Best Comic Book Covers of the Week: 1/3/14

Happy New Year! We're back with a whole bunch of new and awesome covers for you!

Happy New Year, folks! It's now 2014 and that means a whole new year for awesome comic book covers. Each week, the Comic Vine staff declares war on each other while trying to pick out the best comic book covers for the week. After a long week of battle and hurled insults, this is what we all settled on.

First up, we have the cover to SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN #7 by In-Hyuk Lee. While this issue really revolves around how Janice became the Beetle, the cover along is pretty darn awesome. The color here is amazing, and this team just looks so dang epic.

SUPERMAN #26 by Ken Lashley

The next cover on our list is SUPERMAN #26 by Ken Lashley. It's hard not to look at this and be reminded of the final scene in the original Total Recall. We love the ink and color work are fantastic here. The light coming out of Superman's face look very cool and his eyes lighting up are a great focal point for the cover.

TALON #14 by Emanuel Simeoni

Coming at you next is TALON #14 by Emanuel Simeoni. Simeoni puts detail into this piece exactly where it counts. Simeoni gives us a very up close and personal look at this character and you can even see the veins in Talon's chin. What's really fantastic about this cover is the shading work on the owl mask. The transition is smooth and flawless.

NEW AVENGERS #13 (Variant) by Mike Deodato

Here we have the variant cover to NEW AVENGERS #13 by Mike Deodato. He's been on this list many times, and it's because his cover work is amazing. Deodato really captures Black Bolt exquisitely here. The lines coming off of him really make it feel like his voice is powerful. It's so powerful, in fact, that it destroys the logo.

SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #5 (Silver Age Variant) by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez

Finally, we have the Silver Age variant to SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #5 by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez with Trish Mulvihill. It's so nice to see Mr. Mxyzptlk on the cover of a book again. The cover really captures the essence and fun of the Silver Age. The colors are bright and vibrant and this cover really pops!

That does it for another week of awesome comic book covers! Did you love a cover this week that we didn't put in this list? Then make sure to let us know in the comment section below!

More people should be reading this series. Favorite art of any title I'm reading right now.

I really like the Black Bolt cover. But that may just be because I'm a big Deodato fan.

SUPERIOR FOES is the best. The others aren't that great.

Amy Reeder Is going to be the new Fiona Staples....... Her art is amazing. Watch she is going to be one of the big names in comic art by the end of 2014........

Wow! That's way better than any in this week's picks.

Might just have to look into this Rocket Girl.

@judasnixon: I sincerely hope she does become a big name. Her art is so fluid looking. It's like if Humberto Ramos toned himself down some and added some shinyness. She gets how to make things cartoonish and kinetic without making them look exaggerated. AND it stars a kick@ss teenage female protagonist. Probably my favorite book out right now. I totally have a creative team crush.

@kalibooostew: You absolutely should check it out. It's only three issues in right now and I haven't been reading it digitally, but if you read digital comics the inking in this series seems like it would look fantastic on a tablet. If I'm not mistaken it's also cheaper digitally.

That Superman Unchained one is great, but I'm not sure whether or not I like the Superman one.

That SFoSM cover……a true thing of beauty.

I gotta say, I have loved a majority of the Superman Unchained variant covers (more so than the standard cover) for every issue.

I loved the Superman cover. Really nice.

That Superman cover is intense. Love it. Initially I thought it may have been a Jae Lee cover. Not that I am complaining, it is great.

A lot of arts are pretty nice. Very difficult to choose which one is the best. I love 'em all.

Superman cover translate:
I'm not leaving, Superman- Until you solve my mixed-up riddle.

@timelordscience: I loved it. I had to go back and find those issues she worked on because I hadn't even heard of her until Rocket Girl launched. Her art in that title is a little different than Batwoman because she does all the inking and color work in addition to the penciling.

@spinningbirdcake: maybe I should go back and reread because when I first read it I really didn't dig it. Maybe it was because of the lack of J.H. Williams and a bias toward him

come on, that Superman Unchained cover is amazing, silver age is the best

The variant looks nice.

@timelordscience: Yeah it's a hard transition from JH Williams to anybody. Like I said though Rocket Girl looks a bit different due to her doing everything.

Have you read Madame Xanadu? Reeder did most of the art in that.

Superior foes looks good.

Posted by spinningbirdcake

@billy_batson: Yeah I haven't read all of it, just the first couple volumes but I really love her art on that series too. In retrospect it sucks that she left Batwoman but if Rocket Girl is the result then I absolutely approve.

Agreed. This is on my "to read" list - bumping it nearer to the top of the pile due to this.

That superman one is brutal!
