Best New Comic Book Battles: 03/01/13

Robin battles his massive clone, Punisher takes on the Avengers and the Ninja Turtles confront the Foot Clan!

Welcome to the latest 'Best Battles!' A rich story packed with character development is good fun and all, but sometimes you just want to put your brain on hold and enjoy some senseless action. Well, 'Best Battles' has your back on this one. Every week our favorite fictional characters tend to solve their problems with their fists and it's all for amusement. So every Friday I'll narrow down the assortment of new fights to my 3 favorites and then share images of them for your entertainment. There's a few words thrown in the mix, too!

Without further ado.. Let the games begin!

WARNING! MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW!

Robin vs Heretic

Grant Morrison, why must you make me shed so many masculine tears? We've known this moment was coming for quite some time, but man, that really didn't make it any easier to witness. There's a beyond heartwarming moment between Nightwing and Damian (knowing his demise is near makes this so much harder to read, too), but then Damian's big ol' clone of a brother enters the room. Mister sociable takes out Nightwing with one move. ONE MOVE!

Worst double shoryuken ever.

Damian arrived in hopes of talking his mother -- Talia al Ghul -- out of this madness. But the Heretic isn't one for talking. The massive brute attacks Robin, despite the child's pleas for his mother to cease the assault. Grant Morrison then rips out my heart and stomps on it... he makes Damian scream for his father's help as he begins to take on a character he clearly cannot defeat.

The beginning of the end.

Damian's cries for help will go unanswered. Talia will not cease, Batman is too far away, and Tim and Dick are still knocked out. It's you against impossible odds, Damian. I believe in you little dude. If you're going to go out, at least you'll go out like a champ... and he most certainly does.

STOP HURTING HIM, COWARDS!

If you want to see the rest, you'll just have to buy the issue. And yes, it's absolutely worth buying.

Punisher vs. Avengers

Greg Rucka departs Punisher with one helluva bang. We all know Frank Castle can't go toe-to-toe with these heavy hitters. Iron Man, Thor... these are dudes that would mop the floor with Frank. But luckily for him, they're looking to take him in alive. Rucka's writing makes us believe Frank can give this team of A-listers trouble, and he most certainly does!

YES! Third week in a row I can say, "MICHAEL BAY'D!"

Frank does what he can to simply survive and uses his prep time masterfully. He shoots a trip wire near Iron Man, humiliates Thor with Spidey's stolen web-shooters (how embarrassing), but despite being able to toying with these heavy hitters, it's Black Widow that gets in close and knocks Frank about a bit. Based on the image below, I sincerely hope Mr. Castle is wearing a cup.

Web-shooters > God of Thunder

Frank was never really in it to win it. He does what he can to buy as much time as possible (if you want to know why, READ THE COMIC!), but ultimately his luck can only last for so long against this team. They all regain their composure and each get their chance for a little bit of payback. Thor takes out Frank's gun, Iron Man gets a blast in, and then Black Widow goes ahead and kicks Frank while he's down! That's just cold, Natasha.

Aw, that was his favorite pistol, too.

Up next: PUNISHER: PRISON JOURNAL.

TMNT vs. Foot Clan

If you even remotely like the Turtles you need to be reading this limited series (Secret History of the Foot Clan). It's directly connected to the IDW ongoing and is shedding so much light on the franchise's rich history. Oh, and did I mention it looks awesome and is superbly written? Because it is.

The Turtles are ready for you, Hawkeye.

Mateus Santolouco is clearly giving these panels all he's got. The fights look terrific and I love the blur effects being used to illustrate how fast their actions truly are. Raph of course relishes the opportunity to fight overwhelming odds, but the real treat is seeing Leo and Karai face off. It's not the longest battle around, but it's safe to say this won't be the last time we see these two go at it.

Is it wrong that I root for Shredder? It is, isn't it?

Even more fights break out, but again, the best part is the clash of katanas taking place between Karai and Leo. Once more, it's the motion that really sells these scenes and makes them tremendously fun. Better luck next time, Karai.

A sewer Turtle's foot to the face? Someone get Karai some Purell.

There's a spectacular chase sequence immediately after and a vicious sword fight during one of the past segments... but showing you everything would be no fun. Now, do yourself a favor and go buy this issue!

Honorable Mentions

  • Thor vs. Scarlet Witch & Havok
  • Sif vs. "Spider-Man"
  • Hawkeye vs. Tracksuit bros
What are your top 3? Speak your mind below!

"...he makes Damian scream for his father's help as he begins to take on a character he clearly cannot defeat."

Umm... he wasn't screaming for his fathers help. Look at the two previous speech bubbles. Although there were exclamation marks the fact that each single word had them it stands reason to look that it was meant to be a sentence.

"Just. Stop! Fighting! Father!"

He's not calling for help he was making an attempt to reach to his mother and get her to stop fighting Batman.

The Damien fight really was something to read through. So many haters and I feel their pain, my favorites have died and comeback a few times and I havnt liked it either, not one bit. But that fight was really intense and I'm not even an Inc. Fan. Sad to see Rucka's Punisher go, I have every issue, and his Frank Castle was a totall badass.

Some really great throw downs this week. Hawkeye in the strip club was great. Batman Inc. #8 was brutal. Damian went out like a warrior.

That certainly makes sense but I clearly interpret it differently. He's trying to reason with his mother and even the Hertetic. When it's clear the man won't yield (and is overpowering him), I viewed it at him screaming out loud for Bruce's help because he was in dire need of help and it shows how much he's come to rely on Bruce. Whenever he's yelling the font is bold. That's at least how I understood the scene at the time and personally think it makes the scene far more emotional than him just saying "Stop fighting Batman, mom!"

The TMNT fight was awesome. I have come to absolutely love that series. It's in my Top 5 books now. The Hawkguy fight was pretty cool too, even though it was only fists. And it hasn't happened yet but I'm really looking forward to the fight in the next Uncanny X-Men.

Definitely. Secret History of the Foot Clan is a ridiculously good book. It's too bad it's only a limited series.

Agreed. I have only been collecting the ongoing since issue 14 but yesterday I bought all the trades before it. I also got the volume 1 trade for the Micro-Series, so I'm excited to read all those now too

as much as i like the punisher , i haven't read rucka's stuff because i just do not like frank in the 616-verse or anywhere with super beings around , like mike grell's green arrow , frank castle is better in a world without them , fighting human opponents

When Damian says "Stop! Fighting!" I thought of it sorta like in Saving Private Ryan, when the American soldier was fighting the Nazi in that house at the end, and the Nazi was overpowering him and the American says something like, "stop!" or "don't do this," as a last-ditch effort to try and get someone close to killing you to stop killing you. Damians panic translates

I've hated Daken ever since he killed Frank. Especially in that manner.

@k4tzm4n: Great post. Really sad to see Damian go, but at least he went down fighting. Hopefully this doesn't get retconned or randomly brought back as a Black Lantern or something stupid like that. Jason Todd is cool, but two of them is just....eh....

The Artifact bearers vs the Darkness and The Ancient Ones was pretty hardcore in my book. Top Cow needs more love.

Posted by Jawshco

Greg, you mentioned my top two favorites with Punisher (specifically the Iron Man vs Punisher fight) and Batman Inc.

I don't read TMNT, so I would have included Octo-Spider-man vs Death's Head from Avenging Spider-man.

Posted by mightypug78

poor nightwing, he may just take it as hard as batman will. He may feel like its his fault the little guy died.

Posted by Mercy_
@mightypug78 Dick has a tendency to assume responsibility regardless of whether or not it's his fault. Add that with the earlier scenes in the issue and I wouldn't be surprised at all.

R.I.P Damian...

Edited by Batmarcus

@Mercy_: I have to agree there I want to see an enraged Nightwing go after The Heretic. Better yet Batman and Nightwing both angrier than we have ever seen before go after him resulting in a spectacular fight that ends with one of them crossing the line and actually killing The Heretic. Do you think this could happen?

Gracias. Yeah, I hope if he does come back that it won't be for awhile. Like, a decade.

Nice choices k4tzm4n. Might have to pick up that issue with the Punisher vs. Avengers fight. The TMNT one looked pretty good too.

No no, not the actual comics, but the article on the site this week :P We didn't get to see any of the conclusions :P

Edited by k4tzm4n

@SexualLobster: Well yeah, I'm no longer going to provide scans of the entire fight. This way it'll hopefully motivate people to buy the comic if they want to see all of it.
