'Blackest Night: Batman' #2 of 3 Reviewed!

Babs takes a look at the latest issue!

The latest issue of 'Blackest Night: Batman' Reviewed!

'Blackest Night: Batman' #2 of 3
Written by: Peter Tomasi
Art by: Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes

I should probably apologize for the delay on the review of this book as I have been a bit under the weather and as a result I've been forced to play a lot of catch-up! I digress, though. This book is great. So great, in fact, that I really wish that it wasn't a mini and was extended to at least five issues! The fact that Tomasi is forced to cram all of that content into a mere three issues may be hindering the story. While it is well organized and the story remains fluid throughout, I feel like a lot of the content is glazed over and that there really isn't a lot of time to delve deeply into any sort of plot or character development. The book is well written, and the art work is really consistent and very good, so it is most certainly worth the purchase!

If you have been reading the series since 'Battle For The Cowl' then you are probably familiar with the quasi fall-out between Tim Drake (former Robin,) and Dick Grayson (former Nightwing). The cool thing about Tomasi's book is that he draws the parallel in the two characters' similarities and utilizes that to bring them to look beyond their differences and work together. I love Tim, so an appearance from him in this series is a lot of fun. The interaction between Damian and Dick in the beginning should also be noted. Tomasi has a certain flair for depicting a very witty and fun interaction between these two characters, which is nice.

Barbara! Is it me or is 'Babs' making all sorts of appearances in the various 'Batman' books? Have I said yet how much I love it? There is an interesting interaction too between Barbara and Dick, and I wonder whether that relationship wil be touched upon in any of the other issues. What do you guys think? Was it me, or was there something there?

Deadman is a fantastic character that really isn't used enough in comics, and it seems to me like Tomasi is having a blast writing this character!

Overall, this is a great issue and I recommend it to anyone who is really interested in the 'Blackest Night' series. It's definitely been a great addition to the overall story!

" I don't understand the complaint about the density at all. A lot happened in the book. Good!I would much prefer 3 issues brimming with action, than say, 6 tedious, drawn-out books. Isn't that what the 27 monthly Batman series are for? "
I guess that's where we are different. I'm a bigger fan of plot development than I am of "WAM! BAM! POW!" ? "
But the first issue was ALL character development. To me, this issue was just evening things out.

I'm with you Babs, i was feeling this book a lot less than you. I didn't like the Tim and Dick interactions and i hate that the black lanterns were nothing but old baggage. If you checked out the green lanterns blackest night books it got even worse. So far 12 year olds wrote this. i hate when i sound bitter, but this is really urking me. feels like this event has been dragging on forever. "
Dragging on forever? It's only been 3 months...

This was a good issue and the part where Tim finally encounters his parents was great I thought. It finally showed a crack in Tims emotional armor. Anyone else get the feel that in #3 Tomasi might actually bring in Thomas and Martha Wayne?

you haven't told any lies. I don't know who half of these dead guys are. I had to keep wikipedia open through a couple of these blackest night books to figure out why the next zombie was crying.

Babs, I hope you get better.
I'm reading Blackest Night: Batman. It's really good. My favourite Gotham Black Lantern is Blockbuster, he's super-smart and super-strong. Like Bane.

You know for everything to come full circle I think they need to kill Talia.Robins are not supposed to have any living parents. How would her death effect him?

all joking aside I too wonder how the heck you kill these black lanterns.I believe there was a panel where it showed one of the black lantern's ring just hangin out after that particular lantern's hand was destroyed...I thought for a second that maybe it would have some kind of effect.I also liked Barbra's portrayal and am diggin me some Deadman(no pun intended).

This has been a good mini-series.  I really liked when Deadman "phased" into Barbara.  I wasn't expecting that.  With the R.I.P. arc to this point in the Bat-world, I have to say that I have grown to respect the whole entire family of characters good, and evil a whole lot more.  Damien has got to be one of my favorite characters in comics right now.  And Peter Tomasi has written the kid really well.  IMO Tim Drake is the most 'like' Batman out of everyone encompassing the cowl, and in this issue, you definitely see that.  While I think that the Superman and Titans mini-series respectively will hold more of an important factor in the entire Blackest Night saga, this is a mini-series you can't pass up.  You're crazy if you do.

Hmmm I see then, well I don't think Tim should feel like he's been replaced since he's becoming his own man now as Red Robin. Just like when Dick became Nightwing.
Thanks for the info.

They resolve the whole 'how to kill a Black Lantern' problem in Blackest Night 3, and the solution is kind of the obvious thing. They also allude to an even more obviouser obvious thing that reminds me of Captain Planet. That's all I'll say about that. Im sure you guys are probably reading it today.

Dick and Tim haven't been getting along since Tim feels replaced by Damian and he is still in denial that Bruce is gone.

I read Geoff Johns say  that Blackest Night takes place at the end of this DCU's "year".

Big events and mini series makes things difficult for even the most skilled writer in big arcs and cross overs. Every book only has so much time before the arc ends. That gives a writer very little time to tell a strong story. You'd like a mini series to have at a minimum of at least five parts, in my opinion; but if you think about it. That's almost half a year if you are speaking about a monthly series. Having a three part story almost feels like riding a short roller coaster and has a single drop. Sure, it may be fun, but it's over quickly and you are left feeling as if, "What, it's over already?".

Burning the bodies seems like a good solution to get rid of the bodies, but that doesn't solve what happens to the rings. Just feels like they could go off and find someone else to inhabit, or worse. Could you imagine if a Black Ring got to Doomsday? Though he never stays dead. He's like Jean Grey, but without the angst or the thunder thighs. (Sorry, channeling my inner Emma there.)

Barbara did look pretty hot in that picture. That almost looks like the "Don't you dare disappoint me!" look. I'll let your imagination create the setting there. lol

I liked this issue, not as good as the first one though. Dick and Damian were awesome and the Oracle was  much better than she was in Batgirl #2.
