Best New Comic Book Battles This Week (9/7/12)

Arrows soar, Turtles dodge lasers and all you need for confidence is a cape. Check out k4tzm4n's pick for the best battles this week!

It appears you guys have a soft spot for violence because this is now an ongoing feature! But please don't worry, that doesn't make you twisted. We're all suckers for super powered characters in ridiculous costumes beating each other up. Another week of new comics means a whole new set of battles for us to enjoy and there were definitely some good ones on Wednesday.

I know it's tough to believe, but I'm only one man. As much as I'd love to read every new release, I simply don't have the cash for it. I'll do my best at my local shop to flip through the titles I'm not picking up, but ultimately I'm sure some will fly under my radar or one you love might not make my top 3. This means you're more than welcome to share your 3 favorites in the comments section and explain why you had a blast reading them.

There may be some minor spoilers below, so beware. Let's kick-off with my personal favorite, bros and broettes.

Hawkeye #2

A Hawkeye comic simply wouldn't be complete without some amazing accuracy feats, and Matt Fraction's second issue does not disappoint. The Avenger teams up with the young Kate Bishop to stop a group of thieves. Clint, despite training from Captain America and getting hand-to-hand praise from Iron Fist (while he was dressed as Ronin), doesn't have more than a handful of decent unarmed showings. This is especially disappointing for Barton fans seeing as he's appeared in over 2,000 issues. Unfortunately, this isn't an issue where they'll want to make scans of his unarmed abilities. Sure, he slugs a guy or two in the face, but in the end he's taken down by fodder. This is something the likes of Daredevil or even Moon Knight would have effortlessly cleaned up. Not exactly a shining moment for our hero. Thankfully, Hawkeye Jr. saves the day with a brutal shot to the neck, perfectly complimented by David Aja's unique style of art.

Clint Barton: shoulder tackling fools since 2012

Kate's 15 minutes of fame was far from over, though. After fleeing from some gunfire, she takes aim and releases 3 arrows simultaneously. Each arrow meets its target: a soft and squishy eyeball. The bottom panel here is sure to hold a permanent spot in your memory.

Going for a fatal shot would have been kinder, Kate.
Going for a fatal shot would have been kinder, Kate.

It's cool seeing Kate take charge and all, but this is Clint's book, so is there anything that would make Jeremy Renner proud? You bet there is. Check out this trick shot Clint pulls with his final arrow. Ouch.

Sacré bleu!
Sacré bleu!

Only 2 issues in and Hawkeye is absolutely one of Marvel's top titles. Now that the accurate archer has upset the likes of Kingpin and Tombstone, you can bet there's going to be plenty of excellent battles to come.

Action Comics #0

It's amazing how clothing can completely change your attitude. A nice suit can boost your confidence, and in this case, a cape can make you turn into a true hero. Unfortunately, abuse in homes is something all too common in this world. Writer Grant Morrison paints a dark picture of a family tormented by a drunk and violent boyfriend or father (it wasn't specified). The children and mother cower, helpless before his cruelty. However, little Luke, covered from neck to toe in Kal-El's cape (simply adorable), has had his fill of this. Enough is enough, and the cape gave him the courage he needed to overcome the tragic scenario. The scumbag pulls a knife on the brave child, but we quickly learn this is no ordinary cape. Baffled, Luke gives the chump a long overdue gut punch.

+5 swag.
+5 swag.

The only thing that would have made this scene more inspiring was if Luke yelled "Falcon punch!" Way to go, little dude. We're proud of you.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classic #4

The Turtles are used to kicking Foot butt by now in the classic Mirage run (now with 100% more color!), but alien robots is a whole new thing for them. Randomly spotting the TCRI building brought back vivid memories of their origin, so the ninja team decides to investigate. They find Splinter in suspended animation and, as usual, Raphael flips out (dude is in dire need of a chill pill). Luckily for him, a set of Utroms show up and give him an opportunity to vent.

Go, ninja, go, ninja, GO!
Go, ninja, go, ninja, GO!

The dialogue is dated and full of cheesiness, but it's the kind of silliness that'll fill you with nostalgia and put a smile on your face. The battle itself is yet another great display of the green heroes in action. They prove too fast and agile for laser blasts, and each use their respective weapon quite well. A sai through the head and a combo with a bo-staff were the standout moments for me.

 Cowabunga!
 Cowabunga!

Honorable mention: Batwing vs Death Jack (Batwing #0)

Viners, what are your picks this week and what did you think of the scenes I selected? Don't be shy, speak up!

To be fair, the melee did begin with him getting hit in the back of the head with a crowbar.

I could actually feel my heart beating faster during that scene in Hawkeye. Brutal and very well done. Love the old Turtles stuff. Violence at its most fun.

@Mercy_: This issue made me fall for her. That's right, I'm not afraid to say it :P

This seems like a good opportunity to ask what the hell is supposed to be happening in the Hawkeye book. What, was that arrow bouncing off the wall and hitting that guys neck supposed to paralyze him? Like one little touch to a nerve in the back and BOOM, he's Christopher Reeve?

I complained last month that there was no Hawkeye in the Hawkeye book -only Clint Barton- but now I understand the premise of the title and I have fallen in love with it; art and story wise this book is gold!

an archer who is as skilled as her( to shoot three people in the eyes from a distance) doesnt need to kill them as they are far below her abilities. instead what you have is a psycho doing trick shots and killing people by a very gory method. thats not heroism, thats perversion. according to katmanz, this is the best product marvel has, i am less than impressed( really more disgusted than anything)

I'm with you on this one lifeboy. I'm getting sick of the need for this kind of violence. When every hero becomes an anti-hero, it just becomes bland. I think writers are using violence increasingly to make their writing appear edgy and more interesting than it actually is.

@lifeboy: I never said these selections are the best the respective companies have to offer, I stated these these are my personal favorite action sequences in new comics this week.

However, there is a blurb about Hawkeye being one of Marvel's best books, and that again, is a personal opinion and I assure you it's not because Kate blinded two bad guys with her arrows.  It's because of the fantastic dialogue, unique art, and the ability to make Hawkeye's life incredibly interesting.

EDIT: Also, she didn't kill them.  To be exact, no one died in the comic.  All of the shots were non-lethal.  The very next page Kate says "They're not dead they're just blinded now.  For life probably."

Thanks for making me double check this one because I wasn't 100% about it.  There's a caption from Clint that says "but she's like nine years old and spoiled rotten."   Including "like" makes me believe it's a joke to underestimate her age, but I couldn't find an exact figure anywhere.  I'll edit it for now.  Thanks.

Didn't Kate and Patriot get all boo hoo and quit the hero thing though? I thought they did. And Speed and crew were made into ACTUAL Avengers. So..where...is Speed?? I wanna see Speed! Nah, they just wanted this awkward 'Kate secret fangirl crush on Clint' ish go about. No. I'm not happy. I'm quite upset actually.

yeah katzman, i was meaning to talk about that. so now the writer of hawkeye is trying to insult our intellegence by saying that a person shot thru the eyes with two arrows would live? that makes no sense. an arrow going at those kinds of velocities would have gone straight thru someones head there by killing them. im sorry, i dont mean to discourage you. personally i prefer drama but i know there is a market out there for mindless violence. keep up the good work i guess.

@lifeboy: Honestly, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little insulted you're referring to this as "mindless violence," especially seeing as action segments have always played a key role in this medium.   While I understand they were less graphic in classic comics, it's still a prominent part of media and I happen to find fictional battles (done well) entertaining.  I'm clearly not alone in that.  After all, debates over comic book battles is one of the most popular discussions among fans ("who would win?!").  That entire premise is built around imaging the characters we've grown to love letting loose on one another.  And I assure you not all picks are selected just because they might be violent or gory.  In fact, I wish this segment was around when Aunt May slapped Vulture, because I would have included that.  Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion and if it's not your cup of tea, so be it.  I certainly have no intention of changing your mind on that.

Really not sure how you came to that conclusion based on my previous post. Astounding comprehension skills there, glad to see doing all that "homework" is paying off.

Also, its tough to take your condescending attitude seriously considering you seem to be an avid fan of Peanuts comics. Must be some great material for you there.
