Best Comic Book Covers of the Week: 4/4/12

The Comic Vine staff chooses some of the week's best issue covers.

There are many factors in deciding what comic books to pick up each week. Many of us have our pull lists at our local comic shops. Every now and then a comic book cover will catch your eye and compel you to pick it up. Each week we take a look at the week's release and decide which we feel were the best covers of the week. Obviously this will be opened up to debate and we'd love to hear which covers really caught your attention.

FAIREST #2

No Caption Provided

It was pretty much unanimous that any time Adam Hughes does a cover, it's a good thing. It's always a treat to see his work and interpretation of the characters. What makes FAIREST even better is the interior art by Phil Jimenez is also beautiful. Great story, great cover and great interior. A winning combination across the board.

== TEASER ==

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #683 (Variant)

No Caption Provided

We almost missed this one because it was a variant cover. Thanks to Mat Elfring, he brought it to our attention. It's always a tough call when it comes to variant covers. It's understandable that the publishers will want to go with a nice piece of art for the variant to make the incentive to order and buy it greater. It's just a little crummy when you miss out on the great cover because the price is jacked up (if you even get a chance to see it at your local comic shop).

STATIC SHOCK #8

No Caption Provided

We've probably all seen this type of cover many times. It's night time. It's raining and there's lightning giving off a dramatic mood. It's unfortunate that this is the final issue. But the simplicity of the cover along with the homage to his old look just sparked enough interest (no pun intended) to be included this week.

FLEX MENTALLO (Deluxe Edition HC)

No Caption Provided

Why limit our picks to just comic books? This week the Flex Mentallo hardcover was released (I'm still waiting for my copy). But it's Flex Metallo and it's Frank Quitely. That's reason enough to be included.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #25

No Caption Provided

It could be debated if this cover should be here this week or if it should've been last week. There was a shipping error and the West Coast didn't receive their copies until this week. Regardless, it's a great cover (to a great series).

Those are some of the covers we dug. Which ones did you love? What amazing covers did we miss?

EDIT

As feargalr pointed out, the best cover this week is another variant.

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #1 (Skottie Young Variant)

No Caption Provided

I would so love to have this cover. :(

That spider-man variant is really cool, as is the static shock cover!. Midtown comics had the variant AvX cover with the baby Avengers vs baby X-men, which is my favourite of the week even though I didn't get it :(

Static is awesome and so is his title's cover. They should get him a new series with a new writer.

At first, I was confused why that BATWOMAN #8 cover wasn't on this list, then I remembered that was a preview and it's not out yet.

@G-Man: That cover actually presented an opportunity where my daughter asked me about the dots on the cover and so I broke out a book with braille in it... it was a good learning moment.

I thought Vertigo was one of the three universe's fused together to create the New52 timeline? Why is DC still producing books under the vertigo name then???

The AvX cover is my cover photo on Facebook, and I don't think I'm ever going to read the event. It's just so good.

I can't wait to get my hands on the Flex Mentalo HC.

Love the ASM variant but I really wish the artist had used a different color then the orange blegh, would have been much nicer in a non-standard dark blue.

Because most of the vertigo series are creator-owned. The new 52 has vertigo characters that were part of the DCU before they merged to vertigo. The only exception is John Constantine, who appears in both universes.

and the three that were merged were DC, Milestone and Wildstorm.

Before the new 52 there was bleed over primarily in JLA and the whole Static thing made little sense since they acted like he had always been in the DCU, I don't know of any official Milestone characters in the new 52 yep but I'm pretty sure that it was said that Milestone was merged in, probably just hasn't been any reason to use any of them yet but I wouldn't be surprised if there has been an easter egg in one of the comics mentioning a city called Dakota.

@pikahyper: No it was definatley DC Wildstorm and Vertigo. Milestone had nothing to do with it. When Static was integrated in the DCU a couple years back it was as a new character. None of his history from Milestone stuck other than his origin and a couple of other small things.

@noj: Vertigo was not merged, DC just took back a couple of characters from Vertigo that had been regular DCU back in the day and that was done before the New 52.

@pikahyper: What I mean is the Vertigo Universe was merged. That being the characters and stories that shared the same fictional universe. Such as Swamp Thing, Constantine, and more that we will probably see later such as The Endless from Sandman. The Vertigo imprint on the other hand is still alive and well. and kept the books that were self contained to their own universes such as American Vampire and Fables. You are right in a sense though since the Vertigo universe originally stemmed from the DC Universe, though there are character unique to Vertigo that we will likely be seeing now that it has become reintegrated into the proper DCU.

@noj: I don't see it that way at all, DC taking back Vertigo characters is nothing new, they've been doing it for over a decade, it was only the last couple of times with them taking Death, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing and Hellblazer (kinda) that there was any kind of outrage. Taking back some characters does not make me think it was merged in at all, especially in the instance of people saying it was one of the three imprints merged into DCnU as the last Vertigo characters taken happened many months before DCnU even happened, isn't Swamp Thing the only recent Vertigo character active/inactive in the new 52?

@pikahyper: There was also Shade the Changing man off the top of my head. But the point is that the universes merged. That is canon. Vertigo characters may not have been as visible as Wildstorm ones since many of them were from the DCU in the first place but that is what happened. And here is proof

No Caption Provided

Bottom is obviously old DcU Top left is VERTIGO, and top left Wildstorm. 3 universes come together and the DCnU is born.

@ArturoCalaKayVee: My understanding is that the creator-owned Vertigo titles, such as Fables, Sweet Tooth, etc (those that never had any relation to the DCU) are going to continue under the Vertigo imprint, and those that were DC prior to the launch of the Vertigo line were reverting to the DCU. Not sure why Hellblazer is still being published under the Vertigo banner, though, particularly since John has appeared with Swamp Thing in DC titles very recently (at least as recently as The Search miniseries about a year ago...)

@noj: Interesting but still makes little sense, DC took back Animal Man like seven years ago so he shouldn't have been considered a Vertigo character. Just continues to show that DC is a bunch of morons that can't be original or do proper research.

@pikahyper: OBVIOUSLY DC knows that Animal Man was in the DC proper. So was Swamp thing and Constantine like you mentioned earlier. But when the Universes merged they regained elements from their Vertigo counterparts. Other characters like Shade came over from Vertigo.

@noj: Is the female character in that image supposed to be Death? I think it is a horrible decision to merge in Vertigo, if they wanted to take back some of the characters fine but merging in Milestone would have been much better for DC as a whole, Milestone had a much large stable of unique characters that would appeal to a modern audience and the key demographics DC is targeting now and it shows with the popularity of Static and Xombi. Milestone was before its time and has never gotten the respect it deserved. In a short period of time DC killed three excellent imprints; CMX, Zuda and Milestone, horrible decision.

@pikahyper: Im not sure exactly who the girl is. It may be the Vertigo version of Zatanna, or maybe Xanadu. But really Milestone would not have been a good choice to merge. Really the only noteworthy character to come from Milestone is Static. And look at the "popularity" of the characters you mentioned. Both Xombi and Static Shock were canceled. Vertigo was the much better choice

@noj: I doubt it is Zatanna she was mainly only used for a one shot back in the 90's, Xanadu is likely.

Wasn't Static Shock only cancelled because of editorial decisions and not popularity? I thought it did all right and as for Xombi I don't think that was actually cancelled, it was always meant to be a limited series to test the waters and from what I was told it had a proper ending. Re-introducing Milestone characters would have allowed DC to reach out to a larger multi-cultural audience and even after all these years that is an area that DC continues to suffer at, the characters as is might not be as popular but with some changes and modernizing they could have appealed to a large audience and been very popular.

@pikahyper: Im almost positive that all the cancellations were for sales reasons. I looked it up, and it was on a steady decline from issue one with issue 5 only selling 13,000 copies. What memorable characters come from milestone. Ive been a fan for years now and the only one Ive ever even heard of was Static, and I had no idea Xombi was milestone either. Vertigo simply had more interesting, popular characters which is why it makes sense that DC would integrate them into the DcU.

@noj: I don't always equate low sales with popularity, books are still popular even with low sales, DC is all about the money though and have high demands on new titles and rarely give them the adequate time they need to develop a following.

Icon, Rocket, Hardware, Holocaust, Xombi, Kobalt, Wise Son, DMZ, Dogg all good characters, Shadow Cabinet was used in Justice League for a bit with mixed results. I've never been a fan of the main DCU or DC Animated Universe Static's as they are pale comparisons of the Milestone version. I have always been a big Milestone fan and I still know a ton of people that love Milestone so their is still a loyal fanbase out there to be exploited by DC especially since the kids that grew up reading Milestone comics are now old enough to have more disposable income and kids of their own to introduce to the characters. Milestone did an incredible thing for the industry in creating a universe populated by diverse characters of all races that could appeal to and provide role models for minorities. From wikipedia:

"At the 2008 Comic-Con DC Comics executive editor Dan DiDio announced that the Milestone Universe and characters would be revived and merged into the DC Universe proper. Examples of the integration include Static joining the Teen Titans, various appearances in Brave and the Bold, and the Shadow Cabinet appearing in Justice League of America. Following its assimilation into the DCU proper, Dakota was referenced in the animated Batman: the Brave and the Bold episode Aquaman's Outrageous Adventure.
In 2010, DC released a limited series titled Milestone Forever. Taking place in the original Milestone Universe, it detailed the final fate of several of Dakota's heroes and revealed the events that led to its merger into the DC Universe."

While Vertigo may have some interesting characters there are not a whole lot of them, merging Vertigo gives them maybe two dozens characters to use and most Vertigo books are no more popular then the previously mentioned low sales for Static and Xombi especially with modern readers that have no historical knowledge of the characters, the fact that they would put Swamp Thing in such a prominent spot is shocking seeing as how no matter what they do to him they couldn't keep his various ongoing series going for very long.
