C2E2 2014: Charles Soule and Steve McNiven to Bring 'Death of Wolverine'

Wolverine is going to have "Three Months to Die."

We may be a few hours away from C2E2 officially opening but Marvel has already announced one bit of news set to come out of the convention. Wolverine is going to die.

We've seen characters die before. How will this be different?

Wolverine currently is without his healing factor in the Paul Cornell/Ryan Stegman series. This summer we'll see the 3 Months to Die storyline. This story culminates with a four-issue miniseries called DEATH OF WOLVERINE. The first issue is on sale September 3 and new issues land each week with the last on September 24.

Who is the creative team on this title?

You would think it'd be Cornell and Stegman but miniseries will be written by Charles Soule with art by Steve McNiven.

New Marvel executive editor, Mike Marts, addresses the issue of the overuse of comic book deaths. We will see ramifications throughout the Marvel Universe.

"You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine. That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already."

More information will be revealed Sunday at C2E2 at the Wolverine Panel at 1:15 PM CST.

I really hope he stays dead, at least for a while.

I bet all Wolverine fans are happy that Cornell isn't writing it!

yeah right, like they're gonna kill their biggest cash cow

I'm sticking by my theory that Wolverine will return to life soon after his death. If he dies, his virus dies, which means his healing factor returns, which means it heals him back to life.

BUT if I am wrong

And they ACTUALLY kill Wolverine...HOLY CRAP!

@idontlikebirds: completly agree with this. I like Wolverine to an extent but I think the world can use a break from him, both real life and marbel canon and if done right this story could affect aloy of people.

This sucks I don't want Wolvie to die T.T

Sounds dumb, but how would I know, I don't read Wolverine anything.

Boooo... How lame:

"HEY EVERYBODY WE'RE GONNA KILL WOLVERINE."

"What's the story about?"

"WOLVERINE DYING."

Especially since they can just bring him back.

He'll be back in a couple of months.

yeah right, like they're gonna kill their biggest cash cow

We've seen characters die before. How will this be different?

This will be different because Wolverine is being killed off by a terrible writer that has pretty much already killed everything about the character and has made many Wolverine fans, myself included, drop this comic. Cornell's story hasn't just been "the death of Wolverine", it's been the destruction of everything he ever was as a character.

A better question is, why would Marvel ever hire Cornell to write one of their top titles? I guess no one at Marvel ever read Cornell's Batman and Robin story "The Sum of Her Parts" which was by far the worst modern Batman story I've ever read.

This would piss me off sooo much. Thats like a huge middle finger to the readers. The worst thing is this makes sense and is a potential possibility.

Ok, so "the death of Wolverine" will be written by Charles Soule. He's a good writer, I like his stuff, so maybe I'll buy this but I don't see how he can save us from the terrible story that Cornell has already wrote.

Right after Gabriel Garcia Marquez? How many literary giants can we lose in one year?!?

they ruined him i hope when he comes back they undo all the bullshit they did the last 2 or three years and they give him a good death.

Honestly, I'm somewhat skeptical if they mean Wolverine is going to be "dying" in the physical sense, or if Marvel means that metaphorically, he'll be completely different after this whole fiasco is done with.... I dunno, if he does die, I at least hope he'll be back like in months, and I really hope they won't do a battle of the cowl type thing in regards to whom will be the new Wolverine.

Maybe Sabretooth swaps brains with Logan just before he dies.

The Worthier Wolverine.

Explain to me how any of that is remotely true?

I hope this is legit. It'll be really interesting to see a Marvel Universe without Wolverine for a while. That'd be really cool, actually. I know it won't last super long, but still.

Well, I guess I could see what he's talking about in regards to Cornell more or less making Wolverine become afraid sans healing factor.

he'll be "dead" for at least 8 months. Hopefully they can build X-23 in his absence b/c right now she's just a cameo character in ANXM

You do realize that if someone of importance sees this from marvel, they'll make it happen right?

I dig the creative team. Wonder who's inking McNiven?

Edited by Brione

@jonny_anonymous: Have you read the Wolverine story that Cornell is writing? It's like a parody of the character. He made Wolvy lose his heeling factor (but not get animantium poisoning) and Cornell made him bitch out to Sabertooth. And sooo much other stuff like even how Cornell made Wolvy talk was bad.

Now if you're asking how "Sum of Her Parts" was a terrible story then you obviously haven't read it. The main villian has a huge hole in her head where her brain should be and Cornell wasn't good at all at writting Dick or Damian or any other character in that story.

Posted by Mucklefluga

Soule and McNiven? That's an awesome creative team!

Posted by BR_Havoc

Like this is going to last long. He will die and be brought back in less then 6 months. Personally I find the idea rather silly.

Posted by Scarlet_Spider_Forever

" Death of Wolverin ". Hah yea ok. Even if he does happen to die in the series he will come right back anyhow.

Posted by Maddpanda531

It's really weird that Cornell isn't writing what is essentially the grand finale to the big story he's been telling. Huh.

Every comic character has to die at least once right?

I'm talking current Wolverine and it is very clear you aren't reading it because the stuff you are complaining about has been explained.

Wow, killing off the most iconic X-Man, bold move Marvel, bold move...

I was a long time reader but I dropped it after the all-new-marvel-now! Wolverine #2 because I just couldn't take it anymore. Wolverine is one of my favorite characters but I don't like how Cornell writes. Not to bash the guy personally, I just don't like him as a writer.

What has happened since #2 that would make me change my mind about all this? I'm seriously asking, not being sarcastic.

Knowing Marvel, it will be played off as some play on words. Logan will die and he will be back shortly after.

I actually said this earlier to some people. And at least he'll be back before Rogue.

It's not really bold at all. If he does really die(Which I am unsure of), he'll be back in a few months after some drama.

I love how people take a character death from Marvel seriously. How many characters have actually stayed dead that were iconic? Very few in the 616 universe.

I just hope Wolverine stays dead because he hasn't been that special for the longest time and he is way overused to the point where he became tiresome.

Posted by Arinya

I don't know how to explain how I feel about this...kinda sad...nervous...anxious...I at least hope it's a good read. Wolverine is my favorite character and lately the stories have been a bit lacking so I hope Marvel does this well!

Couldn't that be said for every star superhero like Batman, Superman, etc.?

What's the point? He's too profitable for Marvel to kill off completely, he'll be back in 30 issues or when Hugh Jackman's next Wolverine movie premieres which ever comes first
