Blackest Night: Batman #1; Good Comic Or Cheap Tie-In?

G-Man reviews Batman's involvement in Blackest Night.

When I first saw the solicit for this issue, my impression was that this would be a cheap tie-in for Blackest Night.  That's the problem with the big 'events' in comics.  It's almost like a free license for the publishers to pump out a ton of crossover issues and mini-series to sucker us into buying.  With this Batman mini-series, is that the case?

If you watched the video, you know this was a pleasant surprise.  It may not be 100% crucial to the eight issue Blackest Night mini-series but it was pretty dang good.  It's a different book than issue #2 of Blackest Night and that's okay.  We are seeing some progress in the overall story.  Bottom line, I don't feel it's cheap.

Do you think we'll see more non-powered dead folk being selected by the Black Lantern rings?  What do you think about some of those that have been resurrected in this issue?  Do you think Dick's parents will be a threat?  What about Tim's?  What about Bruce's?  How is this Blackest Night going to end?

I really loved this issue, I was a little unsure about picking this one up at first, but I'm really glad I did. Like you said G-Man, this was a really good Mini/Tie-In, can't wait to see what happens next.

I wonder if anyone else is coming back from the Batman Family/Villains I wonder?
Azrael? Original Black Mask?
Who Knows?

Really Liked seeing Joseph Blackfire being reborn, loved The Cult

Blackfire was a surprise.  Almost as much as seeing the Ventriloquist.

how truly sad is it that i knew who theses guys were by there names

sounds awsome actually.   I've always liked the Scarface concept.  His character has always seemed like the perfect Batman villian in terms of psychosis

Deadman is so cool and shamefully underrated! So original! Plus Lantern Scarface! Priceless.

I just read this and loved it. The quote Dick Grayson said about "were not getting out of this one alive" was  perfect

Just curious--why would Deadman be fooled by the "new" Batman?  Wouldn't he recognize its Dick Grayson as his senses are supernatural and not exactly human?  The Ventrioquist's dummy?  You've got to be sh@tting me.

 OOooooooooOOO I must buy!

I think Dick Grayson was his target to begin with and he was saying Grayson is batman out of sarcasm. I'm not sure about the history with Bruce and Deadman but he and Dick were acquainted (Nightwing 101-106 year one)

Uhm...not trying to give away too much but once he was 'in' him, he knew.  He just found the Batmobile driving along with a dude wearing a batsuit inside and assumed it was Bruce.

lol I did the exact same thing (using the Vine to look up names). In my opinion this issue was every bit, if not better, then Blackest Night #2. I'm still on the fence about Damian though. Its like if anyone besides Morrison writes him, I cant stand him. My favorite part of the book was the ressurection of the (I wont spoil it). But I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do lol.

are you kidding it was so cool especially with the red robin cameo

but i kinda don't see how dick is born in 1920 when the blackest night its set later time period that makes him look like he got some mojo

You kinda have to overlook details like that when it comes to comicbooks....LOL

Good review! I agree 100% with you G-Man I liked it a lot

@G-Man:  I really enjoyed this tie in to the Blackest night event. It really gave the reader a more in depth look on the events that are taking place in Gotham. It also showed the developing relationship with Damian and Dick. These side issues may cost a few more rupees out of the consumers pockets, but they are definitely worth it.

Great review!!
Hope they collect this. If it was 1985, and we were talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths it might be different. I might pick up a crossover or tie in. But anymore I'm more likely to wait for the trade...

Ouch is'nt that like $5 american and I know what you mean i'm buying like 5-8 this month

That's actually a really creepy idea. That these rings will seek out the bodies that they want and will go through literally anything to have them. It's also an interesting way to revive old villains and heroes.

It's also an interesting point about Deadman and his body.

I actually think I remember one of the times Deadman possessed  Batman. Wasn't it YEARS ago, right before that whole story where all the heroes were transformed into children? I think Deadman jumped into Batman's body to try and stop it. I have that issue. I'll have to check.

Blockbuster II, KGBeast, and Deacon Blackfire huh?  Good to have those ones back. >:-D

Just it finished reading it, I had such low hopes for this Tie-in, but enjoyed this more then the GLC Tie-in. The next issue looks to be very promising Dick, Tim, and Damian working together to take down there parents i can hardly wait..

I'm surprised no one's really complained about all the desecration.  I mean we see Bruce's parents.  That seems like it should be off limits.  Then again, what's the rate of skeletal decomposition?  They looked pretty good considering how long they've been buried.

I liked it and the part with all of the villians becoming Black Lanterns really made my jaw drop

Posted by G-Man

What I thought was a little weird is KGBeast is brought back.  Maybe I just didn't pay too much attention because I wasn't really into the story but I thought that story arc in Nightwing had that group stealing the bodies take KGBeast's body and do stuff to it.  Guess it was still intact?

I like how Bruce's father had no hair (as a skeleton should) but his mother mysteriously still had hers....

And cmon. what's with the rate of decomposition? Skeletons are awesome. Case closed.

And actually, I'm pretty sure with proper preservation, bodies actually take much longer to decompose to skeletons, even back then. I could be wrong though.

Now only one thing remains talk my friend into giving me a ride to my comic shop...for free

Posted by G-Man

If he's into comics, you could let him read one or two?  Or maybe you could sing to him while he drives?  Or tell him he'd be the best friend in the world?  Or he'd be your personal superhero?
