Black DC Superheroes with the Best Shot at the Big Screen (And How They Should Get There)

Isn't it time we had more variety on the big screen?

Feature films based on DC Comics have seen varying degrees of success since Richard Donner’s Superman kicked off the modern age of comic book adaptations in 1978. Unfortunately, DC’s wealth of characters has failed to make it to the silver screen in the past 30 years with the same bulk or momentum that Marvel’s superheroes have managed in the past decade, exposing movie-going audiences to not only a criminally small fraction of the DC universe, but also a predictably white one.

Since Batman and Superman have been tasked with carrying most of DC’s box office burden—and the majority of remaining superheroes in their shared universe are white—it stands to reason that whatever upcoming DC movie projects there are will likely lack racially diverse superheroes.

More unfortunate is that Warner Bros. has actually tried giving heroes of color leading roles a couple of times, but both tries ended in disaster. The ‘90s film Steel, based on the story of the black John Henry Irons in the wake of Superman’s death, was plagued with too much camp, cheese and Shaquille O’Neal to be successful. Although the athlete had shown some comedic talent by the time he was up for the action role, O’Neal’s casting was a clear sign of how seriously the audience should take the material before ever setting foot in a theater. With a low budget that also didn’t do the movie any favors, Steel bombed big time and fell into fast obscurity.

== TEASER ==

Catwoman, too, featured a black lead with the casting of Halle Berry, boldly supplanting the white norm of the comics. However, the movie’s other departures from the original stuff—including the name, home, skill-set and associates of the original character—doomed it to a lack of fan support well before other problems offered nails for its coffin.

Obviously, the ethnicities of these characters weren’t inherently responsible for their failures, nor were their films the only duds from DC properties (Jonah Hex, Superman Returns, Green Lantern). Managed correctly, though, some of DC’s black superheroes have enough big-screen potential to warrant the consideration of Warner Bros. Below are the three with the most promise, along with suggestions of how they should be realized on film.

Steel (John Henry Irons)

No Caption Provided

Why He Has Big-Screen Potential:

As mentioned above, Warner Bros. has seen possibility in the character before, and with good reason. John Henry Irons was easily the most grounded and complex superhero to spring from the Death of Superman aftermath, and went on to have a solo comic book during the ‘90s. Although John’s role since has been mostly a supporting one in the Superman books, his presence has endured surprisingly well, as he’s been written into the Justice League’s animated series and comics, emerged front and center during DC’s lauded 52 event, starred in the Infinity Inc. group book as the main character, and even survived the recent DC relaunch to appear in ACTION COMICS. Overall, something about John’s appeal has engaged writers and fans alike for almost 20 years.

How His Film Treatment Could Work:

No Caption Provided

A new Steel movie would undeniably necessitate a start-from-scratch reboot, but there are a few aspects of the original film that should remain intact. Like the first flick, a new take should ax the comic book origin story that saw John finding inspiration from Superman. This John’s adventures should feel fully self-sufficient, and while a hint or two at a shared universe with Superman is fine, the audience should believe that he’s a hero entirely of his own making. Another approach that the first film got right was the attention it paid to inner city gangs; when the weapons John invented for military use find their way into his own neighborhood and threaten the youths there, John’s story becomes a compelling tale of desperate redemption, as well as one of potentially biting social consciousness.

However, a new film could benefit from taking itself far more seriously than the first one did. In the comics, a drive-by shooting kills two kids in front of John and critically injures him before he ever puts on a cape, establishing an atmosphere of tragic brutality that the original movie never explored. If a new film fully embraced the gritty nuances of John’s hometown slum, as well as the emotional damage and complex dangers it presents to him and his loved ones, his story could have extraordinary resonance in a way other superhero fare hasn’t tried. Moreover, an adaptation positing that even a man in a suit of technologically advanced armor is still an underdog—considering the cycles of gang violence, poverty and racial oppression he’s up against—would set a Steel movie apart from Iron Man territory, and could even set a precedent for a new kind of superhero movie.

Green Lantern (John Stewart)

No Caption Provided

Why He Has Big-Screen Potential:

John Stewart, an African-American Green Lantern, has skyrocketed in popularity due to the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series on Cartoon Network. Originally recruited in the comics as a backup for the more popular, and white, Hal Jordan, John has come into his own as a hero just as autonomous and legitimate in pop culture. Well before the Green Lantern movie opted for Hal as its protagonist, a nearly-made Justice League feature film would have starred Common as John Stewart. Regardless, John still has a prominent role in the Green Lantern comic books, and has shown up on Cartoon Network’s current Young Justice series.

How His Film Treatment Could Work:

Since Warner Bros. is committed to making direct sequels to the Green Lantern film from this summer, it’s clear that Hal Jordan will continue to be the series’ protagonist. But that doesn’t mean John Stewart can’t have a principal role. Much like James Rhodes’ part increased alongside Tony Stark’s in the Iron Man films, the Green Lantern movies could use John Stewart as a friend/foe whose methods and mentality generate friction with Hal before a true partnership blossoms.

A scenario as simple as John temporarily inheriting the Green Lantern ring after Hal seems mortally wounded could easily bring the character into a sequel. Once Hal recovers, but John proves his unexpected worth as a Lantern, the stage would be set for the two to compete for the privilege of the ring—until an adversary requiring their combined efforts forces them to come to their senses. Given Hal’s struggle with responsibility from the first film, a rival with the serious demeanor and iron will John Stewart is known for could make him the prefect foil—especially given how badly Hal needs a compelling conflict for the Green Lantern movies to continue.

Static (Virgil Hawkins)

No Caption Provided

Why He Has Big-Screen Potential:

2000’s animated program Static Shock, which lasted an impressive four seasons, introduced the Milestone Comics character to millions of young viewers and indelibly marked the superhero’s place in pop consciousness. Static now has his own comic book series in DC Comics proper, and has appeared on Justice League Unlimited.

How His Film Treatment Could Work:

Very simply, a movie adaptation of the Static Shock comic should stay true to source material. Virgil Hawkins’ success on screen need not be much of a riddle given his relatability; his spunky sense of humor, academic pressures, teenage outlook and secret identity woes provide ample possibility for a compelling hero, and his similarities with the successful Spider-Man character are no accident. Virgil’s TV show proved that he has the personality—and enough interesting enemies on top of it—to keep his story exciting and entertaining should he ever get the live-action try.

No Caption Provided

These suggestions aren’t the final word on black superheroes who deserve to be on the silver screen, but they’re probably the ones with the biggest chances of being considered. And with a film industry that’s playing it safer than ever, these three have the built-in fanbases that would make them the “least risky” minorities to take on.

While black heroes like Mr. Terrific and Batwing have their own comic books, and characters like Cyborg and Aqualad have gathered impressive buzz on television, few have seen enough spotlight and “push” like Steel, John Stewart and Static to invite bated breath.

That’s not even to mention DC’s female black superheroes, whose presence altogether in comics is so negligible that chances of prominent film roles for them anytime soon are slim to none.

Likewise, superheroes of color who aren’t black are also regrettably hard to come by. While talks about TV shows for characters like Jaime Reyes and Renee Montoya surface from time to time, their big-screen debuts still look like distant prospects. Overall, DC’s minority characters of either sex face some serious barriers in number and attention that preclude much Hollywood dreaming.

@Loki2u he said DC neither one of those two are DC. However as sad is it is and being realistic i just dont realy see it happening to be honest John stewart is underused even since being popular. i dont remeber hearing not one thing about him in brightest day/blackest night. Even though John is a great GL and probably one of the most powerful he gets set bac and Static shouldnt get a movie until he gets a better story n writer for his book and since he's a kid it only makes sense that he shouldnt b able to control his power id like to see that too ad some upgraded powers sometime soon maybe some traing from Black Lightning as well

John Stewart does not even need a mask for his movie, unlike all the money they spent on Hal's mask for the movie.

I think instead of going green... They should bring someone to the screen like Photon or Luke Cage. Maybe even Goliath. Just a thought... no comment on the racism issue in comics. I think they touch on it enough with mutants being outcasts and all.

John Stewart is my favorite Green Lantern and my favorite black DC superhero, although Static is a close second.

On the Marvel side of things it's hard to argue with Luke Cage, but really that's only if I ignore Storm because I think of her more as a team member than as a standalone hero. Still, she's popular as hell. If they did a film of the time when Storm lost her powers, went punk, and started cutting people up for getting in her face then I think they'd have a solo movie there.

I'm a high school art teacher at an all boys school just outside of new york city. My students were born in the early to mid 1990's. I do a short lesson on comic books, and due to the justice league cartoon my students just assume that Jon Stewart is the only green lantern. In fact when the movie came out over the summer many of them complained that they felt like it was racist that they made green lantern white. They have no concept of hal jordan, hell they don't even realize that there is more then 1 green lantern in the universe.

i am sick of politically correct people who try to influence companies to do what they want them to. for instance, lobdell and that annoying girl at the comic convetion who kept trying to make dc see that they did not have enough roles with leading women. in both of the mentioned cases, i like what is being deliveder by dc. just let them do there job. when you get a company, you can make what every sucks politicaly correct notiont that crosses your mind!

As a black man and long time comic book fan/reader I find it interesting (or rather disturbing) when discussions of which superheroes of other races (not just black) deserve to get some screen time there are always several comments from individuals advocating why they should not. I mean don't get me wrong I also believe something like a Wonder Woman film is long overdue and that's where DC and Warner Bros. should focus their attention next but the focus of THIS particular thread is DC's black heroes.

I also believe that the GL movie needed to start with Hal Jordan in order to lay the ground work, but they could have established John as also being apart of that world like the Iron Man films did with Rhodey, and as someone already pointed out because of the JL and JLU animated series he is already a recognizable character and because of this his presence in the film was missed by a lot of people.

The broader point of this is that in the DC movie universe (however lacking it may be) african-americans are a super minority with practically no pressence as main characters and this thread simply suggest ways they can address this, by means of bringing some of it's more well known black characters to the big screen.

strictly keeping it dc i'd have to say that mr. terrific would be terrible. the character is just not good. steel is okay but i wouldn't want to sit through another movie about him, no matter its context.

batwing would be crazy if it didn't have such clear ties to batman (a point well made in regards to what was said in terms of steel to superman). the setting alone would make it such a stand out. also the character is still so new that there isn't enough proof that he himself could hold the attention of audience-goes for 90 minutes or more.

now, john stewart would make for a decent green lantern movie. if only they wouldn't stick him in an awful costume like the actual turned out to be.

static, though not a real standout character to me, would make for a pretty interesting movie. especially if they somehow got donald glover to be him (can't be spider-man, but could definitely rock static.)

but right there would be my biggest concern; who would get these roles. this will be the only time i bring up marvel movies because i think they've done some poor casting in a few of their films. for war machine they had terrence howard and then they had don cheadle who neither would never fit the role, whatsoever. if they got the casting right for stewart, i think they'd definitely have more promise for a good green lantern movie on their hands.

@cattlebattle: you make a very good point there. hadn't even considered that. it would be cool if they just went to John in the second film but Im sure they wont. Bet there are quite a few younger folks and kids who said to themselves "I thought GL was a black guy" when they saw the movie.

no matter what, DC or MARVEL, the one black hero that 110% deserves a movie is non other than Black Panther, he was the first mainstream african american superhero, he was on the avengers and FF AND you cant escape the fact his backstory is fricken badass and awesome, i would be first in line to see that

for me Hal Jordan was deffinetly the best option for the GL movie, why? he was the first human GL, he has the best GL origin and greatest moments, other than Rayner, and yes this generation knows John Stewart because of the JLA show, but apart from his background in the army, hes quite a boring character. Yet although im all for the diversity, i still think aquaman and the flash need a movie before any B/C list characters get a movie, because they IMO are the greatest DC characters that havent yet recieved a movie,my only wish would be that Christopher Nowlan takes over every single DC movie from now on and make it Dark Knight style, so then DC would finally get some good movies

@scifi_superstar: I don't think it's politically correct for those that buy and read comics to want to see themselves represented within them. Peter Parker was such a ground breaking character because, for hte first time, the hero reflected the very kids who were buying the comic. I think that it's only fair for massive corporations like DC and Marvel (owned by Warner and Disney let's not forget) to repay their fan base and mature enough to represent ALL walks of life in their books. After all, it's us who pay for them and it is us who keeps them in business. I'm glad you like what DC are doing with their comics. I'm also glad that you obviously feel represented. Not all of us have that privilege.

Well the most popular black heroes, dc wise are John Stewart, Static, and Cyborg. Although Static has the best chance in my opinion since his powers are pretty cool and he not the black version of another hero. Virgil also has the teen thing going for him and his own set of enemies. Sure Black Lighting is like an older version of him, but no one really knows who that is other than fans. Green Lantern-John Stewart can definately be a better movie than the Ryan Reynolds one by a long shot. They can do his whole life as a marine and then becoming a Gl and even fight some one like Sinestro. Cyborg, he would only be good if they make a Teen Titans movie. Marvel already has guys doing the whole cyber powers thing Iron man and War Machine. Plus his past isn't even kinda intersting compared to people without movies on the big screen like other Titans or the JL. Cyborg can't win this one unfortunately.

You make pretty good points, But I must disagree on your version of the Steel movie. I believe Superman is iconic, and even a small cameo in the beginning(and obvious Trailer material) would pull an audience towards him. I still think you should see his dark past, Which makes even more reason Why him Seeing Superman would defiantly make sense as inspiration, Instead of the reason that "Weapons are Bad". Plus We would finally get a gritty "Superman" film, without ruining Superman. As for John Stewart, I think They should make him a side character In the next film, and If they go through with the Parallax possession, He could be made a Lantern (Maybe alongside Kyle, but that's debatable), To stand up in his absence, and Maybe even get an awesome fight scene between them.

Steel or Mr. Terrific because their characters are more obscure and i feel that it would draw peoples attention, " Why is this many wearing the S shield on his chest, why is he a 'man of steel?' I think those are good lead ins that would get peoples attention. Mr Terrific is the same, "Why does he have this T on his face?" "Whats so cool about him?" they have the curiosity appeal and i feel that it could be a really big hook as well as the fact that they are black. I don't really realize that so much when I'm reading but people who don't read comics might find that to also be a hook. Really what it boils down to is: "WHAT DO THEY STAND FOR, WHAT MAKES THEM HEROES?" It just needs to be done by a good director and Actors who actually look close to the characters in the material, and it should be written by people who write them too. I think if it weren't that emphasis would fall on their race rather then their talents.

I know nobody will agree with me...but Black Lightning, despite what his name would make you think, would be pretty nea.

In fact, a more-or-less faithful adaptation of his Year One graphic novel could work and be pretty fun to watch in live action.

(Static would be my second option)

I always felt like Blade and Spawn would be the only black 'superheroes' who could actually keep a movie running. Most of the others are just lame, no offense! I don't know about Luke Cage. He could also work, but it wouldn't be anything new at all! It's not about being black, it's about being a 'great' character with the background and the purpose!

And this why I think John Stewart would have been a better choice for the film. Or do it like GL Corps is now with John and Gardner as a space opera (as it should have been)

Couldn't agree more, and really well articulated. Maybe they could do a sequel to this years Green Lantern by having Hal in a supporting role and John Stewart as the main character, and then you know as a sequel to that do the same with Guy. Hope to see you writing more articles, this and Sara's are the best on this site.

John Stewart is the Lantern most featured over the past 20 years, the Hal Jordan usage was epic fail.

@ Perry_411- are you serious? Black Panther (Djimon Honsou please), Storm, Luke Cage, Blade, Isaiah Bradley (Black Captain America), Elijah Bradley (Patriot), Falcon, Monica Rambeau (Formerly Captain marvel, Photon) to name a few. But the best suited are Panther, Blade (again), and Cage

I shall rue the day Luke Cage ever gets into a movie, no doubt he will. Bishop in the next X-men film would be good. A well done Spawn film I'm sure is overdue and constantly rumoured. War Machine/James Rhodes has shared the limelight somewhat, if anything not enough.

Will say the GL failure will keep Steward out of any solo projects for the time being, could still appear in a JL flick if DC ever gets that rolling, and Steward is the one of the three I'd like the most to see on the big screen. Holt comes in as a second...Steel I think will suffer from his first movie and how easy it is to compare him to Iron Man.

Great article, now let's see one for Marvel. But seriously I'd love to see a Stitc Shock live action film. Stewart should definitely be in a GL sequel, and have him on Earth with Hal in space. And Steel should be written exatly as described, a gritty urban piece, with some milatry/corporate epsionage conspiracy. Make it so he worked for a company that was creating weapons secretly and using his designs, and when the weapons hit the streets for "testing" he's caught up in it and makes the armor to stop them. Mr. terrific would actually be pretty cool as an inner city Batman-esque type of film.

BLACK LIGHTNING!!! And not the 'Year One' version from a couple of years ago.

The original Tony Isabella series would be a GREAT screen version.

Jefferson Pierce, new teacher, divorced, powers from the belt. It is the PERFECT base for a film.
