Brutally Honest: Moments That Make You Shake Your Head

Don't you just hate that?

No Caption Provided
Part of the reason why so many comic fans feel so attached to certain characters is because they find some characteristic or attribute in them that they find appealing. Some find that they can relate to them and even look up to them. For example, when I look at Wonder Woman, I envision this woman who isn't simply physically powerful- but is empowering to me as a woman. Sometimes it is easier to look up to a fictional character because you are less disappointed by them than you are by an actual person. I mean, let's face it, people can have some pretty high expectations. However, sometimes a character runs into some bad writing- and that's not really their fault.

The biggest shake my head moment in comics definitely goes to Power Girl's appearance in JSA Classified #2. Unfortunately, not even Amanda Conner's incredible art could make this moment easier for me as a fan to accept. In that issue, Power Girl explains to Superman the meaning behind the lack of insignia on her uniform. Her reason being that she simply could not think of anything. Really? She couldn't think of a symbol so she just put a giant hole there? How absolutely and utterly disappointing. Not to mention the way that she compares herself to Superman just totally turned me off as a reader.

More recently, however, was the appearance of Wonder Woman in issue #708 of Superman.
 == TEASER ==
While I can't take any credit for being the first person to notice this particular panel ( I can thank Sue for pointing that out to me), I can't say I wasn't equally as disappointed as so many other readers. If you have been reading Wonder Woman, then you know that the character has not only seemed to have misplaced her costume- but her identity as well.

  Superman #708
 Superman #708
Much like Superman in his current series, both founders of the Justice League seem to be a little lost in their own ongoing books. Superman has been trekking across the United States from city to city in search of himself, and Wonder Woman has been on her own journey of self discovery and understanding, looking for clues about who she is. Decked out in a new costume and without any knowledge of the woman she used to be- Wonder Woman has a whole new identity. In this particular scene, Wonder Woman encounters Superman and tells him that while her sisters have taught her how to be a warrior, that by watching him, Superman has taught her how to be a hero. Okay, given that this is a completely new take on a Wonder Woman with a new identity, I can almost understand where she is coming from. Almost.

No Caption Provided
In a recent issue of Wonder Woman, she did everything she could to save an innocent boy and his single Mother, without Superman's help-  that alone is pretty heroic to me. But putting that fact aside for just a moment, let's look at the panel itself. This incredibly important appearance is vital to Wonder Woman's self discovery and her journey of uncovering her own identity- and like someone pointed out, it happened in Superman's book. She couldn't even realize that she wants to be a hero in her own book.

Finally, why Superman? Lately, Superman seems just as lost as Wonder Woman, so of all heroes to choose from, why look to him and have this epiphany? Wonder Woman is supposed to be this extremely powerful character (both emotionally and physically) so it was rather disappointing to me that she had to look to Superman in order to validate herself. In that sense, this moment which was supposed to have been crucial to her own character development was used as a plot device to propel Superman's character- thus throwing Wonder Woman even further into limbo. What a bummer for Wonder Woman fans, and I am supposed to look up to her as a character, right? And it isn't as though there aren't a plethora of strong female characters that are fully grounded in their identities and aren't completely self aware, either. Look at Oracle, Donna Troy or Power Girl? All of these characters have proven (particularly recently) that they are exceptional role models. I guess it would have been great as a female reader to see the most iconic female character influenced and inspired by another Woman.

Enough of my rant, though, what moments in comics have made you just shake your head?

Cassandra Cain.  That is the biggest screw up in writing I have seen in comics.  It still gets under my skin every time I think about.

" @WDW:  you said "I don't even consider my self a comic fan, "I'm just a Wonder Woman fan.I'd like to get into some other comic but i just can't." and I take it you are a feminist (that's just me assuming things by your comments, so don't be offended because i don't know you personally) and I figured i'd give you a list of comics and females to check out since you seem to be into Women. "

"When I said I wish I could get into other comics" It's just my way of putting my dislike for comics politely as to not offend anyone(I guess I shouldnt have bothered)....I hate comics but I love Wonder Woman and comic book based movies.... Including the animated ones.... atleast the good ones. My favorite is The Dark Knight followed closely by BLADE and Iron man and of course the Wonder Woman animated movie. I will probably like THOR and hate Green Lantern. I know I will like CAPT America just because of Chris EVANS.

I appreciate the help but I should have been clear about my hatred of comics.  Its not so much that I hate comic book stories. I would be lying if I said I hated all comic book stories other than Wonder Woman's.... I just hate them because they are in comic form.... and they are sort of redundant (seen one seen them all)  When it comes to reading comicbooks there can be only one as far as I am concerned and thats Wonder Woman and any comic Wonder Woman guest stars in.

FYI I dont like Wonder Woman because I am a Woman or because she is the most powerful..... I just identify with the comic and character more than any other. I am sure your favorite character is not Batman simply because he is a guy There is more to it than that I am sure.

@WDW: nah, my reason for liking Batman so much, is that he was my first. I got a long box full of Batman/Detective comics when i was like six. So it's more sentimental than any sort of connection with his personality. He is actually very much right wing in his attitude dare I see even Communist or Facist. and I am a Libertarian for the most part. :D

Really, Power Girl? Anyone else find it convenient that the chest is where most superheroes have their symbols. Ironically, the chest itself is the reason anyone outside the comic world would remember Power Girl. That's just wrong.

It's the fact that Superman seems to be the standard of heroism that all other heroes are held to. A previous poster brought the ambivalent Outsiders series. I liked that series during the mid 2000s when I read as a teen. It was interesting and different to see Dick push himself into not amoral, but ambigous territory. He attempted the same kind of tactics that Batman had been using since the first crisis ala No Man's Land and such. Controlling crime while eliminating the other families? I mean he's not "technically" killing them, but still. For Superman to step in and say "You're doing it wrong" reinforces the notion of beware the Superman.

For all his amazing abilities, his principles and image shouldn't be the standard the DC heroes aspire to. Let me clarify something: I like Superman. For all my jaded criticisim, I appreciate him when his ideals prove justifiable and not preachy. Where it really counts in little moments, not where he's walking across America or shitting on characters about their pragmatism or amoral killings. It's like when Ollie killed Promethus in Cry for Justice. I applauded him. He didn't regret it until he realized the the negative effect it had on Mia when she was about to murder that villain. There's a consquence for killing in comics that can be safely explored.

When you have the mentality of "I want to save everyone" It's noble but at the same time what leads to fans like us ranting and debating about "Should he kill or shouldn't he?" Not every hero should be a saint and not every vigilante should be a mass murdering serial killer from the Dark Age. it's the shades of that avenger vs guardian mentality that makes comics interesting.

As for Superman's iconic status, sure we get it. He's one of the first big heroes. And it's cool for alot of heroes to admire him and be inspired by him. I just find it grating when a writer injects their hero worship of any of the Trinity, when it had been previously established that character was inspired by something else.

Batman was inspired by a bat and the vow to never stop waging his crusade against crime. He respects someone like Supes, but he realizes that he's also used as a measuring stick in terms of heroism. I wish I could say the same about Wonder Woman. She's an icon, but honestly she doesn't have that impact as much as she used to have. Still, she's inspired people like Cassie and Artemis, so it balances out.

Through it all, I'm saying that the Big Three serve as one of the inspirations for the newer heroes, but they're not the end all be all measuring stick for heroism.

Some are motivated by fame(Booster-Gold, pre time-travelling) some by vengence(Batman),some by duty(Green Lanterns), and some are motivated by the simple ideal of wanting to save every life, no matter what the consquences maybe (Superman). And it' alot of little factors as well that incorporate into inspiration for heroes.

well i'm not too bothered by the Powergirl or WW thing...doesn't seem like a big idea, i just hate when comics tend to make a hero TOO powerful for example i hated the World War Hulk saga where they had the hulk beat like EVERYONE in the Marvel Universe i mean COME ON, how the hell does he beat Professor x and the ENTIRE Avengers??

Too many to count, I'm afraid. I've actually given up on Marvel and DC after 30+ years of collecting. I love so many of the characters and it's been hard for me to see them written in ways I disdain. (Not that I'm the definitive judge...ok I am. At least as far as my wallet goes)...

Off the top of my head,
Mephisto asking for a marriage instead of a soul and the guy that was once a hero saying Okey Dokey has been at the top of my list.

Syrin losing her child and then running to the bed of Deadpool is a tad jarring

Making the Star Sapphires the "Love" group when their all kind of stalkery and their paragon is called the Predator...

I'm sure there's more but luckily I don't read them...I just read about them on the character bios here and cry in the fetal position on my floor.

@Babs:   So she can't be influenced positively by a man? Why should it even matter anyway?
I don't think what happened in that Superman issue is such a big deal since it's clear that this is young and inexperienced Diana and not the strong, mature and powerful woman (that we all know and love) that you  don't seem to be capable of separating.  Not your fault ^_^

Look, maybe the whole hero influence should have come from a strong woman but it would be a shame if all of her influences and role models were only woman (which they probably all are in cannon anyway). I think having some positive influences from a man helps to show, from an amazon perspective, that men aren't all bad and that they are capable of the same positive values and traits as the Amazons. It kinda goes back to (our) WW's quest to bring harmony and understanding between the Amazon's and mans world (mostly men IMO). These male influences would be proof that this endeavor is possible.

How the hell the country wanted Obama for President and now they act all surprised when they see  his no experience JUNIOR SENATOR ass is failing epic style.  I only bring this up because Obama has been in comics.  You got what you wished for America.  Be proud.  Call Eygpt, maybe they can get him to resign

Batman's death. My dad woke me up at around 6.00am proclaiming that he's dead and he's not even a one off reader. He despises comics, so i was pulled into the dark knights death story. Now normally i'd laugh at bad stories, like sinspast. (Especially that panel of spidey screaming NOOOO!!! after learning of osborns....devious actions.) But the way 'The death of Batman' turned out? Only time i've been genuinely dissapointed. Really put me off DC for a while.

Yes, but did people really buy that argument? And I feel like she belongs now, but her costume is still the same. I would much rather have her say "Hey I have a hole here because I want it there and I can wear whatever I want- I'm a voluptuous woman and I'm proud of that, and I have no problem using my assets to distract you. If you're distracted, don't be mad at me when I've K.O.'d you for the next week." "
I actually find the idea that she chose to "show off her assets to distract" her foes harder to buy - if she did it because she thinks it's sexy and likes it, fine, but as some kind of intentional distraction technique - just sounds silly like a line from a bad superhero-themed porno movie or something.

The idea that she left it blank because she couldn't settle on a logo I could buy.

I totally agree I almost cried when I saw this. It set Spidey back soo much and I dont care how good big time is it cannot make up for this atrocity. I hate Carlie, Vin, Harry and Aunt May they've gone bacl to their teenage selves and it sucks. Aunt Mays death would have propelled Spideys development further and maybe opened up to some new story arcs with MJ and a baby. The least they could have done in my opinion was set up another universe to continue the story without Mephisto and that stupid deal

Wait you're bothered because WW payed tribute to DC's golden boy in a moment he's depressed because he lost many of his race that he recently found out that survived to the destruction of his home planet?

Seriously, that's no reason to be bothered about it, 1st it was always the way DC rolled, Superman is an example to everyone, he might rob a museum alongside batman and leave money in there because they had K exposed, but he's an example to everyone all the time no matter what, I think it was far worse when WW killed Max and she got a lot of hate and even retired from the hero life, really? A born warrior raised for war and combat?
2nd Superman that is always pointed as an example of purity and such, has depowered and right after murdered the 3 depowered Kryptonians with Kriptonite, that's cold blood murder in the spot, but its ok he will always be an example, he did that to stop the permanently depowered Kryptonians from doing more harm in the future, so he doesn't kills the Joker, Luthor or everyone else that is human lvl and he knows the body count they will make in the future will go to unkown number of digits, but 3 Kryptonians reducced to the same lvl need to be killed, and if WW kills Max to prevent Superman from doing harm to others gets greeted with hate, IIRC Bats didn't even talked to her.

And PG like WW is paying her tribute to SM as well, allthough there's a diferent version where she states that the reason of the hole is because it shows what she is, its shows she's a woman and if guys distract themselves looking she's not apologizing for that.
So the way PG found to reveal that she's a woman is getting a huge hole on her suit revealing a good deal of her breasts.

I think my problem with the Powergirl lines are that it doesn't convey what they were meant to. Contextually, they were meant to show how she didn't really know who she was. But that's... not what they convey here. Here they sound like she just couldn't think of anything cool looking enough.

I think maybe it should have been worded more like...  "I wanted to find a symbol that showed people who I was. But I couldn't think of anything that did that."

The fact you think bruce would hit an innocent orphan and say that alone tells me you've been reading too much crap.
RIP batman was shown as the ultimate planner and the incorruptible human spirit.

while you may have your point about Wonder Woman... your point about Power Girl show a lack of your ability to read into what was being said there. She was saying that she wanted to have some emblem, to give something they could look at and derive meaning or hope from... something to FILL the hole that is created when we long for heroes...She couldn't think of anything because she, herself, had that hole in her own thoughts and thus the hole IS an emblem itself.
