Blackest Night #2, The Comic Vine Review

Here's what we thought. What did you think?

Blackest Night #2 is finally here.  It actually didn't feel too long since issue #1.  That's great.  We loved the first issue.  Can the second maintain that momentum?

What did you think?  Did it feel too quick or just right?  Did you notice the difference in the number of pages?  How does this 'event' compare to the others?  Are you buying all the other Blackest Night tie-ins?  Do you still think all these deaths and resurrections are crazy?  Who do you think is coming back from the dead (or getting killed and coming back) next?

@Babs, were you mad? I was just wondering, you seemed mad at the first part of the video

I haven't read it all, I just flipped through it, but I wasn't very impressed from what I saw. I'll be back Fri when I read it.

I'm reviewing Batman Blackest Night tomorrow.  All I'll say is there were some "Holy Crap" moments.

Babs seems upset not angry to me.
Geoff Johns said that only GLC,GL, and Blackest Night are needed to understand everything.
Actually he said that you do only need Blackest Night but GL and GLC would help.

I Enjoyed this issue a lot. I also bought BN: Batman. It was okay.
I was fine with the price. I'm still buying Utopia for $3.99 and it is ehh.
Also, Guy, in Green Lantern Corps. #39, is scanned and shows his emotion as rage. That was interesting.
I agreed with Babs point of view.
Good review.

way too much focus on the Aqua family they should have settled that in another book, I wanted to see what's going on with the Rogues. The Hawk and Dove rise scene was very interesting turn of events.

The best parts about this issue were what occurred with The Specter and what occurred at the Hawk and Dove grave site.
Everything else with Arthur Curry was interesting but nothing progressed the story. By the final page there wasn't anything new to the Blackest Night story besides what I just mentioned.

I agree the art is great! Especially the cover!!! G-Man I agree with you I also felt it was short.

I feel for every heart ripped out it increases the black lantern rings power, the more death the more powerful Black Hand becomes. I really like how Blackest Night is incorporating every superhero and every aspect of DC universe in this series.

I’m guessing it will take all the other lanterns to unite against the black lanterns to defeat them.

By the way if you cant afford $3.99 for an issue, get a job.

Guys check out the head stones of everyone who has become a Black Lantern, it seems like only people who did not have a proper R.I.P. burial became a Black Lantern. I don't have my Blackest Night #1 with me so I cant check it.

I liked this issue. I think events like these you kind of have to expect that not every issue is going to be as amazing as the last, especially when you're comparing the first and second issues. You definitely get the sophomore slump, kinda like what babs was talking about. Sometimes settings things up can make for slightly lackluster issues, but overall it was still a good issue. It was definitely more than enough to keep me interested in the series and keep me coming back.

Can't wait for the review of Blackest Night: Batman...I couldn't afford to get it this week (thanks marvel for making all your ultimates books $3.99. I can't spend all my student loans on comics!)

Hawkman and Hawkgirl were both attacked in issue one and they were feelling Rage and Love

There wasn't a huge amount of plot development but what was there was pretty cool....I mean theBlack Lanterns recruited a really powerful character this issue and I want to see if that's going to matter or not

I'm really happy about the amount of tie-ins...not only are we getting a Blackest Night Teen Titans but we're getting a tie in issue in the regular series as well and with me being as excited as I am about this event that makes me really happy

Babs you said something that I've been feeling for a while now with people always finding something to complain about....I feel like there has been a huge amount of complaining about comics lately on the site but absolutely no praise what-so-ever....it's like people are reading comics just to complain about them....if you aren't enjoying them or you think they cost to much then don't buy them

I was kind of wondering why they had the Bat signal all over the sky in the last Green Lantern issue.

I totally agree with Babs, people are being way too harsh on issue 2 (and it is only #2, after all.)

But regarding the whole Black Lantern emotion-scanning thing, the way I understand it is that the Black Lantern battery charges when they take the heart of someone who's feeling an emotion. That's why Scar said the other Guardians hearts were useless, because they have no emotions. And then when it gets to 100% some great being will awaken or something.... right?

It also happened in #1 before Hawkman and Hawkgirl were attacked. They scanned Hawkman's rage and Hawkgirl's love.

I just finished reviewing this issue and I really didn't like it. The only thing I found interesting was that Dove wasn't brought back and I think it isn't on how the person dies that means they are going to be Black Lanterns because if I remember Aquaman sacrificed himself to save Atlantis. What I am thinking is that it depends on if the person dies with some sort of regret or hostility that makes them come back and as they have been portrayed Dove has always been seen as, not to get all Star Wars on this, but the light side of the Hawk and Dove team. So it may have to do if the person that is dead was a pure hearted person.

But that was the only part of the issue I liked. I think I would have like the issue a lot more if we got to at least see some of the War of Light since we have already seen in the Road to Blackest Night that the war has already started.

This sounds like a Very Good issue as well as the First one... Right now I'm reading the Beginning of Geoff Johns take on the Green Lantern.
G-Man when you were talking about when the Black Lanterns are talking, and how your not sure if thats what they feel or if the Black Lantern ring is just influencing them. I haven't read this yet, but I'm thinking that the answer to your question is probably they may have some kind of feelings like that, but not to the extent of what their saying... And the Black Lantern rings are just increase that emotion by Alot!

Also have you guys (G-Man and Babs) read all of Geoff Johns issues from the beginning to now for Green Lantern, cuz thats what I'm trying to do.

The power meters remind me a bit of what happened in Spawn. How you would see this clock counting down as he used his powers, but this is the opposite of that.

I don't think you can compare these kinds of comics to a "second album". That's completely different. Albums are separate projects. This is more like a chapter in a larger book, and this is only the second real chapter of this particular story. Try imagine taking a book that you love, only getting a chapter a month, then dissecting it. Every chapter can't be exactly the same and with the same feel. I think, as long as at the end. If you want the next chapter. It's a good one.

P.S. Liked the "Public Enemy" shirt. Fight the Power, Babs! lol

Good review. I do have to agree with G-Man's point re: page/price. Going from 40 pages to 24 while keeping a $4+ price (after sales tax) does make me a bit leery, even if I am enjoying the story. After reading some solicitis that IGN posted, I'm also concerned about the fact that this is stretching on into November. It's not like "Dark Reign" over at Marvel, which is just the new status quo for all their books, rather than a big crossover. As consumers, how do you feel about Event Stories seemingly dominating the chronological year?

Finally, after seeing Babs drop the F-bomb, I gotta ask: where do I apply? Have dirty mouth, will travel!

I thought it was an ok issue. I think that the black lanterns see what people are feeling. Perhaps with so many deaths going on, it's a way to see what corp would they be a part of. I hope all I need to read is Blackest Night because I'm only buying half the tie-ins

As for all the aquaman scenes couldn't they just have a BN Aquaman

I liked #2. I kinda feel the same way Babs did about it.

Onto the theories of the Black Lanterns:
I think the way that they detect emotions, is almost their way of seeing. I think it's like they sense that emotion, and then feel the need to extinguish it. It seems the big motive for them is to rid the universe of emotion, because it seems to be the cause of the disorder, in their (or the BL Guardian's) eyes.
With regards to the powering up of the battery, it only seems to happen if the heart of the victim is consumed. That's why there's no powering up for grave robbing, but if the victim is feeling a strong emotion and consumed, the power goes up. Also another reason why the Guardian's "useless hearts" barely gave any power, as "they had abandoned emotion a long time ago."

@FoxxFireArt: No, I agree it's not like how albums get a sophomore slump, but that's not the only way the term can apply. People will undoubtedly compare the 1st and 2nd issues, and it would be really difficult for #2 to match the energy of #1. #1 has to be high energy, it has to grab you and make you want to come back for more. #2 should stil have enough energy to carry the momentum of the first issue (which I think it does), but for some it may not be as spectacular as the first issue. Like what you said about different chapters in books, obviously every chapter isn't going to be awe-inspiring as others, but that doesn't mean it's bad, it's just moving the story along.

I think that this may have been better than the first.  I mean right away, Hal(tossed by Martian manhunter) crashes into the Bat-signal.  It was just more s#!t laid over top of even more devestatingly deadly s#!t.  And the fact that the Black Rings of Death don't discriminate is badass.  Anyone dead can be a Black Lantern.

And the whole power meter that reads out everytime a new Black Lantern rises, I can't wait to see who pops out when it hits 100%.

BN: Bats was totally awesome, as well as this month's GLC.  It was a big week for anyone down with the mainstream of DC.  Blackest Night, Bats, and the Superman U all rocked the spot this week.

I just want to cover a couple of things for the reviewers.

1.) You talked about not understanding the emotions that the heroes were being shown as feeling and how that connected. The Black Lanterns are themselves emotionless. And when looking though their eyes you are seeing the strongest emotion the hero is feeling at the moment. It doesn't connect to their possible inclusion in one of the 7 other corps. (That taken from what Geoff Johns said in his panel appearances at SDCC which can be listened to in their entirety here
http://dccomics.com/sites/events/  )

2.) In the above linked SDCC panels Geoff did say that the Black Lanterns are charging their rings in unison off the emotions in the hearts of those they kill. For Example he points to issue #1 where Scar kills one of the other Guardians and comments on how empty the heart was. The Black is using the power from the Anti-monitor to allow the Black Rings to raise the dead but it needs more power than that to do what it is really after. Geoff equated it to spiders, how they lay their eggs in a kill so when they hatch they feed on that corpse before moving on, The Anti-Monitor is that food.

3.) you both complained about the forward movement in the story with issue #2. It's a 8 issue arc, the second issue should be what it is. A reaction issue to the beginning of the event. We see our heroes confused, off balance, and wondering WTF is going on.

4.) As far as the tie-in's, Geoff said that each one had to be a emotional story. He didn't want them to be just "Oh here is a zombie lets fight it issue" that's why if you look at most of these match ups each one is between people who had close relationships to one extent or another. Like in November we get a Booster Gold tie in, and he is being faced with Black Lantern Ted Kord, the one person in the universe Booster saw as his closest friend. It's going to be a emotional story about how Booster deals with this encounter.  While it will be a company wide event (as shown by the November solicits) The majority of these issues while part of the story won't be absolutely needed to understand the total of the event. I will assume that the 3 issues mini's with Blackest Night tittles will be major tie in's, BN :Superman, BN :Batman, BN :Titans, BN :Flash, BN :JSA, and others will have larger roles in the over all BN event. But the issues from individule series are less importiant to the whole but still a part of it but not manditory.
