It's the end of the week, and you know what that means. It's time for Comic Vine's Best Comic Book Covers of the Week! At the end of every week, the Comic Vine staff jumps into the company hot air balloon and lifts themselves up into the air, roughly 5,000 feet. Then they discuss what the best covers are and we all put them in this little piece for you. This week, there were a ton of really cool covers, and we tried to pick out some of the best for you.
BALTIMORE THE INFERNAL TRAIN #2 by Ben Stenbeck
First up, we have the cover for BALTIMORE THE INFERNAL TRAIN #2 by artist Ben Stenbeck. This creepy cover really fits with writer Mike Mignola's writing and art style, so Stenbeck's work here is a great compliment to it. The cover is pretty basic, but it has a lot of little things that make it extremely cool. The background colorwork is in multiple tones, which gives it a grittier feeling, and the face here is pretty memorable as well.
AVENGERS #21 by Leinil Francis Yu
Next, we have AVENGERS #21 by Leinil Francis Yu. Really? This is Yu's work? It's really hard to believe, but apparently, Yu did this cover which is very different from his normal style of art. This is a really haunting piece of art. We loved the way that the piece works so well with the space around it and that the character's dimly lit. We would love to see Yu do more work like this!
FABLES #134 by Mark Buckingham
The next addition to this list is the cover art from Mark Buckingham for FABLES #134. This piece is really cool. There's some very nice water colors working here. We love the way that the art works with the background here. The wolf looks really cool, and the overall color work is something we really admire. Lots of FABLES covers stand out, but this is one of our favorites.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #7 by Paolo Rivera
This week, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #7 has a slew of really cool looking covers, but the coolest one was the Paolo Rivera variant seen here. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY had a lot of cool covers this week, especially the Skottie Young cover (check it out), but this one, with the throwback design, really tickled our fancy. The border of the comic and the title are extremely cool and it's interesting to see these characters in a more classic comic book style.
THE SHADOW #18 by Alex Ross
Up next is THE SHADOW #18 with a cover by Alex Ross. He may not do interiors as much anymore, but he still turns out some awe-inspiring covers. His more realistic-take on characters isn't something fans see everyday. Here, the Shadow is standing on top of a girder, overlooking the city. The perspective is really cool, and the fact that it's angled just a little bit, creating a bit of a feeling of dizziness, is what sets this image apart from the rest.
ZERO #2 by Tom Muller
Finally, it's time for a cover that isn't like the rest. Here we have ZERO #2 by Tom Muller. This is pretty far off, as covers go, from what comic book fans are used to, and it really works. There's limited use of color here, which makes the red-faced man, hiding between two soldiers, really stand out, and there's also heavy use of repetition. It's strange, but bye-golly, it's really cool
