Best New Comic Book Battles: 04/26/13

This week we feature fights from TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, INVINCIBLE, and FIVE WEAPONS!

Usually this feature has a variety of publishers or it's even dominated by one of the Big Two, but this week there's zero battles from DC and Marvel in the spotlight. That's right, you won't see any Deadpool, Batman or Wolverine this week, Viners. Instead, I've got scans of the Ninja Turtles in action, a gory encounter from INVINCIBLE, and a fun fight from FIVE WEAPONS. Enjoy!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs. Awesome Clown Dude (TMNT #21)

Returning from their battle with General Krang in Dimension X, the Turtles continue their training across the rooftops of New York. However, nothing could prepare them for this attacker. Rocking a mask, impressive skill and even more impressive taunts, this unidentified figure promptly embarrasses the heroes in a half shell.

The verbal strikes hurt more than the physical ones.

A few swift moves later and the assailant heads for the hills. The Turtles pursue the formidable foe and when they finally spot him, Raphael does exactly what they'd expect him to do: rush into battle like a mad man. As you may have guessed, the encounter doesn't go any better for them and the character teaches them yet another lesson in combat.

Could it be Gambit under the mask? "Bang, you dead!"

As if two rounds of being stomped wasn't enough for the team, they go at it with this dude a third time. Sure, it's in the sewers so they technically have home field advantage, but it doesn't make a difference at all. The outcome is the same as before, but this time the fiend leaves with a threat: he's going after Master Splinter. The team rushes after him and gets into a fourth battle. Go on, guess how it goes. If you guessed," they get whooped again," then you're right!

Humiliation at its finest.

While this character does indeed put a beating on them, one character does manage to turn the tide and there's a big reveal shortly after. Purchase the issue to get all of the details, friends!

Omni-Man vs. Grand Regent Thragg (INVINCIBLE #103)

"Absolute power corrupts absolutely." Despite not posing an immediate threat or desire to usurp him, Thragg's determined to hold onto power and this made him believe the only way to do so is to kill Nolan Grayson. The fact Deborah was in the way was completely irrelevant to Thragg, and clashing with Omni-Man almost took her life as she was exposed to the harsh conditions of space. However, in spite of being outclassed in this battle, Nolan manages to throw her into an emergency air lock before the door slams shut (it's a really cool scene, but I limit each feature to 3 scans). His wife's worries are now over, but his have only just begun.

In space everyone can see you bleed.

What comes next is an absolutely brutal and bloody brawl. The art team (John Rauch, Ryan Ottley & Cliff Rathburn) does a superb job making us feel every vicious and blood-spewing strike. It's a hugely impressive feat on their behalf, providing gorgeous animated motion, a beautifully unique style, and a few totally cringeworthy strikes.

BRO, HE'S HAD ENOUGH, BRO.

I just can't get over that one punch in the above scan -- it knocked Omni-Man's freaking eye out and the fight still continues. As you can see below, having your eye drift away in a sea of chunky tomato sauce won't deter Nolan's will to love and overcome. From there, it all goes downhill for Thragg.

Solid sucker punch, Nick Fury!

Seeing as I don't want to spoil the comic and you should support what you love, I refuse to reveal how Omni-Man manages to turn the tide. If you want to know how it concludes and what developments stem from the melee, go buy it!

"Tyler" vs. Rick the Stick (FIVE WEAPONS #3)

The Shainline name is one to be feared and will send a chill down anyone's spine. But Rick the Stick? He simply cannot wait to get a piece of "Tyler." The new student dances around the club President's attacks at first, but there's a problem here: he needs to knock Rick out of the ring using a weapon... and seeing as our hero refuses to wield weapons, that can be a bit problematic.

"FWBAOOM!" has got to be the most epic noise a bo staff has ever made.

"Tyler's" certainly bright and skilled, but he can't evade Rick forever. I mean, we're talking about a kid who's known as a buddy in a school full of formidable assassins-to-be. We've still got no idea what the brilliant protagonist has up his sleeve, and in the meantime, the poor kid takes a few tough hits from the melee weapon. Youch.

Looks like you'll need another trip to the nurse, Tyler.

As usual, "Tyler" executes his master plan and takes advantage of Rick's weakness -- and we still have no idea what it is. Apparently blinded, the bully wildly flails his staff around to no avail. While our main character (can you tell I'm reaaaaaally trying to avoid his name for the new readers out there?) refuses to equip a weapon, it doesn't mean he's not allowed to use Rick's weapon against him. With just one finger, he manages to crush Rick's ego.

The poke is the mightiest weapon of them all.

You really don't think I'll reveal how he turns the tide of the challenge, do you? Of course not! Go buy the comic, silly.

Honorable Mentions

What are your top 3 this week, Viners?

Glad the armadillo fight got a mention, it put a nice smile on my face...especially kane's little reaction to the bull scene

No Noh-Varr's fight in Young Justice?!? Absurd!

I loved the bo stick battle in Five Weapons, too!

This mini series really is something else. What a wonderful story and plot!

Can't wait to find out what happened to Principle O's eye and the nurse's nose.

Nice article and battle scenes as usual!

The Ultimate Spidey fight still makes me a bit misty from the outcome. Poor Armadillo got his butt handed to him by the bottle.

@jaybefre: that fight was good shit. I loved the Hawkeye reference about him being a good shot "for a human"

Agreed. Best double-page spread I've seen in a long old time.

Hey ... it's Freddie Mercury Jr. on steroids versus Freddie Mercury Sr.

A style that would make the Village People proud! Yes, I'm looking at you oh 1980's mustaches!!

invincible's fights are ALWAYS the best ones.

the comic book title INVINCIBLE from issue 50 beyond (when Ryan Ottley's started taking over and his art style changed) started becoming OVER THE TOP and DRAWDROPPING. That is why Invincible is so freaking awesome.

Invincible.... outstanding

Totally agree on the TMNT book. I love Eastman's art and eventually finding out who the clown villain was was awesome even though I had a strong hunch beforehand.

@k4tzm4n: Alright man, usually I'm on board, and while the TMNT made me chuckle, damn near every fight from invincible could make the list on brutality alone, and I've LOVED every team leader fight in Five Weapons and look forward to next issue's, I've got to say I'm disappointed that Young Avengers wasn't featured. As I write I look up to realize that someone else made this comment, but my words are typed so here they are. I'll post what I'm talking about in the thread you linked.

Oh, come on! Rocket vs. Badoon only got an honorable mention?? :P

Seriously though, that fight was hilarious.

@k4tzm4n: Is that a new character in TMNT I never seen them before, looks like another mutant.

The identity of the character is revealed towards the end of the issue.

But if you really want to know... it's Master Splinter.

@k4tzm4n: Y'know, that's what I had assumed the instant I saw it and I'm not sure why.

The legs gave it away for me about halfway through the issue. Up until then, I wasn't really wondering who it was, just enjoying the skirmishes.

I didn't even notice those (consciously anyway) until I read it through the second time.

I gotta say, if I ever use TMNT in "Does Batman Always Win?" this issue doesn't exactly make me think they'll have good odds... That said, it does look like they'll undergo more training in the next issue.

Sure, they don't look so hot, but if you did a TMNT themed DBAW, I think the opponent would have to be Splinter, not his kids.

I've been chatting with the writers to get a good measure on how Splinter/Shredder compare to skilled combatants in DC. It'll be interesting to see their answers.

@k4tzm4n: Yeah, that would be interesting to read.

@jamdamage: Yea and then at the end he caps it all off by saying, "Come with me if you want to be awesome." Just epic! Lol.

HAHAHAHA I effin LOVE this!

look at that omni-man vs crap....punching a dudes eyeballs out.

but then let's make a vid about looking for new heroes because of them being too sexual.

punching a dudes face till it explodes is A-O-K....but sex between two consenting people is bad for the "children"

America..gotta love the stupidity

Edited by k4tzm4n

@norusdog: I have no idea what video you're talking about, but you do realize this is my feature and I have nothing to do with said video you've mentioned, yes? But please, don't let that stop you from generalizing. Unless, of course, you can find me saying it's okay to have violence in media but not sex. Then you'd actually have a point relevant to this feature, but, seeing as I think the double-standard on the matter is indeed silly when it comes to film and TV ("decapitation is cool, but a nipple or sex scene is frightening!"), you're not going to find that. As long as there's an appropriate rating on the front, I don't mind if there's either.
