Big Change to Flash's Role in 'Arrow' [Update]

Barry Allen will still appear, but apparently we won't see him wearing the red and yellow costume... at least not yet.

We all know Barry Allen will soon appear in CW's Arrow and will be played by Grant Gustin. Originally, the plan was to introduce and use the famous character in three episodes and have it lead into his own spinoff show. However, according to Deadline, it's looking like there's a slight change of plans. Allen will still appear in episodes eight and nine of Oliver's show, but instead of stepping into his famous costume in episode twenty, the superhero will make his proper debut in his very own pilot.

No Caption Provided

We'll still see Barry's origin in episodes eight and nine, but it looks like they're saving his superhero debut for his own pilot. Why? Likely so it can receive more focus and room to develop. Allen's pilot is being developed by Arrow co-creators Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti as well as Geoff Johns and David Nutter. According to Deadline, it's currently unclear whether episode twenty will still incorporate Allen. As for how the Central City character will end up in Oliver's world, it turns out Allen will travel to Starling City to investigate some unexplained robberies which could have a link to his past.

Do you think this is wise move on their part, Viners? Let us know below.

Source: Deadline

Update

The CW has released an image of Grant Gustin as Barry Allen from the December 4 episode, "The Scientist."

No Caption Provided

Here's the official synopsis:

A seemingly impossible robbery at Queen Consolidated's Applied Sciences Division brings Central City police scientist Barry Allen (guest star Grant Gustin) to town. Citing a similar case back home, Barry offers to help Oliver (Stephen Amell) and team with the investigation. Oliver senses there is more to Barry than meets the eye, but he's distracted by the similarities between this current case and something that happened on the island. Meanwhile, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) takes a liking to Barry, which doesn't go unnoticed by Oliver. Sin (guest star Bex Taylor-Klaus) asks Roy (Colton Haynes) for help when a friend of hers goes missing. Roy is surprised when Thea (Willa Holland) not only encourages him to help, but joins the search. Unfortunately, Sin's friend is connected to Brother Blood (guest star Kevin Alejandro), and their search ultimately gets one of them seriously injured.

Once again, they manage to exclude super powers from the Arrow world. Whatever. Still a great show and only a minor change. Still don't think Grant Gustin should play Barry though...

I like it.

It shows they have great confidence in their story, their cast and their direction. And that bodes well.

That is a good sign of faith in what they have seen from Grant. All this talk about Johns and his love of Cyborg on the other thread related to Johns make me wonder if Vic will be the Chloe Sullivan or Green Arrow (Bandit) on this show. S.T.A.R. Labs could help build a cosmic treadmill... They could even develop Flash's costume. I am looking forward to this show to see what the creators can pull off.

Maybe Nightwing will pop up if he is indeed showing up on Arrow. If time travel is used, maybe we will see Max Mercury, XS, Booster Gold, Rip Hunter, Goldstar, or Jay Garrick from another universe.

I actually really like this idea. I'm still behind on Arrow so I'd hate to have to watch Flash's origin in Arrow to catch up on his story in his own show.

God if they try and make it to where barry doesn't have super speed but instead he's just "super duper fast" or something stupid like that, all my hope will be lost for anything that arrow puts out in the future. There are only so many characters in the dcu that can be changed to not have superpowers

According to this (and I'm not saying its 100% true), the pilot is pushed back to 2014. They're being careful because the NBC WW pilot was garbage.

@fallschirmjager: Might be same universe but by getting his powers in his own Pilot it's easier to look at it as separate universes for those who don't want to mix. There are ways to do a good crossover without bringing those powers to the GA show and that is only if they do one.

I can't wait to see the whole Rogues gang. I wonder if they'll go with biological powers as a kind of foil to Barry, or tech weapons. Either way, I'm interested.

I am slightly concerned that DC/WB have no idea what they are doing as far as a larger shared universe. I highly doubt they will have this kid appear in JL when that finally comes out and they seem to just be licensing shows to various networks with zero connectivity in mind. I think this, specifically, is a good move to get people curious in The Flash show without giving them everything in Arrow. It makes sense to tease him a little and then give the full reveal in The Flash.

In fact, they know exactly what they're doing because they're not mixing the TV show and movies - which is a terrible idea.

The second you do that, you immediately handcuff both TV and movies and limit what the other can do so you don't screw up continuity.

Moreover Arrow all ready has 1 full season of history that would either have to be incorporated or ignored. And vice versa for Man of Steel. We don't need people on Arrow dropping hints about the Kryptonian invasion every 5 seconds.

I don't really get why people think TV/Movie crossover is a good idea. It makes no sense from a story telling or monetary perspective.

Unsure about this, then again I really don't like Arrow. But on the plus side it'll give non-comic/animation fans exposure to The Flash/Barry Allen.

I am guessing, as I am sure many others have, that the particle accelerator that keeps getting mentioned in news clips during the show is what is going to trigger Barry Allens powers. I don't think they can, or will go down the technology route like they did with Black Canary.

The question remains will they continue to have the explosion (or accident) in Arrow and then have The Flash segway from that in the pilot, i.e. Oliver goes back to Starling City and the show follows him and the Flash pilot picks up with Barry? Or do they leave the explosion to the Flash pilot and have Oliver appear in it to set up the connection to the two shows?

Its a bit silly to judge a guy just for how he looks. Wait and see how it plays out until you decide whether its going to be good or not.

To do so before hand is just close minded.

This show could be on for 10 years, guys. We can't have a Flash in his mid-40s.

Also, I've seen younger looking professionals. Maybe it's because I'm just out of undergrad. Let's see him actually act.

O that cover is so great and hopefully they eventually do something like that.

A straight up regular pilot is a smart move and one that saves time. They were going to have to make a first episode any way, one that would likely recap whatever the plan for episode 20 was and do some more stuff but with out the budget for a pilot.

Still haven't seen anything Gunderson has done so who knows maybe he's utter crap - than again I did think Amell looked like yet another CW pretty boy (he is) but he can act. So we'll see.

Well to be fair, as someone who LOVES Wonder Woman: Flash, Green Arrow, and most other heroes have easier origins than Wonder Woman. Every other hero in the GLA with the exception of Green Lantern either is out of their element (Superman away from Krypton) or has an origin based easily on the real world. On the other hand making a Wonder Woman show requires either dropping her back story (PLEASE NO!) or potentially having it come off like a bad Xena remake. Diana certainly deserves a series or movie; but it is the most difficult of all the characters.
