Beware the Batman "Allies" Discussion

Gordon's daughter is kidnapped and it's up to Batman to find her.

Beware the Batman continues to win me over. The latest episode, "Allies," dives further into Batman's connection to Gordon and has more than a few moments that are sure to make fans smile. In this episode, Tobias Whale is finally caught, but the villain's lawyer says Gotham PD has one deal: free Whale or else. Obviously they laugh it off and that "or else" turns out to be the bad guys kidnapping Gordon's daughter, Barbara.

What makes this episode great is it finally pushes forward the relationship between the Dark Knight and the Lieutenant. Sure, Gordon knows Batman is fighting for the good guys, but he's still a vigilante and up until now, it seems to always boil down to, "I know you're against the bad guys, but you're not following the law! You're under arrest! ...wait, where'd you go?" With Gordon's daughter on the line, he finally realizes someone like Batman is required in a world with so many twisted villains. He says he just needs to ally with him on this one occasion, but it's safe to say we all realize he knows better and just doesn't want to admit it yet. This relationship's progression also brings about the creative invention of the Bat-signal and delivers a moment which is sure to remind people of The Dark Knight. Additionally, Barbara gets more time to shine and show off her passion for the world of crime fighting. The ending is downright adorable and finally gives a nice little nod to her role in the comics as well.

It's nice to see Batman so cautious when it comes to having a teammate. Obviously it differs from the comics (a well-trained kid running around with me? Sure! Why not?!), but it makes sense in this world. Despite seeing she can indeed hold her own fairly well in the field, suddenly becoming responsible for another life in such dangerous scenarios surely isn't an easy transition. This was cutely illustrated when we saw Katana's first "costume" and how that scene pointed out if she's going out there with Batman, he's making sure she's not getting hurt. Clearly, this was just there for laughs and it worked.

This show is definitely growing on me, but I do have some small gripes with this episode. Seeing Gordon act like a total boss with that firearm was a super cool moment, but then he stands around like a fool and is totally useless when everything hits the fan. If he can sense a laser sight on his back and react before the person can pull the trigger, it's tough to believe he'll react like a slug when a guy starts throwing around fireballs of death.

Like I said, the show usually nails it when it comes to Batman's intellect, and they've been doing a much better job with his hand-to-hand abilities, but what's with him just walking down the middle of the street in enemy territory? Surely a man that well-trained and tactical would take to the rooftops or shadows, yes? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the ensuing fight scene (the windshield shot was satisfying), but he apparently didn't even have a plan for, "What do I do if they have guns?"

Minor gripes aside, "Allies" is yet another episode that shows Beware the Batman has a whole lot of potential. Sure, the villain wasn't all that grand, but it did a superb job moving forward the relationships between characters and was definitely very entertaining in the process.

I really disliked how quickly Tobias Whale was taken down, you'd think the biggest mob boss in Gotham City would be more careful. And what they did with Matches Malone was just horrible!

I'm not watching this show

Batman broke a dude's leg. And they clearly showed the leg break.

The show won me over with that.

That was Milo Match/Phosphorus Rex, not Matches Malone.

Oh, the names sounded similar so I got them mixed up.

When is Black Lightning showing up? Tobias Whale is his villain after all.

Can't complain with comeptent and fun establishin of the mythic side of Batman. That's what this epiosde set out to do and that's what it did. I'd love a Gordon/Kurtwood SMith centric episode. Also forget Batgirl keep Babs as the meta commentator of this series.

Also nice call back to Kato with Katana's costume.

Great episode.

It's alright so far. Watched some episodes on and off.

Why does Batman being super cautious regarding having a highly trained individual for a teammate in "this world" make sense? I ask, because as far as the dangers facing heroes in the BtB world, they don't seem to deviate too much from the comics.

This show is slowly winning me over

This was a great episode. Sadly, I can see WB & CN axing it like they did Green Lantern & Young Justice, they'll cook up a lame excuse like the GLTAS merch (that doesn't exist) not selling well enough. That still burns me....

Beware the Batman episodes are either hit or miss this was definitely a hit.

The producers of this show actually wanted to do a Batman/Superman team-up show at first.

I thought this episode was good in story, but the voice acting seemed really forced. This it's cool to see that major super powers will be used throughout the series as show by Phosphorous Jack (or w/e the heck his name was) it'll be interesting to see whoelse and what other powers they will use.

Barbara was plenty of fun in this episode. I enjoyed her taunting Phosphorous and her fangirling over Batman and Katana. I'd like it if she took on an Oracle-type role at some point in the series.

And I enjoyed the developing relationships between Batman and Gordon.

Aside for that, not much to comment on. I dislike Katana's hero design (just a domino mask? They can do better than that). The voice acting varies from mediocre to cringe-worthy on different occasions. The episode itself wasn't amazing but it was far more memorable than any episode of this show we've seen to date. If BtB continues to bring its quality up each episode, then this may earn a place with the DCAU and YJ in my heart someday.

Am I the only person that wants Jim Gordon (aka Kurtwood Smith (aka Red Forman from That 70's Show)) to call someone a dumbass? Because that should really be a thing. Even though it is a kid's show...

Beware the Batman is getting better and better with each episode. I'm glad that it's proving me wrong as I didn't know what to expect at all prior to the premiere episode. I had a huge smile on my face seeing Gordon and Batman atop the rooftop, sitting beside the Bat-signal. A nice foreshadowing of future events and the humour was well played here, not to mention and stressed companionship between Bruce and Katana out in the field.

Great review Gregg!

@deranged_midget: I just don't get why Batman is treating Katana like a new Robin, she's an experienced fighter, she doesn't need to be grounded in the Batcave.

Posted by Deranged Midget

@the_stegman: Has there ever been a Robin in this universe yet? Seems pretty clear that this is a relatively younger Bruce with less experience in his career. I feel like he's proven he knows almost all there is to Katana but he's just trying to keep her out of harms way.

@deranged_midget: Nah, no Robins yet, I just think it's odd that Bruce is treating her, a ninja, like an inexperienced child.

I wouldn't say an inexperienced child, perhaps just trying to teach her that she isn't invincible considering how brash and arrogant she's acted previously. Additionally, it could also be out of respect to Alfred.

I'm liking things so far but yeah, so fat Batman the tactician/strategist is seriously lacking in some of his decisions he's making in the show.

I could understand that, though if I were him I'd have her by my side in the streets, not under house arrest, though I suppose she had to earn his approval like she did, so in the end it worked out for the best. It ain't easy getting Batman to be impressed by you.

If there's no Robins yet weird the mask come from? Remember Bruce's cowl is a 1-piece

Perhaps a prototype from his early days? Maybe he wore it on his first night out.

I really like Katana's character and the rubber bomb suit thing was awesome! But I have to agree shes basically fighting crime in Motorcycle outfit, the shows creator can do A LOT better than this. I am hoping this was a prototype suit and she get something more tactical and protective then her normal Gear.

Also I want to mention how Awesome it was seeing Batman not only kick a guy across a room but said guy HIT A WAREHOUSE SIZED METAL SHUTTER bring that down as well making the guy still flies a bit!! I am not sure a Human being with no powers should be able to do that but that was amazing, I think Spider-man would have trouble doing that!

Katana's character is okay. I like her snarky attitude. But I think the show might have benefitted if they'd made her either a bit darker or a bit crazier. She'd feel like less of a Robin/Batgirl substitute and more like her own sort of character if they'd taken her in a bit more of an extreme direction.

The scene with the rubber bomb suit was pretty funny. But I'm not liking the domino mask. I agree that she looks she's just wearing a motorcycle outfit. Also, I wish she used the soultaker sword in combat. Not to actually take souls but just to keep an eye on it...then again, the sword does look rather ridiculous here. I don't know whose decision it was to make it green, smh.

Action scenes are pretty good for the most part, though.

dumbest episode. you can tear to shreds everything in it. within the 5 minutes mark. why did batman put her that stupid suit if he testing her all along to see if she's capable fighter and prooved so? why let her go out with only a domino mask easily recognisable? why no special suit like his for katana? why did whale make that stupid deal on record with a lawyer present? is he retarded? why did babs open the door without looking? her door has a window. didnt she notice someone with a flaming head? etc. plus gotham is still a ghost town.

Posted by uberathlete

When they show all the newspaper clippings with Bats' picture I thought, Geez he's not very good at stealth is he? Then he walks in the middle of the road looking for baddies. lolz

Posted by Rainquility

@thetimestreamer: Pretty much everything you said I could agree with. Still feel the show gradually growing on me regardless of the gripes I may still have with it. I simply tune in to enjoy the ride. I'm hoping over times it improves even more which I know it will.

Yep. This episode rocked! :)

If this is based on modern day Batman, why did he stop when the Ghost aimed their guns at him? There's a thread on the modern/New 52 Batsuit. It's bulletproof. As in Superman level bulletproof. The bullets literally bounce off him. I guess since this is a younger Batman, it's all right. Episode was good.
