Best New Comic Book Battles: 03/08/13

This week we feature Hawkeye unleashing in AGE OF ULTRON, a brutal gunfight in SHADOWMAN, and Sinestro fighting Baz in GREEN LANTERN.

BAM! POW! ZAP! That's why we're all here right now... to see comic book characters solve their problems with their fists, not their words. This weekly feature has a simple objective: highlight my three favorite fights from this week's new comics. It's never an easy task, though, and that's why the "honorable mentions" section is usually packed. If your favorite battle didn't make the cut, feel free to show off images of it below!

Hawkeye vs. Owl & Hammerhead's goons (AGE OF ULTRON #1)

Marvel's latest big event began this week, and luckily for us, it didn't feel like any of the recent events the House of Ideas has produced. Instead, we jumped right into the middle of the story and Brian Michael Bendis focused on how this cold and dark world has impacted the popular heroes we've come to know and love. We're used to seeing a lighthearted and fun Hawkeye over in Matt Fraction's series, but Bendis introduced an all serious business and completely badass version of the character. The event starts with him taking on a house of goons and the result is plenty of brutal arrow kills.

I used to be a loudmouth... then I took an arrow to the mouth. Sorry, couldn't resist.

It's clear Clint is searching for someone as he takes on a sea of Hammerhead and Owl's goons, but we don't know who just yet. Seeing Hammerhead throw away the lives of his men was twisted and funny, but I never thought a villain with an adamantium skeleton would be such a pansy. I'm disappointed in you, Hammerhead.

See, crime doesn't pay, kids.

Clint definitely feels more like his Ultimate universe counterpart in this world, and that's absolutely a good thing. He continues to clean house, headshotting more cannon fodder and bringing a lot of additional pain with a grenade. We soon discover it's a battered and bruised Spider-Man he's come to rescue and does indeed save the wall-crawler.

Fourth week in a row: MICHAEL BAY'D!

A group of Ultrons rudely interrupt and it gives Clint a chance to bolt with Spidey. Despite needing to flee, the marksman still manages to take one of the robots down with a putty/explosive arrow.

Viners, what did you think of AGE OF ULTRON #1?

Baron Samedi Worshiper vs. The Brethren (SHADOWMAN #5)

Faith in Baron Samedi, the Voodoo God of the Dead, has diminished over the years and his shrines have been reduced to being sold in gift shops. But one man still believes in the once powerful Baron Samedia, and he's about to remind everyone why The Baron should still be feared. This man brings his fight to the The Brethren -- humans who worship Master Darque -- and the result feels like a scene stripped right from a John Woo movie.

We just cleaned that, dammit!

The Brethern stand no chance as this unnamed badass busts through the sliding door like a total boss. Prepare for a lot of shooting and a lot of blood. Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said it's like a John Woo movie. I only provided three pages here, but there's another page of even more dudes eating quite a few bullets.

That's one way to make an entrance.

Guns blazing, this Terminator-esque man wipes everyone out and tags the last guy in the leg. Clearly a merciless man, he then steps on said gunshot wound before executing the incapacitated man. When all is said and done, he mooches one of their beers before leaving.

LIKE. A. BOSS.

Start reading SHADOWMAN! Seriously, go pick it up.

Thaal Sinestro vs. Simon Baz (GREEN LANTERN #18)

Thanks to Black Hand, Simon Baz has now been trusted into The Dead Zone. Fortunately for us, this gives us some long overdue time with Hal Jordan and Thaal Sinestro. When Hal points out Baz still has his ring on, the creator of the Yellow Lantern Corps tries to take it. Hal attempts to stop him, but a kick to the face quickly shuts him down. Seeing Sinestro won't stop, Baz then tries to stop him, but as we've seen before, his own ring cannot hurt him -- not even if it's a van smashing him in the face.

Thaal refuses to look both ways before crossing the street.

The art team (Ardian Syaf, Mark Irwin, Tony Avina) does a phenomenal job with this segment. They deliver an astonishing vibe that lets us fully appreciate how bleak and hopeless this place is supposed to be. It simply looks great as the two continue to struggle and tumble down a hill.

This is why no one plays tag with Thaal anymore.

Remember how we all made fun of Baz for having a gun? Why does he need that if he has one of the most powerful weapons in the universe on his finger, right? Well, holding onto that gun sure did payoff in this issue.

Don't let The Dead Zone cops know he doesn't have a permit for that.

Fear not, friends, Sinestro isn't dead... well, any deader, that is. You can't die (again) in The Dead Zone if you have the will to live.

Two of my favorites made it. (:

Wow, how do you omit Superman's and Supergirl's final fight with H'el?

The honorable mentioning list sound better than the shadowman one. Murder Mouth? Sinister vs Doom(even if it's just his unfinished work) ... (+)
Posted by Med

which title was sinister vs doom in?

Posted by TheElusiveNewReader

Man, I didn't read any of them.

Posted by ripcurl

How'd Sinestro make it?

I found that "fight" pretty boring...

Posted by dtschemmel

@TheElusiveNewReader: You're missing out on Shadowman.

Goddam

mofo actually Shot sinestro, and back then I thought that gun was just a fashion accesory

I really can't wait to read Age of Ultron. I'm so excited

I enjoyed the fights in both Swamp Thing and Animal Man this week. We've seen Buddy go up against the Hunters and Swamp Thing fight Arcane before, but this time the outcome was victory. Quickly followed by tragedy.

How could you not include the battle from new Superior Spider-man, where SS kills Massacre?

Posted by toptom

even for me, sinestro vs simon, wasn't such a great fight.

Well, seeing as I dropped H'el after the second chapter and no one suggested in the official discussion thread for this feature...

Because that would be spoiling the biggest part of the issue.  Not sure if you've been following this segment, but I've reduced the amount of scans to help keep it (mostly) spoiler-free.

Damn! Shadowman looks brutal.

Gah! He put a spoiler block on it ... but you quoting him removed it! So, you ended up spoiling the best part of the issue anyway! You ... you ... cretin! :P

@k4tzm4n: thanks. totally forgot about that. also, we dropped h'el at the same time.

I wouldve vote starks fight with the aliens higher personally, Its always refreshing to see that he's a capable fighter without his armor...even if it is LAND art...

Posted by Mowgli22

Shadowman is awesome, but why didnt Swamp Thing make it man?

Posted by k4tzm4n
@Mowgli22: Because I don't read SWAMP THING (waiting for a TPB) and no one bothered to suggest/nominate it in the official thread for this feature.

The big-ass fight from Glory #33 didn't make the honorable mentions?

See, this is why I have the official discussion thread. I don't read every title out there and if there's a fight worth mentioning, I'm counting on you guys to let me know.

@k4tzm4n: Shadowman and AoU were my favorites.

I read all three of these fights this week, but the fight in Green Lantern was the best. Baz's utilization of his once laughable accessory was incredibly powerful. I love his character so much, and the fact that he was able to go toe-to-toe with Sinestro shows how incredibly unique he is (especially considering his lack of experience, and his ability to heal people with his ring.)

Awesome choices this week! Can't wait to see what Baron Samedi and Master Darque have planned, and how Jack's inevitable confrontation with Samedi's agent plays out.

@k4tzm4n: You dropped the H'el arc 2 issues in? That's a shame...it was actually pretty interesting, with the Superboy issues being the only real weak link. I recommend it...but don't know how much you like Superman. It gives some interesting tidbits about the new 52.

What a bummer. At first I thought, "C'mon ComicVine, you can't begin to compare, to pit those 'action' titles against that other 'sci-fi action' title..." Well, again, what a bummer... 'cause IT TOO 'INDAMNDEED' ENDED WITH A TRITE GUNSHOT FOR GUARDIANS SAKE!!! That's just soooooo, so LAME.

DC staff, It's official. You definitely lost it.

Don't worry. Sooner or later, a week will only have epic street-level fights based on hand-to-hand combat only, which won't involve any explosions whatsoever!

Sinestro v. Baz FTW for me.

There's been a lot of Michael Baying going on these past few weeks. You might have to work it into your weekly captions.

@TylerTheDestroyer: Also very nice.
