Best Comic Covers of the Week: 1/11/12

Check out some of this week's best looking comic covers.

It's the end of the week which means it's time for another weekly round-up of some of our favorite covers. As usual if there are any covers you feel we may have missed please feel free to list them below to share with the rest of the community. And now, without further ado, here are some of our favorites!

First up is the cover to ANIMAL MAN #16 by artist Steve Pugh. We chose this one because of Steve's attention to detail and the complexity of the image. It's a picture that really grabs you and pulls you into the story, and it helps that the issue is pretty great too!

== TEASER ==

The cover to B.P.R.D. HELL ON EARTH #103 serves as a great example of clever use of colors by artist James Harren. I love that the main characters are essentially "staring into the abyss." The mysterious figure in the background adds just the right touch to really make it beautiful.

When Adam Hughes takes pencil to paper, magic is almost always guaranteed to happen. The cover to this month's FAIREST #11 is a prime example of exactly that. The image is highlighted with water colors and the result is just breathtaking.

There's just something really visually appealing about the latest cover to JOE PALOOKA #2 by artist Fernando Peniche. We loved seeing the contrast between the posters of Joe in the background, and him looking a little bit battered and beaten in the foreground.

Artist Francesco Francavilla's cover to NEW CRUSADERS: RISE OF THE HEROES #5 is fantastic. It has a classic superhero, noir feel and gives the viewer the impression that these heroes are ready for battle. We loved the way Francavilla plays with light in this image, too.

If you've ever wondered what Frank Castle's face might look like when it gets hit hard Thor's Mjolnir, well, artist Marco Checchetto gives us a bit of a hint. The details, the colors, and everything else is why we had to put this one on our list.

Finally, Erik Larsen's cover to SAVAGE DRAGON demonstrates really beautifully how minimalism can be so much more profound than a cover with a lot of detail.

What were some of your favorite comic covers for this week? Share them with us below!

Sorry, STAR WARS #1 drawn by Alex Ross really should be included here as well.

Damn. That Savage Dragon cover makes me want to buy it, and I've never read a Savage Dragon book.

The Animal man cover looks awesome

@bunkerbuster05: It's pretty good and VERY unappreciated

Savage Dragon is one of those books I've always wanted to follow, but just never made room for on my pull-list. Maybe when Larsen is all done there will be some absolute edition that collects everything. It would have to be a freak'n massive! More like a masterworks series.

Artifacts 24 was a great cover

I have been reading since 1997 and own a copy of every issue either in singles in trade, dude trust me its a great book. Its a wild wild ride and although there is 20 years of continuity there are many great jumping on points. If you want more info about the book feel free to hit me up.

Dang it, my local comic store just stopped getting New Crusaders (I think). It feels like a gamble to get it.

I think a really good cover this week was The Phantom Stranger issue #4

whose that metal guy on Animal Man cover with Superman's symbol on his chest?

Posted by MeloDet

@ccraft: That's Steel.

Alex Ross on Star Wars was pretty awesome. I love everything he does.

Animal Man was okay, but I liked Swamp Thing more. Neither was particularly good, but I liked the feel of Swamp Thing more.

Punisher: War Zone was awesome. Thor: God of Thunder was almost as good, but not quite.

Avengers Arena was okay. Not bad, not good.

Batwing's cover wasn't good. The faces are weird, and the symbol on his chest is different is from what's on his chest in the issue. Weird.

Wolverine and the X-Men was good. That should have beaten out Animal Man this week.

Fantastic Four was solidly average.

I liked X-Men Legacy's cover, but I wouldn't call it one of the best of the week. All the covers to this series have been similar, except for #3. I want more variety. I get that he multiple personalities at this point.

Did New Crusaders come out this week? My store didn't get it and says it didn't come out this week, but it seems from your site and others that it did come out.

Gah! What? My gawd, man! If you've ever enjoyed a Robert Kirkman book, you should read Savage Dragon. Kirkman freely admits to having learned his tricks from Larsen.

I liked Dial H's cover this week, a good representation of the villain's powers. Then again Brian Bolland has been knocking the Dial H covers out of the park.

New Crusaders 5 is probably one of the ugliest covers of all time.

@batnight: I was highly surprised it was not on this list. Best cover I own.
