wish writers would make up their bloody minds (pun intended). So many writers establish that Logan, in a one on one, beats Creed. Yet then this storyline comes out of no where and builds Creed to be just too much for poor ol Logan. I don't buy it anymore. It's tired. If they really want to reinvent Creed, they need to start making him a more vindictive planner and less of a head to head man. They need to have him realize he can't beat Logan mano a mano and have him evolve into a more 'creative' villain.

DAMMIT LOEB!!!!

Always with the rebirths. So where the hell is Sentry?

Posted by royale_with_cheese

Let me guess, variant covers by Loeb's best friend Ed McGuiness? FML. Although, I do admit, Spider-Man Blue was an enjoyable, albeit poignant, read. Just designate Jason Aaron to anything Wolverine related.

Posted by Mister_Sensational

@Super_SoldierXII: Totally agree!

@Dafyd: Damn you make a good point! I keep forgetting it was Loeb who wrote Ultimatum, maybe because I sub-consciously try to block it from memory. Much props go to the writers that have come after and used all of their talents to salvage things from that debacle of a story.

It's like, what the Hell are you doing Loeb? You took Wolverine's arch-nemesis and made him the bitch of a completely new villain who hasn't really even registered in the hearts and minds of the readers! I mean I still find myself asking "Who is Romulus again and why is he such a threat to Wolverine?" I'll check out the story before bashing it, but Loeb better have one helluva story up his butt if he doesn't want to permenately incur the wrath of the Wolverine fanbase.

BTW, After the death of Sabretooth Marvel really should've went with Wolverine's supposed "brother" from Wolverine: The End I think he would've made for a much more interesting new villain than that Romulus guy.

It's been said before and will be said again but doesn't anybody stay dead? While I agree that popular villians make for a good series once they are killed they should stay dead.

Hopefully we get a bit more on dr rot and dog logan before they are sidelined by sabretooth their both villains with potential. One thing i hated about evolution is it contradicted the whole point of sublime being the dominant force behind weapon plus.

Not really fond of this Sabertooth the boss and planer version.

Posted by Primmaster64

*Sigh* Can't dead mean dead?

Posted by Thorion88

@Primmaster64: Unfortunately no. As long as Marvel/DC can make a buck off their character's corpses they'll always return in some form or another.

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Yesssss Creed, welcome back to where you belong! Thanks Loeb for doing so! :)

Jeph Loeb, stop fooling around Marvel and come back to write Selina Kyle. Judd Winick is ruining the character and making her dumb as a post.

Cable, Sabertooth, Loeb's bringing everybody back

Dumb? She survived a freefall from miles up in the air with the aid of nothing but her smarts! I for one am LOVING Winick's Catwoman.

Posted by Aarsilade

Nothing like bringing back a villain who has absolutely no possibility of defeating the hero. Sabertooth is the Washington Generals of the mutant world.

Posted by JamDamage

I'm still waiting for Romulus to come back. I liked him.

Posted by fenixREVOLUTION

We're supposed to preemptively hate this due to Loeb's involvement, right gais?

Posted by kajitatsu

I'm not too interested in the Loebification or Sabretooth on his own anyway.

Posted by AngeTheDude

Jeph Loeb? No thanks.

I knew he would be back :D
