Brandon Routh to Play Superhero Again on 'Arrow'

The 'Superman Returns' actor is taking on a new guise.

Things are heating up in Arrow for the third season. We're starting to see more and more familiar faces. It's already been announced that Devon Aoki will play Katana and Peter Stormare will play the new Count Vertigo. TV Line has just announced that Brandon Routh will be visiting Starling City this Fall.

Routh is no stranger to DC Comics characters, having previously appeared as the Man of Steel in Superman Returns. This time, he's taking on a different role. TV Line reports he'll be taking on a recurring role as Ray Palmer. As you may know, Palmer is the hero also known as the Atom.

TV Line describes his role on the show as follows:

An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.

We'll have to wait and see if he puts on a costume on the show.

What do you think about the character and actor coming on the show?

Interesting.

Well I don't think anyone was expecting that.

He'll probably be fine.

I don't mind the Atom, but going from playing Superman to the Atom must me pretty frustrating. I'm sure the show will find a way to make him powerless and costumeless, and a love interest for Felicity of Laurel ^^ Hope I'm wrong though, now that the Flash exists, who knows. We DID have Doctor Light ray gun in Arrow.

pretty cool, cant wait for the 3rd season

I dont have a problem with Katana as long as she doesnt live in Star City. It bothered me that Jean Loring & Kate Spencer were there. That the Lances live there. That Huntress lives there. Obviously it limits showing the character's origin , but still.

As for atom, I get the BS about what characters can & can not be used, but why does it seem like DC is intentionally trying to copy Marvel. They do AntMan, so DC uses Atom. I mean, the Kate Manhunter would be PERFECT for a show. Non/Limited powered heros are better for TV, plus she has a non-sexualized costume that people claim they want on their female hero/villains. Hell, a little bit of "originality" on the part of DC, use the arrow-verse version of Doll girl , have her be Mia's age there could even be some angst between her Mia & Roy, or have her into Sin & she could still use the "Atom" name.

Rather have Liberty Belle though.

why i dislike arrow is that it's going the Christopher Nolan way I know Dc are now so addicted to making all their heroes realistic but can we at least make superheroes and supervillains have Superpowers that will be awesome. THANKS

This is actually a really nice choice.

Nice. Wouldn't have expected Ray to show up in Arrow, but I'm okay with it. Only gripe is that powers seem to be getting more commonplace. I guess we'll see how it turns out.

well at least he's still sporting the Red and Blue even though the roll is rather small lol.

*leaves shamelessly*

Superman Movies(curse of Reeve) are underrated this guy was good and probably will make a better Palmer, he's pretty funny

I first thought that Superman was gonna appear on the show lol

Atom can be interesting!

I always get him confused with James Marsden because of the Singer connection.

So Palmer is the new owner of QC makes sense could make for an interesting adaptation rom a VFX stand point

@_andy_can: have you not watched season 2? It largely drops the Nolan asethtic and morphs it more into an awesome Gritty Camp and introduces people with meta human powers.

That's why they have The Flash coming out.

Well it certainly is a step up from what he's been doing lately. Last I saw him he was in a terrible and offensive sitcom playing a gay stereotype.

Huh, interesting. Can't wait for season 3.

Good for him.

Love The Atom, hope this sparks an on going series.

I'm sure he is being introduced because Marvel is already doing the Ant Man movie. The next obvious thing for Arrow and Flash to do is team up all the superheroes they have on both shows for a Justice League episode. It is weird that they already cast Jean Loring and no reference to Ray Palmer they might want to start being careful with the DC name dropping.

Damn you internet! I got all hyped for Ted Kord.

Good stuff.

So Katana, a NEW?? Count Vertigo and the Atom?

My Spider sense is tingling and predicting another clusterfuck of a season.

He was pretty good on "Chuck."

So sad. He deserves better than the show Arrow.

Hes the best actor by far on the show.

Maybe Routh would finally dig himself out of sh..thole where Superman Returns landed him. Good luck, man…

I haven't had the time (or interest, honestly) to watch any Arrow since the end of season one, but the one thing that did always impress me about the show was that they managed to include minor and obscurer characters in a coherent and unforced manner. That isn't to say that Ray Palmer is that obscure (or that he should be), but it seems like the show will be responsible for redefining another character that comics have kind of forgotten in recent years.

Deathstroke, barry allen? they have superpowers............and the only reason DC is going the realistic way is because of the fact that the DC haters argued it lacked realism, hence the most common argument made by marvel fans.

Pretty lame. I was hoping that description was for Blue Beetle, and Brandon Routh is pretty terrible actor

Cool. I like Routh, he along with Kevin Spacey are the only good things that came out of Superman Returns. Too bad the movie was terrible he was the perfect Clark Kent to me. But while it's awesome he's returning to the DC world, too bad it's on TV and not a movie.

Yeah!! Finally The Atom may get some attention( and hopefully a solo comic series).

Posted by Saint_Wildcard

Breaking the Superman curse. Would have preferred him as an Earth 2 Supe's in the movies

Posted by ALFMutant

Great Scott! The dynamic between Ollie and Ray will be awesome, having the Atom on screen is a little dream for me.

Say what you will about Superman Returns, but I liked Brandon Routh. I'm glad he's stepping back into the Arrow/DCU. The Atom is awesome too. :p

Posted by AmazingWebHead

As long as he doesn't spend his screentime being boring and then getting his ass kicked by henchmen

Posted by Farkam

Routh is like the Lazenby of the live-action Superman franchise. Poor guy.

Edited by _ANDY_CAN

@vinovash1234: ok cool but i would like more superpowered villains. Mostly count vertigo + trick arrows would be awesometacular.

@mrtummytumms: ok but Like i said more superpowered villains.

Lol all of that is in The Flash. Weather Wizard, Zoom, Grodd was hinted at and so on.

Haha that's cool, now please GET WELLING TO BE SUPERMAN!!! He can always be "Arrow's/Flash's" Universe's Superman, just like they got Brandon to play Ray Palmer. Same character, just have it be a "Superman" of a different universe.

Posted by NukeA6

Very nice they're bringing in another DC character but I hope they keep his superhero part.

I'm looking forward to this. Roll on season 3.
